I’ve been wearing Astro a40’s for a many years. I enjoy the comfort and open back concept. I never got the Mixamp due to it’s price. I heard about the TR coming out so I waited and it was a let down. Not sure if it has to do Windows 10 or maybe I just was the one of many who got a faulty device(Issue occurred on windows 8). It crashes and the only fix is pulling the power on it and re plugging it in. After a couple of times that wouldn’t even help. A full PC restart if your only options. This also turns into a couple other problems. Mic stops working when running a game, somehow the Mixamp crashes and takes down all video feeds running on your pc simultaneously. Including Youtube videos.
This is fine to me. What bothers me is Astro’s service. Replying to me every 5 days with nothing to say about the problem. Acting as if I could be the 1%. Well here is proof that 1% is an understatement:
    http://forums.astrogaming.com/index.php?threads/astro-mixamp-pro-tr-xbone-edition-not-working-with-pc.201033/page-2

I can see the advantages of this device. And trust me I tried an entire week of every troubleshooting I could find in the forums. (Most cases point towards an issue with how PC’s distribute power between usb port..)

I’ve always defended Astro when being compared to Apple. Being just a Cash grab or an all looks no performance type of company. I can tell you my Iphone 6s talks the talk. This Mixamp not so much. My expectations were obviously high.. But if you knew what it’s like to get a Mixamp up in Canada for a good price you’d understand. All this trouble for ***SIMULATED*** Dolby Digital 5.1. Don’t even bring up the 7.1 talk.

Save your money and get the older Pro models seems to be the recommendations I get.

Asto is lucky my Headset is Pink and looks great. I’ll just get an actual Sound Card for near half the price.

I purchased this item to work with my HyperX Cloud II headset so that I can used on both the PC and PS4 at the same time since I do a lot of live streaming on Twitch. I’ve had Astros in the passed, even a pair of TR’s. When I sold my original gaming setup to build a new PC and new setup, my headset was the lowest piece of my budget. I ended up by the Cloud’s after talking to a lot of people at my work, and I had an accomadtion for them so they were 50% off. The headset itself has been amazing, but I had to search every corner of the web and ghetto rig the hell out of my setup to be able to hear game sound from the PS4, while also being able to use Discord and play spotify off of my PC. I’ve been having to run about 5 programs anytime I want to live stream, which eats up my CPU usage and eventually makes me drop a few frames per hour or so. I’m so excited that I got a new Astro mixamp as it will replace the need for those programs, and overall give me MUCH higher sound quality. The package came and was delivered to my back door (without asking) which is awesome, because I don’t like packages being left on my front porch. The mixamp came in the original packaging, and even still had the protective film still on the product. I haven’t been able to determine what exactly has been “used” about this product, as I sell these daily at my work and every little detail looks and works brand new. I took a chance and ordered my first “used” item as the price was around $50 off the original new price. I couldn’t be any happier with the product that I received. If you’re skeptical about buying this because it’s used, 100% go for it.

TLDR; The MixAmp Pro TR is a solid amp with intuitive controls and solid build construction let down by poorly implemented virtual surround sound. In a market with many viable alternatives, it’s hard to recommend.

I picked up the MixAmp Pro TR for my PS4 after searching for a solution that would allow me to easily switch audio between my PC and PS4 while also letting me use separate headphones/microphones. I did a lot of research and read a lot of different reviews on the MixAmp, so I felt confident when it came time to pull the trigger and place the order.

Out of the box, the hardware has overall solid construction, and the volume/balance knobs have a good heft to them. As other reviews have stated, the device is a bit on the light side, so it moved a lot on my desk when headphones were connected. This could probably be mitigated with some stick-on rubber feet on the bottom, so it didn’t bother me much. Setup of the amp was very straightforward as well; straight plug-and-play on PS4. Unfortunately getting the combo headphone/mic jack working with my setup quickly became a major frustration.

I picked up a ModMic 4 and 5 to try with my Sennheiser HD 558 headphones, but no matter what configuration of y-splitters, cabling, and or settings I tried I couldn’t get the ModMic to transmit reliably through the MixAmp. For device touted as an all-in-one solution for mixing your game and chat audio, this was a huge disappointment. In the end, I ended up wiring the ModMic directly to my PS4 controller instead and using the MixAmp solely for game audio. This leads me to my second and biggest complaint about the MixAmp: the audio quality.

The Virtual Surround Sound is rough to say the least… There’s an abrasive metallic reverb and general “echo” to the VSS that makes it very unpleasant to listen to. Booting up Black Ops 4 on the PS4, I enjoyed the improved soundstage and directional audio, but couldn’t get over echo. A quick Google search suggested that I wasn’t the only one experiencing this issue, but no matter what EQ settings I tried, I couldn’t fully eliminate the issue. It was disheartening to read about other users having to invest a great deal of time in tweaking their EQ just to get decent sound out of their $130 amps. For the asking price, you shouldn’t have to “tweak” your device to generate acceptable sound quality…

Finally, Astro’s support leaves a lot to be desired as well. After sending a support ticket detailing my issues with the VSS and mic setup, 24 hours later I got a reply of: “Please provide us with a photo of your ASTRO equipment so we can review this further.” Considering there’s no option for phone or real-time chat support, this was frustrating to say the least. At least offer some preliminary troubleshooting steps if we’re only going to be able to correspond once a day…

Overall the MixAmp did a great job mixing the audio from my PC and my PS4, and having a dedicated volume knob on my desktop was a welcome feature. However, for $130 I had hoped two of the main selling points of the MixAmp (the headphone/mic splitter and the VSS) would have provided a better experience.

In the end, I ended up returning the MixAmp Pro TR and picking up a Sound BlasterX G6 DAC instead. The audio quality on the G6 is MILES above the MixAmp. I’d highly recommend checking it out for anyone else frustrated by the MixAmp and looking for an alternative product. Out of the box (with no tweaking or configuration), the G6 brilliantly transforms stereo audio into vibrant surround sound.

A good piece of equipment. So much potential. All flushed down the toilet only because some units have a terribly shorted CTIA port. If you use an aftermarket Y splitter for headsets, it will echo like mad in PSN party chats once the audio is cranked above 58%.
It basically is shorted in such a way, with a 4 pole TRRS Y splitter, even if you don’t have a mic connected, all your game audio will leak out to the mic channel. Only if the audio level is set to 58% and above mind you.
Only solution, get the Astro inline audio cable or the Astro mobile inline cable. Which are priced on Amazon above 6k. Weird pricing if you ask me. Stores sell these cables for 1.5k tops.
This MixAmp has so much potential. But washed down components on some units makes it a deadly choice. You can’t even check on Amazon if these units are the 2013/2014 models. You can tell from the images, but no telling which will actually be shipped.
Everyone knows how good the Astro MixAmp is already(when it works). Max respect. But still a gamble when buying one oine overseas when you can’t even claim warranty or returns.

The Astro MixAmp Pro TR (PS4 edition) works great. This item was out of stock for the longest time so I initially ordered the Turtle Beach TAC. After a couple weeks of use, I returned the TAC and ordered the Astro MixAmp Pro TR and have zero regrets.

The Astro MixAmp Pro TR is able to easily power my AKG 712Pro Headphones with V-Moda BoomPro mic. This is hardly surprising as the AKG 712 Pro Headphones are easily driven at 62 ohms. The Turtle Beach TAC volume could be maxed out and these same headphones were not too loud – or even loud enough. I have the volume setting on the Astro MixAmp Pro TR at about 11 o’clock on the volume dial and that is plenty loud – I would not attempt to max this volume out as it would be deafening and potentially damage my hearing.

With the Turtle Beach TAC, I was continually told by people that my voice was cutting out – did not matter if I slid the sound gate slider to the bottom (off). I set the Astro MixAmp Pro TR voice gate to Streaming and have had no issues with my voice cutting out. (more on this later).

The Astro MixAmp Pro TR only has four sound presets available at anyone time plus a Dolby toggle switch (for positional sounds). These four presets can be easily changed by connecting the Astro MixAmp Pro TR to the pc using the Astro Command Center software. Upon first connection, the MixAmp firmware was immediately updated and all the settings are here. Sound fields can be changed, new presets can be loaded, the Voice Gating selected – Streaming (none); Night (limited); Home (a little more); and Tournament (lots of voice gating, need to speak very very loudly). There is also a streaming section which I ignored as I do not stream, and the final tab affects start up – Console mode (PS4); or PC.

The Astro MixAmp also has a vibrant audio community that is actively creating new sound presets. These are easily downloaded and you can try them out. I am using the Zalias Collection and having lots of fun working my way through the different pre-sets. I could not find anything like this for the Turtle Beach TAC – there wasn’t even a firmware update.

I could only find one real negative comparing the Astro MixAmp Pro TR to the Turtle Beach TAC. The Astro MixAmp Pro TR does not have a mute switch/button. This is not a problem for me as my V-Moda BoomPro mic has a built in Mute toggle. The other possible negatives are that to fully appreciate how great the Astro MixAmp Pro TR is, it needs to be connected and adjusted with the Astro Command Centre software. This takes less than 5-minutes but some people may not feel comfortable doing this. Finally, this model of the Astro MixAmp is solely for the PS4 and PC. You may need to buy a second MixAmp if you also own a Xbox One (not 100% sure about this but there is a separate Xbox version). The Turtle Beach TAC will work with PC, Mac, Ps4, and Xbox.

I should also mention I initially bought the Turtle Beach TAC for a discount on Amazon.ca for $210 (not sure what the regular price is). The Astro MixAmp Pro TR is $170. That is $50 cheaper and it bought on sale, the difference could be even larger.
