The Circus (2018), part of the American Experience series by PBS, is a 4-hour miniseries (on 2 DVDs) that gives an in-depth look at the rich history of the American circus, from the late eighteenth century up to more modern times. The good, the bad, the ugly, the tragic, and everything in between is covered. This program tells it like it is. Nothing is censored or sugarcoated. Barnum? Check. Bailey? Check. Everyone else? Just about. It goes beyond just historical facts and photos and footage, however. This series also delves into the positive effects that the travelling circus had on the American psyche and how it provided opportunities and an escape for anyone who wanted to dare to reinvent themselves. Excellent input is given through interviews with historians throughout the 4 hours. The experience of the American circus is summed up extremely well.
If you want to take a trip back in time to when there were spectacular travelling circuses (with ANIMALS, yes, ANIMALS) that, when arriving in town, the whole town would shut down, then this miniseries is for you! You won’t see animal rights protesters standing outside the big top. No political correctness, no wimpy “woke” culture that we now live in, just straight-up old time circus history back when people were generally tougher and not soft and weak and easily offended by everything imaginable like people and society are today. It’s so refreshing watching documentaries such as this – as well as old circus-themed movies – because they allow me to escape (at least for a while) back to a time period way before all the political correctness, etc. started going off the rails. When I go to the circus (the few that remain, unfortunately), I want to be entertained. Plain and simple. The tiger act. The lion tamer act. The elephant act. The equestrian act. On and on. Where are these acts? What happened? Oh, wait…
I highly recommend this miniseries. Some of you younger people will have the privilege of seeing (for the first time) circus acts that once were staples of every single circus once upon a time. You know, basic stuff like elephants, tigers, lions, horses, etc.
