I decided to get familiar with Linux a few months ago, no problem downloading and installing Ubuntu, but despite all the online help that’s available I got frustrated trying to resolve numerous ‘irritations’, and realised a logical procedure was required. So many books out there but am VERY, VERY glad I bought this one.
By chapter 4 I began to feel like an expert as most of my ‘problems’ and questions had been answered and I could then start enjoying Linux, as this book gives you a logical path to follow from installation onwards.
Installing from the supplied cd was much simpler than using the downloaded version, so if you want to become a proficient LInux user, buy this book, can’t be too highly recommended by me.

A very down-to-earth, non-tech friendly text for starting out with Ubuntu. I purchased the Official Ubuntu Handbook a while ago, but found this much easier to follow and more practical; it truly lives up to the ‘project-based’ title. I highly recommend this to anyone who’s thinking about making the leap to Ubuntu as a home operating system or even just test it out, it takes the fear factor out of the equation. A copy of Ubuntu 12.04 is included with the text so you can get started right away, a win-win purchase all around. (Yes, I know Ubuntu is free to download online, but it’s nice to have that barrier removed 🙂

This is a great basic intro to Ubuntu and the included apps and features. I found the intro to using the command line very helpful. Average users performing standard functions such as email, web browsing, letters, spreadsheet, etc., will find this book is all they will need in combo with the Web.

Clear and concise. The illustration are good and very helpful to one who is just learning a new operating system. The book takes a project or task by task format to help you learn Ubuntu. As an aside, Ubuntu is a great operating system so have fun with it and this book is a great resource.

I’m 64 years old, a non-geek, and non-techie. This book is giving me a clear and understandable waltz through a truly fun OS. I haven’t enjoyed my computer this much in years. The index isn’t all that comprehensive and I still have more questions than answers, but this tome has kicked me off in the right direction. The only weak point I’ve found in the book is how to go back and make changes after I’ve thought things over for a while. My main pleasure from this book is the self-confidence it gives me to wade ever deeper into Linux. This is a gotta-have book for anyone who is interested in Ubuntu-Linux.

I bought this book as a present for my 70+ year-old father. Like many people, he is looking to move on from Windows XP in anticipation of Microsoft stopping security patches early in 2014. With the help of this excellent book he has now set-up a Linux computer that can use all his digital photography equipment – a variety of scanners, printers, colour calibrators and digital cameras (almost none of which would be supported by current Windows versions). The book is very well written – the structure, choice of topics and assumed knowledge are appropriate to a typical computer user, not an “enthusiast”. Where appropriate, more advanced topics are mentioned and sources of additional specialist information are suggested. The book also assumes that a particular type of Linux – Ubuntu 12.04 – is being used (the installation CD is provided). This choice is completely appropriate for the target audience (and is also widely used by advanced users). Choosing a specific version of Linux allows the book to be written in a much clearer and more concise manner than those which attempt to cover Linux in general. Of course there is nothing to stop the reader going on to try other types of Linux if they want to experiment – the experience gained from this book would still be invaluable. In short, “Ubuntu Made Easy” is a very good place to start a “Linux Experiment” – Strongly Recommended.

I’ve been threatening to ditch Windoze for years (I swore that I would never upgrade again when I was using Win 98, but I did upgrade to WinXP) and jump to Linux. I ordered a new PC with Ubuntu pre-installed and ordered this book while I was waiting for the PC. When the PC arrived, this book has certainly reduced my learning curve in getting to know the new operating system. Linux systems get upgraded more frequently than Windoze, so I was expecting some differences between this book and the version of Ubuntu on my PC, but the book came so close to what I have on my PC that it has been a considerable help.
I would highly recommend this book to any new convert (like me).

I have been using Ubuntu for a little over a year and consider myself an intermediate user. I purchased the book to aid a friend who was curious about the Linux. Before giving the book to my friend I decided to peruse through it and found many new bits of information that I did not know. The book is well written and gets the beginner up and running quickly in Linux. Within a few days of reading and following the book beginners can begin feeling comfortable and productive with Ubuntu Linux.

I have been fascinated by Linux and the Ubuntu distros for the last few years. I finally bought a five-year-old HP laptop on eBay last year and decided to give it a go. I wiped the drive, installed 12.04 LTS, and off I went. It has changed my life and kept me fascinated.
Aside from web surfing, software, etc., I wanted to learn more about the OS and its inner workings. This book was a perfect introduction all around, even giving me enough command line info to be dangerous (and useful!). I really enjoy the way this book is written, and it is endlessly fascinating. Even though I’ve moved on to the next book, The Linux Command Line: A Complete Introduction, I intend to re-read this book because it is so well-written and informative.
Many thanks to the author for writing a book that not only helped me greatly but also made me happy to read it.

Most Linux books I have seen are written for the IT programmer type of person; this book is not.It has the right mix of technical data with out over whelming the reader. I have not finished the book but a good 2/3 the way though. Still debating to try Linux on one of my computers or not.

My first Ubuntu installation, my first Ubuntu book … it took me by the hand and showed me just about everything I wanted to know, and also things I didn’t know I wanted to know. Also good as a reference. This book is extremely readable, it has been on the market in many older versions and this 12.04 LTS version is just right!
Buy it if you want to get further than the Internet and emailing with your Ubuntu, or are just wondering whether you should switch from MS to Linux. You won’t regret it, This book is fun!
