I really wanted to like this book, but have to say that there is just no way there is £30 worth of content or value provided.
First off there is way too much time given to basics, by the time the author gets around to describing ‘actions’ we are well into the book. To be fair the descriptions and diagrams/images used are actually very good, but do not go into anywhere near enough detail to be useful.
A lot of time is given to:-
– The anatomy of jobs and actions.
– Self hosting your runner.
– Intro to building your own actions.
Regrettably this comes at the cost of a lack of depth and detail about oh so many other features provided by Github Actions. The section on creating your own actions seems strange to me given how little depth the author goes into about how to actually use actions. There is barely enough information given about actions to permit a reader to ascetain whether their own runner is even needed.
This is not a big book. I’m struggling to seen how the publisher came up with the £30 price tag. If it had covered more of the topics then I would have been considerably more satisfied. Maybe a future edition which goes into more detail would offer better value, but that does not help in the here and now where i feel just a little ripped off.
Having said all this, if you are a complete newbie and then this would probably be ok for you as it is a more gentle and clearly written intro than that provided by the official docs. If you are not a newbie and have used other CI/CD systems (Gitlab/Azure DevOps etc), then beware! There is not £30 worth of value here.

This book provides a great overview of GitHub Actions!
Mr. Ashley Allen –
I am coming to the CI/CD topic from a security perspective, and wanted to get more of an idea around GitHub Actions (GHA), how they are used, and potential security issues. This book is a good introduction to what GHAs are, but it felt in many places that more in-depth treatments were required. There are lots of pointers to the official documentation; this is fine for topics that may lie outside of what the book is attempting to teach, but too many times it felt that the author was using that as a way to avoid writing extra words. Having read the book I know what GHAs are, but I will need a lot of additional reading to actually do anything useful with them. As another reviewer suggested, there is not a lot of book here for £30, and it is difficult to recommend. As a very basic overview it is OK, but there are likely online resources that will give you the same level of detail for free. I was expecting a much meatier book for the price, and am disappointed with the contents. Packt are generally a decent publisher, so hopefully a much expanded new edition is in the pipeline. Until then, I would avoid.

Forget searching the net for guides and watching low resolution youtube videos. This book is comprehensive and easy to understand. I would recommend to anyone who is starting out or looking to advance their GitHub Actions skills!

Sanchit –
A very practically written book with step-by-step guides to understanding the concept of Github actions and apply to various frequently used real-world situations.
Michael Heitland –
Well written if you start from scratch and are looking for a short introduction.
But it is not goingvery deep.
And it is a bit pricy regarding the beginner level.
Miguel –
Super easy to read, follow and examples make it one of the best introductions/applications books I’ve ever read, period. Even for a guy that has never been anywhere near Github and that stuff, I definitely feel that I can now safely start to do so and feel comfortable doing it. Definitely a new weapon in my arsenal. 10/10
Brian Willebrand –
Great book, detailed & helpful!
Jonathan Pritchard –
I really liked how the book assumed none to little prior knowledge and would incrementally build the complexity. I would say it’s helpful to have a grasp of what you might want to achieve in creating a workflow, i.e. team automation or CI/CD and that will help with some of the examples.
The book links well with the documentation too.
A great start for newcomers!
