Most of the parts in the kit are US domestic sourced some are Chinese, had no issues with the kit…Some say thats a good reason to avoid this kit….I think its BS because so you end up saving some $$$, even though it has parts that are made in USA the parts are made to Gates quality…

This was mostly a great kit. The Belt and all of the pulleys are the exact same parts that I pulled off of my 2008 Subaru Impreza. The Water pump was from a different manufacturer, but it seemed well built.
My issue with the whole kit, and the reason I didnt give it 5 stars, was because of the shipping and boxing of the item. The pullies were all just loose in the box, so they could move around and bang into each other in shipment. All of the pullies had nicks and scrapes on their working surfaces because of this. Gates should put in some packing peanuts or a specially made foam insert. Its crazy that they would let that happen.

Everything came as described – brand new and ready to be used. I used a youtube video of a mechanic putting on the timing belt on my 2007 Subaru Impreza 2.5i to help me along with the DIY install. The only thing this kit did not have was the Crankshaft seal and the Camshaft seals. I picked those up along with some thread lock (red) and a water pump gasket (not included), made for an easy install ๐ Highly recommend this timing belt kit to any DIYer!

A quality kit with everything you need. It includes comprehensive instructions, torque specs, and a special tool developed by Gates to prevent belt damage on those applications with a belt guide at the crank sprocket. It also includes the complete tensioner assembly, including the hydraulic actuator, not just the pulley. We’re good for another 105,000 miles.

according to the mechanic, it was a very good kit, although I still had to buy a couple of other items [ not included, but necessary] in order for him to finish the job. Sorry, but not being my area of expertise, I forgot the name of the parts, but they were to hold something else in place.

I bought a complete Gates timing belt and water pump set from Amazon [Gates TCKWP304A Engine Timing Belt Kit with Water Pump], assuming that Gates made good parts and Amazon sold and serviced them. Because it took longer than expected to remove the old water pump, I didn’t inspect the new pump until I was ready to install it, about 40 days after I purchased it. When I took it out of the package to compare it to the old one, I discovered that it had one large and several small impact marks (aka dings or bumps) on it. Since this surface is the pulley that the timing belt goes around, these bumps are likely to prematurely wear or damage the timing belt, causing it to fail sooner than the 100K replacement recommendation. Because this is an “interference” engine, a prematurely failed timing belt will cause the valves to hit each other, instantly and permanently damaging the engine. I can see the 30 day return window for items that don’t fit or are no longer needed, but this is obviously a defect from the manufacturer. I am disappointed that Gates allowed something like this to happen, didn’t catch it, and Amazon won’t allow me to return it. In the future, I know better than to rely on Gates for good quality parts or Amazon to make it right. Just like Temu or Ali Baba — inspect your parts when they arrive, and don’t assume the low cost or convenience will be accompanied by good quality parts or service.

I am rebuilding the EJ253 from my 2007 Subaru Impreza 2.5i. I spun a rod bearing and bought this kit hoping the ungodly racket was a bad hydraulic time belt tensioner. Not the droids that I was looking for.
Keep the key (pin) for the tensioner!!! Since I have had to break down the engine and replace the crank and bearings… the key that comes with the tensioner is very useful for reusing the tensioner. Just clamped the tensioner down to the right amount of squish and put it back through the hole. Now when you’re done rebuilding the engine, you can reuse the tensioner easily.
Everything else is nice and factory. The water pump coming with a thermostat would be value added, but no biggie.
