I wanted this book because the publisher’s website indicates it was arranged by Maeve Gilchrist. Maeve is a famous Celtic (lever) harper who creates really interesting compositions and arrangements (and is a lovely person and fantastic teacher from whom I’ve been honoured and somewhat starstruck to learn from multiple times), and I was keen to see what she did with these songs. I was dismayed to see that the book does not print Maeve’s name anywhere in its pages; this seems just *wrong* despite Hal Leonard’s intellectual property, but at least they give her credit for her work on their website. This book is perhaps a little less intriguing than Maeve’s compositions and other more recent works (including her Christmas Suite for Clarsach), but overall the music is interesting nonetheless, and some of the pieces are hard to find arranged for harp (likely for licensing reasons). I’ve just played roughly through the book once so far to see what’s what, and I agree with some other comments that there are a lot of lever changes — but those lever changes contribute to the interesting crunches and familiar sounds in the well-known songs that pop up throughout the arrangements. At first glance, the written music appears simple to play, but with the lever changes I’d say this book is likely a solid intermediate level (not for beginners). At least one commenter suggested the arrangements aren’t possible to be played on lever harp, but that is absolutely *not true.* The last piece in the book *did* make me think at first that there was a serious erratum with the key signature (E flat major — 3 flats) and the comment at the top of the page about tuning the harp in D flat major (5 flats), but then I realized it means the harp must be *tuned* (as written! Oh me of little faith) in D flat major to enable the accidentals in the piece, *not* that the levers are to be set to D flat major. Anyway, I’m grateful to Amazon for getting this book to me the day after I ordered it (after another online bookstore failed to ship it after 6 weeks of waiting, so I finally cancelled the order from them). Although Christmas is now over, I’ll look forward to learning some of these tunes through the year and playing them next Christmas.

These are simple arrangements that are perfect for me for getting back into harp after several years off. I can play them a few times and then the piece sounds really nice. Good for the season too! I haven’t yet played the whole book but from what I’ve done I really like it.

I bought this book because it has many songs which you don’t typically see arranged for lever harp. There is a reason for this: many accidentals. There are some songs with no lever changes, but in general, those are the traditional carols. While the arrangements aren’t too difficult, the lever changes are extreme! For example, in I’ll Be Home for Christmas, there are 17 lever changes (plus 17 to put the levers back down) in just two pages of music. Really wanted to learn that one, but I’ll have to settle for I Wonder as I Wander, which just has just two in the right hand harmony notes.
In reviews that I read on another website, buyers state that these would be better suited to a pedal harp. I can’t speak to that since I’ve never played one. However, it’s a stretch to say that these are comfortable arrangements for the lever harp. The chords are included, so you can create your own left hand arrangements.
I gave this four stars, reluctantly. It will take a long time for me to learn these due to the lever changes. I would call myself an early intermediate player who sometimes dabbles in intermediate. The unique songs here are generally intermediate and the typical Christmas carols are generally late elementary in my view. Hope this helps!
