My daughter just began playing and the ancient case she got with her horn was frustrating her, and kept pinching her fingers on the snaps. This is WAY lighter and still seems very sturdy. My primary complaint is that it’s not for a regular single French horn, it’s for a double horn. So there’s extra space and it bangs around. We had to put some extra rags/padding in to make sure it didn’t get dented. Otherwise a nice case for the price.

I canโ€™t believe Iโ€™ve ever waited this long to buy a case like this. Half the weight of my regular case and just as protective. The fold out backpack straps are a great feature. I bought it for my Holton H179 and it has a pretty good fit. Itโ€™s just a little bit larger so the horn doesnโ€™t lock in like the hard case but the tiny bit of movement doesnโ€™t effect anything. My only complaint is only one mouthpiece slot instead of two. Meh. Not a big deal. The outside pouch is good for books and sheet music but not large enough for the big folders. Again- not a deal breaker. If you are still using a hard case you need to buy this.

Just unboxed. I am really excited…. it’s like I designed it myself. I am not finding that it comes anywhere near the back of my head like the reivewer who found he couldn’t bike with it wrote. I wonder if that can be fixed with a tiny bit more slack on the shoulder straps. I do intend to bike with it occasionally but only in a fairly upright posture.
My C.F. Schmidt which was just restored just barely fits– it did not fit in its original case after restoration because the leadpipe ended up extending further beyond the horn– initially I thought that was going to be a deal-breaker with this case but the end of the leadpipe does just hook into the leadpipe depression. I imagine that will conform better with wear-in.
So, probably redundant with other reviews– it’s light, it’s flexible, and the straps and closures seem secure enough (I tend to worry quite a bit about those sort of things.) The shoulder strap is a little awkward somehow; for several decades I have used a canvas gig bag originally sold under the Brasswind name with just a shoulder strap. but something about the placement of the attachments for this one makes it not sit quite right. I may have to experiment a bit more.
I will update if it turns out to have longevity issues.
Edit after about 6 weeks of use: No quality issues so far but I really wish there was some way to carry music. I’ve been sticking the straight mute in the bell (just barely closes) and soft-folding the music in half around my stop mute and other accessories to put in the pouch… not a great solution. Hate having to carry a separate bag.
Edit after 3 months…. have had a bit of a problem with the shoulder strap snagging on things while walking with it worn in the backpack position. One time I was going pretty fast when it happened– caught on a rod projecting from a dumpster in a part of town with no alleys…just barely avoided going down and thought I’d injured myself and thought it miraculous that the case was undamaged, but I did discover ultimately that the outer canvas got ripped at the base of one of the shoulder straps. Gonna have to take it to a local taylor sooner or later and see if he’s willing to try to sew on reinforcements somehow. Have been trying to get the shoulder strap out of the way but it’s not easy.

The Protec French Horn case is light weight, yet sturdy and protective.
The 3 varying carry handles are all great – normal handle, over the shoulder and rucksack style – all with adjustable straps.
There’s only space for the mouthpiece inside – a basic plastic holder. Mute will fit in the bell and space for buzz mute tucked in between horn slides. The padding inside is good quality and supports a Yamaha 667 very well.
There are two pockets on the outside – one for music (no bigger than A4), the other for oils and repair kit etc.
Not traveled with it yet – no rehearsals due to COVID lockdown……fingers crossed this will soon change.
    One happy customer!

great fit, durable, and i love being able to carry it as a backpack because i need to travel with it a lot, climbing sidewalks in the city or stairs up to rehearsal. my three oil bottles and little grease container fit great in the small zipper pocket and i can fit a bunch of folders, my ipad, and other accessories in the big zipper pocket. it’s quick and easy to switch carrying methods, as the shoulder strap clips on nicely. i keep that in the big zipper pocket, too. i also appreciate the lower price of the case, compared to similar brands.

really the only problem i have with this case is how it can’t really stand upright by itself, because of the weight of the side with the zipper pockets. it doesn’t really effect me, though, as i just lean it against walls or chairs, etc.

This case is so light. I bought it to replace the original case to my conn 8D now that my son is going to play my horn in middle school. Iโ€™m so jealous. This case weighs less with the horn inside it than my old case weighs empty. And with the shoulder and backpack straps, it makes carrying it infinitely more convenient than my experience more than 20 years ago. Absolutely worth it.

I got this case because I couldn’t deal with my hard case smashing against my knee anymore. Thankfully I no longer have that problem, and even if this case does hit my knee when I’m carrying it by the handle (I’m often carrying a backpack for school), it does not hurt. I also really like the backpack straps.

    Pros:
    -light
-sufficiently protective given its price/size (you shouldn’t throw it on the ground or anything, but it protects against everyday knocks and bumps)
-pocket to hold music (or food)
-smaller pocket on the front of the main pocket that you can put a tuner or some pencils in
    -backpack straps
-shoulder strap (though I’ve never used it)
-it’s easy to clip on a mute bag

    Cons:
-the inside padding is made of styrofoam, which cracks/breaks kind of easily (but this has never caused a problem for me)
-when you use the mouthpiece holder, the mouthpiece eventually gets a permanent rim around it (I’ve included a picture)

    Pictures:
    1. the case after about 6 months of use (you’ll also see my mute bag)
    2. the rim around my mouthpiece
