This is an incredibly useful, versatile OD pedal – I like it a lot and it’s probably my favorite dirt pedal right now. I play blues, soul, reggae, R&B and rock – a little bit of everything, even some mediocre country licks. I don’t do high gain stuff, really. I like a dirt pedal to be useful for both rhythm and lead, and hopefully it cleans up will with the guitar’s volume pot. I have some humbucker guitars, but really I only play single coils – strat, tele & jazzmaster.

The Mojomojo sounds great with all of my guitars. I run the gain anywhere from 9-noon and I’m very happy with the sounds I get for both lead and rhythm – with various pickups, also, meaning I can get it set up so that it’s not too dark to do chords on a neck pickup while not being overly bright or harsh when switching to the bridge. There’s a lot more gain on tap than I use.

One last thing – having two tone controls is SO helpful, and really makes this pedal much more versatile than a single-tone-knob OD. The voicing is more open than a Tubescreamer-style pedal. There isn’t a pronounced midrange hump, it’s not overly dark or bassy, and to my ear it sounds pretty neutral with the tone controls at noon. The tone controls boost or cut from noon, by the way. The voice switch will give you a little more bass in one setting, but I don’t find this necessary. It’s also subtle, but I can see where it would be useful if you wanted a bit more girth on a bridge pickup. More drive pedals need to have multi-band EQ – it makes such a huge difference in the versatility of the pedal, and I can’t imagine this sounding bad through any amp. I sometimes use it through a slightly dirty amp, sometimes a clean amp, and either way it’s great.

Also – this thing is an absolute STEAL at $50. This is destined to be the new Bad Monkey (a great, cheap OD pedal that’s now not so cheap), but much better than the Bad Monkey – just better tone overall and more versatile, in my opinion.

I mostly play jazz and funk music, so I don’t usually require any kind of overdrive/distortion. I have a boss MD-2 when I want fuzz or distortion, but I really wanted something to give me just a little edge with my amp. I’ve been really playing around with the setting on the MojoMojo and it was exactly what I was looking for. With the drive knob low and low volume on my guitar, there was barely any fuzz or coloration at all, I played through some extended jazz harmonies looking for weird wave beating (that oscillation that happens when there is distortion or two notes are played together) and there was not much there at all. I felt like I could actually use this all the time while playing jazz if the drive and guitar volume are on low settings. When I roll on volume and add a little drive, this baby can growl too!. With the bass and treble knobs, and voice switch, many tones can be achieved from a heavy buzzy muddy waters tone to more of a clean trebly scream, to a really dirty almost crunch. Its very versatile, especially when playing with the guitar’s volume level as well.

As far as build quality goes, I haven’t had it for very long, but the chassis is a gorgeous metallic brown (reminds me of an ’89 caprice classic I had), and all the pieces feel well machined. the knobs are all solid feeling, with some resistance on the pots, so they don’t feel spongy or loose or anything. Its also a relatively small pedal, much shallower than my boss or my wampler sitting on either side of it, but not so short patch cables are binding or anything. The red LED is also very nice if perhaps a little blinding.

For reference, I was playing a LP style guitar, with PAF style humbuckers, running through a Wampler Ego comp., into a ’65 deluxe reissue with Jensen blue speaker.
*I went to my amp immediately after writing this review and plugged my Ibanez rg into the signal chain. Using the same amp and signal chain, I focused entirely on pickup settings 2,3,and 4, which on my instrument are all the single coil settings. I should also say that the pickups in this instrument are generally very hot, its a high output, ceramic magnet, passive pickup setup. The mojomojo handled it very well though without too much grit. Quite a bit of drive was needed to really distort the middle single coil, and it sounded good on all of the other settings as well.

This pedal is definitely earning a permanent spot on my board, and at right around 50 bucks… this is a hell of a steal.
Bottom line, it sounds good to my ears and it may sound good to yours as well. In a day and age when simple overdrive pedals can cost crazy amounts all on their own, a quality built pedal that is versatile at 50 dollars new isn’t seen often at all. Even if you bought it and hated it, at this price point, its definitely worth a try.

This a classic overdrive pedal. This is actually a true overdrive, many competitors call their products overdrive but is actually more of distortion pedals. I guess there is a fine line or whatever. Don’t expect a green kind of overdrive, this one is more neutral and maybe more transparent in som configurations.
