These have become my go to IEMs for listening to music over my Blessing 2s, Sennheiser IE600s, and my Thieaudio Monarch Mk2.

For me the imaging and soundstage along with a very engaging tonality make these an easy recommendation.

The hardest part will be if they fit your ears well or not. I find them more comfortable than the Monarch Mk2 but the IE600 are by far more comfortable. That being said I use extra small Azla Xelastec tips and it helps the comfort a lot for me (even more so that the Spinfit W1 tips).

Upped the score to reflect Sony’s warranty department finally did right, and replaced the initial IER-z1R. Sound is great, watch out when switching cables even when they’re the ones Sony provide.

The sound is amazing—the best bass I’ve ever heard. The customer service is atrocious. I was changing cables from conventional to balanced—both provided in the package—and found that the conventional cable’s MMCX shroud/sleeve became stuck in the iem, with no way to remove. This is clearly a manufacturing defect of the Sony cable that’s been more widely reported for this IEM than any other, but Sony refuses to cover it under warranty even though it is a Sony product damaging a Sony product—a true gotcha/catch 22 on the warranty meaning nothing. Will never buy a Sony product again.

    Where do I start?
The Sony ier-z1r’s are fantastic in ear monitors.
I’d been promising myself these for ages but the price had put me off. This Sony product is not available in all countries and so can be very difficult to get hold of. I have no idea why that should be.
In practical terms these are quite heavy and so can cause some users fit issues.
I have no problem in this area as I have fitted large size Shure memory foam tips which need to be squashed up and allowed to expand while gently being held in the ear. It means that fitting them can’t be rushed but the result is good sound isolation and extended bass notes. I’ve also used an aftermarket balanced cable which is quite chunky but it has an interchangeable tip with 3 options of 2.5, 3.5 and 4.4 connectors. It means less faffing about if you want to use these with an unbalanced source. I also fitted silicon covers to prevent any scratching of the metal case. My main music source for out and about is a shangling m0 pro with a balanced output and its size is absolutely tiny. The result is a very, very small lightweight music source making this setup so incredibly portable you can literally wear it anywhere and nobody’s any the wiser. It certainly doesn’t look like a couple of grands worth if kit but nobody else can guess the party that’s happening inside your head. I listened to these whilst doing the weekly shop at Tesco last week and the experience was slightly surreal. Expect to hear nuances and stereo imagery you never knew existed. I hear something new every time I pop these on. If you’re reading this don’t hesitate- life’s too short and if you get fed up the resale for these is really good. If I decide I don’t like them (which isn’t likely) I can sell them and with the money I might be able to buy back the kidney I had to sell to get them in the first place! (Only joking) Worth every penny-but ridiculously expensive!

I’ve owned most recently the sony iem-m9 and shure 846 to give you an idea of what I am comparing the sony iem-z1r against. The Z1R is truly an engineering marvel in the sense that it is able to offer (in my opinion) the hardest hitting bass in an IEM. If you are into techno/house/rap you will find these things to give you the bass impact you are seeking. Additionally, the Z1R are built well (actual ear pieces are made in Japan, cables and accessories are VERY UNFORTUNATELY MADE IN CHINA).

So, what are the tradeoffs with the IEM-Z1R?

    – Price: these are somewhat overpriced yet, at the same time, I feel they are competitive in the context of other similar IEMs.

    – Accessories included are decent but not what I want for nearly 2 grand. As mentioned, the accessories are rather cheaply made overall (made in china unfortunately), especially the cables. The cables are pretty and quite good, but again, for the price of the who package, I expect something much better. Also, replacement cables are over $130 each which is excessive given the quality and chinese origin.

    – WAY too flashy design. The zirconium alloy is pretty but it attracts attention in public and contributes to what are heavy IEMs.

    – To get the most bang for your buck, you need to be using these with one of sony’s latest walkmans (which are overpriced as well) and lossless audio tracks. Personally, I do NOT like managing a library of music files and was not interested in spending 3 grand on a new walkman.

Top 3 in-ear earphone in the world, but it hurts after 2 hours of use. Considering this, I prefer IE900. Also, Amazon return took 20 days this time…
