I say that because I feel that this book seems to be missing huge chunks of 20th Century Fox history. I really would have liked to read more about how things were run in the 80’s and 90’s. And I would like to know how the current administration feels about their current overlord Disney. Nevertheless, the book was informative and a good quick moving read.

A decently researched bio mostly and a very good read while focusing on the life and career of Darryl F. Zanuck whose history on the studio lot is still recalled and retold by long time veterans there. Some omissions (how much of the Fox lot was purchased from its largest star at the time, Tom Mix), some errors (not in โWestwoodโ which is further south and west but West L.A.; โFord v. Ferrariโ not about Formula One but prototype endurance racing). Coverage of the final years of the studio feel rushed, and under researched, but itโs worth it for a very good biography of the Zanucks.

Was wanting information on Movies, & Movie Stars. Disappointed, this was about Movie Studios & their History, which was of little interest to me.

Eyman is one of the best film historians of all time. I have enjoyed every one of his books, and this one is no exception. Perceptive, informative, every page a delight to read. Highly recommended to all fellow fans of Hollywood’s studio era!
Lionel Friedberg –
Written with taut precision, insight and humor this is a great book. And what a fascinating history of one of Hollywood’s most iconic personalities and studios. Fabulous read!

Itโs always a bad sign when you catch a factual error right off of the bat. Minor error, but it exposes the author for being a wiki-research-er (I checked and the same wrong info is on a wiki site, but if he had continued reading past the first paragraph the error is eventually corrected/clarified – pretty lazy). Boo.

I loved it!!!!!!!!!! Good writing kept me interested, especially with mention of Tyrone Power my favorite actor of the Golden Era of Hollywood

This is a fascinating look at the lives and careers of William Fox and Darryl Zanuck, two giants of the film industry, the likes of whom we will not see again. Scott Eyman draws on his bottomless knowledge of film history and his access to film producers, directors and stars to bring these protean figures to life. The book also features wonderful photographs, many in color, that reminds the reader of many of the great films created by Fox and Zanuck.
J. K. Campbell –
Scott Eyman is a film historian who chronicles Hollywood’s Golden Age. His book, “Hank and Jim”, is one of my favorites which I have reviewed previously. The present book is equally compelling to me since I live only 30 miles from the small Nebraska town, Wahoo, which was the boyhood home of both Darryl Zanuck and Hall of Fame baseball player Wahoo Sam Crawford, the all-time major league leader in triples.
Zanuck’s personal story interested me much more than the tale of 20th Century-Fox and Eyman supplies the juicy details which make Harvey Weinstein seem like a choirboy. The 16 pages of glossy photos from the library of Turner Classic Movies enhance the prose. As Zanuck’s son Richard says in the book, ” For a little guy coming out of Wahoo, Nebraska, he did all right in a very tough town”.
Amazon Customer –
I started buying Scott Eyman’s books on Hollywood history with his John Wayne biography a few years ago. This book on 20th Century Fox was the fifth of his books that I’ve read. It has a good pace and a lot of detail about both Zanuck’s work at Fox and William Fox’s creation of the studio beforehand. Eyman shows that Zanuck like most of the other moguls was anything but a perfect person. The only negative is that Eyman doesn’t put enough info in it about Fox’s position in old Hollywood, but it’s still well worth the buy and the read
Mark A. Mayerson –
Scott Eyman is one of my favorite writers about Hollywood film history. This history of 20th Century Fox does a good job of summarizing the various eras of the studio, starting with a good summary of the career of founder William Fox. The bulk of the book concentrates on Darryl Zanuck, one of the more interesting and hands-on studio heads. There is a shorter section following up the various executives and owners the studio had, right up to the purchase by Disney.
Eyman’s writing is always a pleasure to read and his knowledge is formidable. If you’ve read other Eyman histories, you won’t be disappointed with this one. If you have not, but are interested in Hollywood history, Eyman won’t disappoint you.
