A Perfect Amish Romance by Shelley Shepard Gray is book 1 in The Berlin Bookmobile Series
This is the story of Aaron Coblentz and Kayla Kauffman although you will also meet Sarah Anna Miller who is a wonderful character that runs a bookmobile. Then you will also meet Tiny (Aaron’s sister) and
Joel Lapp who is Aaron’s and Tiny’s neighbor and good friend.
When Aaron takes a leap of faith to go for his dream and study for his GED in order it get a promotion at work he quickly learns he needs help so he asks the local bookmobile lady Sarah Anna to help and she suggests Kayla who has also taken the GED. Aaron is happy but at the same time worried that his secret will get back to his parents, he will do anything to keep it from them and not hurt them.
Kayla is so excited to be able to help yet she is worried that her secret will show on her behavior, as she is tired, and at times just does not seem as if she can continue to keep up.
The thing about this book and I’m hoping the series is that you will see that books can teach you many wonderful things and if we are fortunate enough to reach out and connect with our librarian they can lead us to many opportunities, not only to open a door to new books but to listen and share and who know maybe even become a friend. This is a wonderful book and the characters are great I really like Aaron and Kayla they both dared to step out to do what they believe what they feel is right for them. I look forward to the rest of the series, and I know anyone who is a true book lover will really enjoy this book. I highly recommend it.

Wow! What a great start to a new series! There isn’t ONE thing I didn’t enjoy about this book….except that I came to the end of it!!!
I love the concept of the bookmobile, and I think I might want to be Sarah Anne Miller when I grow up!
And I must say, I’m always a bit skeptical when the word “romance” appears in a title, because it always seems to be the same old boy-meets-girl story and happens way too fast in my opinion. This book is PERFECT!!!! I loved the pace of all of the elements.
Now I just have to wait for the next Berlin Bookmobile story. I hope it’s not going to be TOO long!

Characters were a range of ages each with their own problems to solve. Shelley incorporates current social problems in a delightful book that has one turning pages and finding the last page way too soon.

A book that had you happy then sad. The librarian was really my favorite character. She really cared about people and helping them. The two couples in love didn’t seem like they were going to make it but they did!

This was a great read. There were so many things that I underlined; so many nuggets of goodness that I wanted to remember. I’ve been having luck with my Amish romances lately and it’s been very spiritually uplifting. One of the best things about this book is how loving the families were. There were challenges and love developing and one of the best things is that there wasn’t an overbearing parent or ordnung in sight. Thinking about it, we really didn’t see any English in this story and yet the oppressive feeling of some Amish stories wasn’t here. These people weren’t stifled by their simple life. They enjoyed it, which made me enjoy it too. And their faith was not just lived out in going to 3-hour church services but in the way they cared for each other, their community, and used the Bible to guide their lives. I really liked Aaron’s chaotic family and especially his parents. While Daed was the family head, and Mamm was his partner and wife, they didn’t try to control their children’s lives, but instead tried to guide them to be their best selves. It’s healthy family dynamics at its best. Even when Aaron revealed his secret — studying for the GED — they were supportive but still gave him a scold for being dishonest about what he was doing and hiding it. I noticed, too, that they weren’t scared of interacting with Englishers, a feeling I’ve gotten from some other stories, like their faith was so precarious that being around the English would corrupt them, bring them harm and wreak their faith. Instead, these people weren’t scared of the English way of life. They liked their faith better and found it more spiritually fulfilling. That may not seem like a big deal but to me meant a lot. These people followed their community’s rules not out of fear but out of the joy it brought them. Not to say that they didn’t have challenges or hardships. But their faith and the love they shared helped them through those times instead of making them more of a burden. Definitely recommend.
