Meigui –
I had never seen a story of WWII oriented totally to the civilian view, and I loved it. Recognizing the privations, rationing, struggles to carry on with a normal life was facinating. I heartily recommend this book!
Ann Henry –
Fourteen-year-old Lily Collins of Midlands, England, shows grit, gumption, and compassion in this uplifting story of family and friends during the blitz in 1941 England. Lily takes a job at Marlowe’s department store to help out her mum and finds a second family there. Thanks to Lily’s ingenuity and heartfelt efforts, the two families merge into one, producing much joy and hope despite the ongoing war.
Kris Anderson, The Avid Reader –
A Store at War is a charming historical novel. Lily Collins is fortunate to secure a position as a junior at Marlowโs, but it is a different type of environment for her. She needs to think before she acts (that is going to be a challenge). Lily also tends to speak her mind and is headstrong. She makes friends with Gladys and Jim. Jim stumbles upon a scheme and confides in Lily. They want to find a way to stop the enterprise before it ruins Marlowโs. I liked the various characters in the story, and we see that people put on appearances. We do not know what is going on in their lives until we take the time to get to know an individual. I thought A Store at War was nicely written and it proceeded at a gentle pace. It was interesting to learn what happened when an air raid siren went off while one is shopping in a department store. There were also a number of rules for shop assistants to follow (including appearance and proper etiquette). They had to know their merchandise and where it was located. We get a glimpse of what life was like during World War II in England (rationing, air raids, blackouts, bombings). During and after the war, they had to make do and mend (new and used clothing were hard to come by). We see at the end of the book that there is more to come. I wonder what will happen in Wartime for the Shop Girls.
*I voluntarily read an advanced copy of this novel. The comments and opinions expressed are strictly my own.

Joanna Toye has given is a wonderful six book series, starting with this first book. Itโs carefully researched and the author brings in lots of interesting aspects providing insight on what it would have been like living and working in Englandโs Midlands through WW2. And the characters are marvelously developedโฆno stereotypes, but real, interesting people. The story arcs are great. I was sad to finish the last bookโฆextremely binge worthy. Hereโs hoping Netflix picks this up and another series is on its way.
Mr. Kenneth D. Jones –
The opening book in a proposed series introduces us to Lily Collins, her family and her leaving school at fourteen to seek employment. Unable to stay on in school, Lily her Mum and two brothers really do need her to be out earning, and the ups and downs of Lilies life have you really involved in the time and place.
A thoroughly enjoyable light read set in 1940, and featuring Hintons most luxurious department store, โMarlowsโ
Well written with an engaging story line, this book does exactly what it promises, uncomplicated entertainment.
If you like family/wartime sagas, you will love this.
Pandora –
Pity it stopped where it did but I did enjoy reading about a poor girl getting a job in a posh store, so I immediately bought the second book in the series which Iโm reading now
Amazon Customer –
The characters were all wonderful, so the author gave a very good look at the way a department store was run in small town England during World War II. Add to that the personal lives of these diverse people and you have a great book. I highly recommend it!
Jean B –
I love this series!
Sarah White –
This book revolves around the life of a young woman who works in a department store in Midlands, England during World War II. It tells of her being hired and the training she was given. It also tells of the rationing that was enforced by a nation at war and the hardships on the people because of this rationing.
I learned a lot about the effects of war on people and the book made me glad that we have not had a war with another country that directly affected people living in this country. This book led me to count my blessings. We live in a land of plenty and have not had to live with rationing of food or products in this country during my lifetime. We are truly blessed.
I enjoyed this book. I hope you enjoy it also.
Leona –
I really enjoyed this book. It was an easy but very enjoyable read. I loved the characters and how they all developed as the story progressed. Looking forward to reading more of this series.
Elizabeth Gray –
I throughly enjoyed this book from beginning to end
MerrylJames –
Well researched and full of period detail; the sort of things my mother would talk about from her childhood in a Midlands town. The characters are well drawn and the dialogue is believable and flows, as you would expect from a scriptwriter of Joanna’s quality. I shall definitely buy the next one.
Debbie –
An uplifting story with a strong and interesting heroine who tackles obstacles around her in a compelling and convincing way. Her integrity was obvious throughout and I enjoyed the experience of following her through this part of her story and cant wait for the sequels. The writing was engaging and absorbing, pulling the reader through the story nicely from start to finish . I thoroughly recommend this book, the author has done a great job with the story.
