John Boyne’s “All The Broken Places” is a gripping novel that won’t let go of you even after you have finished it. It’s the story of the life a woman who was born the daughter of the Commandant of a Nazi death camp. The story only briefly touches on that time. But of course, her family history casts a shadow over her entire life.
The novel travels through two separate tracks of time. It begins in 2022 where she lives as a 91-year old woman in London. We learn the current situation of her life. The novel then flashes back to protagonist and her mother fleeing from Germany to France after the war. The stories wend separately through the novel, growing closer in time until they finally connect at the last.
The story touches many lives but always comes back to the central question- how do people deal with evil, particularly when it permeates their own life.
The woman at the end of the novel is not the woman at the beginning. She has made a space and provided for those she loves, as she meets the current face of evil that has come into her life.
All The Broken Places is not easy reading. But it is first rate story telling. For those who like stories that follow world history, replete with interesting yet damaged characters, this may be the novel for you.

Rarely do I find myself truly emotionally vested in a book, but that wasnโt the case here. I was all in. If you liked The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, this is a MUST read.

The plot is unique to me; I was fascinated by the time line arrangement of the story.
It is gruesome, but not sensationally bloody.
I am following the author, but it will be awhile before I read another of his works. Judging the “books by its covers” , I’m reasonable sure the subjects will be similar.

What a thoroughly enjoyable book. Having read boy in the striped pyjamas I wasnโt aware there was a follow-up book until recently so immediately bought this and read this in a couple of days . The author revisits Gretelโs past and present life in this sequel and as a reader, I was invested to learn what had become of her after the war ended. It wasnโt too hard to read and I think in hindsight the author played down what difficulties she may have faced Immediately after the war ended. Nevertheless I would definitely choose this book as a book club read . A lovely twist at the end ( although to be honest, I found that Part of the story a bit far-fetched) would still recommend this as a five star read though.

Gretel betrachtet die Welt anders als Bruno, steht ihm aber um nichts nach. Sehen wir die Welt im vorigen Buch durch die Augen eines Kindes, so nehmen wir dieses Mal die Sicht der Erwachsenen Gretel in ihren unterschiedlichen Lebenslagen wahr. Sie ist sich ihrer Verantwortung bewusst, scheut aber die Auseinandersetzung mit der Vergangenheit. Die vielen Strรคnge ergeben am Ende ein in sich geschlossenes Bild und man versteht wie aus der 12-jรคhrigen Gretel die Frau wurde, die sie mit 91 schlieรlich ist.

To the great plethora of books about the devastation of Nazi Germany is added “All the Broken Places” by Irish writer John Boyne. While well-written and compulsively readable, the plot of this novel hinges on a falsehood — that the children of Nazi war criminals could be persecuted for the crimes of their parents. Having watched the excellent documentary “Hitler’s Children” when it came out about ten years ago, I immediately questioned this premise. I did some more research and found that I was right. The wives of Nazi elite could be brought in for questioning, to be sure, by the Nuremberg tribunal, but even they weren’t charged with crimes. The children were treated as children, innocent bystanders. So, without this reality, much of the motivation for the actions of the main character, Gretel Fernsby, is dubious. Her personal guilt for what happened to her brother makes more sense. But even this triggered something in my brain, for I knew I had heard this particular plot before. And, indeed, I read the author’s biography and found that he was the author of “The Boy in the Striped Pajamas”. I’d watched the movie years before. The plot of “The Boy in the Striped Pajamas” is also part of this book. The book moves along quite smartly, flipping between 2022 and the post-WW2 period and even mid twentieth-century, and I didn’t find this narrative technique hard to follow. There is no doubt that Boyne can spin a tale. The problem becomes the believability of the plot. There is also a lot of very unpleasant narrative about wife and child abuse that I found upsetting. Necessary to the plot, but just hard to read. Still, I found I couldn’t put it down because I kept wanting to know what was going to happen. So, all in all, a good read, but certainly not destined to be a classic.

Wow! A difficult topic to be sure – the atrocities of the German concentration camps and the aftermath. But, I loved the way the story was written flipping back and forth between then and now. I really liked that the back and forth was every few pages- too fast to loose track. Well written, lots of emotion and different perspectives and a few unexpected twists. I thought a great book!
