Don Fowler –
I have been using it for a few weeks now and shredded enough paper to fill 5 very large bags of crosscut paper as I converted 7 years of documents to digital pdf files. No problems at all in processing the paper and the large pull out basket helps process more paper with less mess than my previous shredder.

I really like this product. Really eats the stuff I put in. Cutters go a little slower but they run consistently steady while I feed it.

I had an old shredder that was given to me for free, and I used it for about 2 years without any problems. It finally got so dull that it would not shred anymore. I did a lot of research for a replacement in my price range + or – $100. There were a lot of choices out there, with most getting bad reviews more than good ones. Tough choices! I ran across the AmazonBasics 17 sheet shredder, and there were a lot of positive reviews on it. A few bad ones, but if you read them carefully you can see that they expected more from a shredder than it was designed to produce. After receiving the shredder in promised time, and unpacked it from a very well packaging system, it took me about 3 minutes to have it up and running. It was almost silent compared to my old one. It makes some noise, but not obtrusive at all.
I never need to shred more than about 5 or 6 sheets at a time, and it does a great job doing that. If you need to shred 17 sheets at once, you will be disappointed. Back up and feed a few sheets at a time and it will work great. It will not take much more time as it shreds rather quickly. I really enjoy the on standby mode, as it is ready to shred whenever you put a piece of paper in the slot. The paper is shredded into small pieces about 3/4 of an inch long. The basket is easy to remove and empty, although it will make a small mess if you do not manually run it for a few seconds without any paper run through it to clear any shreds from the cutters. Overall it is a great home office shredder that does an excellent job as long as you use it sensibly and do not try to overwork it. I highly recommend this shredder and would buy another one if I ever wear this one out.

First one broke after the first day. Amazon replaced it and the second one failed after a month.

I’ve owned several shredders in the past. Typically I’ve cheaped out and bought some of the smaller models that sit on top of a trash can. While this isn’t an industrial shredder, it is easily the largest (and most powerful) shredder I’ve ever purchased. I bought this unit after discovering that some of the boxes I’ve been slogging around from one move to another were unlabeled document boxes. I wanted something that could destroy both old documents and credit cards. After using this for a couple of days, I’d say it fits the bill.
The shredder has two modes of operation, continuous and sensor based. If you leave it on sensor mode it’ll chew up whatever you put in the opening after a slight pause. With it set to sensor mode feeding multiple envelopes one after another seems to work fairly well, but the unit has a tendency to stop mid-shred from time to time. It doesn’t seem like it’s jamming, it seems more like the unit thinks it’s completed one of the prior documents and simply stops. This is easily corrected by placing the unit either in reverse and flipping the partially shredded document over after it spits it out, or switching it to continuous shred mode. There’s one lever that handles all the functions (power on, power off, shred forward and shred in reverse) and they’re clearly labeled. I’ve been putting complete envelopes into it and so far it handles folded documents inside an envelope quite well (unopened credit cards statements and the like, on average about 4 to 5 sheets in size). For larger pieces I’ve been opening them and feeding the sheets through unfolded to ease the strain on the motor. Thus far it’s done up to the rated 17 sheets with ease.
The basket inside it is fairly large (I believe it is 6 gallons) and the recessed part for the handle has a plastic window you can look through to see how full it is. I’ve emptied it a couple of times and so far I haven’t had any issues of spillage. I haven’t filled it completely and I generally don’t use a new bag without first putting some items in it as that helps keep the bag open when you have both hands on the basket. The directions say you can run it for several minutes before giving it time to cool down, there’s an LED indicator on it to to display if you’re running it too long without a break, though I’ve yet to run it long enough to have that come on. I pretty much have just run it til the basket is almost full, then given it time to cool off.
Overall I’m very pleased with this purchase. The biggest issue I’ve run into yet has been resisting the urge to shred every piece of paper in the house.

Quiet, takes a good raft of paper. No complaints.

Came fully assembled (wheels were installed) and it was packed rather well. The usual Post Office damage to the box but the shredder didn’t have a scratch on it. The thing is much quieter than the one it replaced. I had 4 banker boxes full of past records left to shred and it did the job nicely. I did not try to shred the paper as fast as possible, and I didn’t count how many sheets I stuck in at one time but it took what I fed it. I ruined the shredder I had before this one so I was trying to be more realistic with the amount I stuck in at one time and how long I ran it before giving it a chance to cool down. The waste bin was full or almost full about the time the cooling fan would start so that was a good excuse to take a break and empty the bin. The instructions didn’t say anything about lubrication but everyone that I talked to and the sites that I perused on line did suggest it. The length of time or amount of paper between lubrications was a never given. Being as the lack of lubrication was what caused the demise of my old machine, I decided more than enough was better than not enough and lubed it just prior to dumping each bin full. I got a pint bottle of Canola oil and would dribble a line of it across a couple of sheets of paper, put a couple of sheets of paper on top of them and feed it into the shredder. When the shredder stopped I would put it into reverse and let it run for a few seconds to get all the shredding teeth lubed. All my record shredding is done for this year and the machine still sounds like new. The only thing that would make this machine better is if the slot that you feed the paper into was a little bit longer. The normal sheet of paper is 8 1/2″ wide and the slot is 9″ wide so there isn’t much extra room. Other than that, it has proven to be a good shredder.
