I was comparing blu-ray players in the sub-$100 range, among them was the Samsung BD-5700. It seemed to have the features I wanted, but a lot of Amazon reviewers cited problems with the Netflix streaming and other bugs, mostly in early 2014. A lot of reviewers presumably returned them. Oddly enough, later reviews (summer 2014) swung favorable following a firmware update Samsung made available…
…lo and behold, a little more digging and I found this listing for the “Certified Refurbished” BD-5700 at over $20 less than the new model. A full-featured Wifi Blu-Ray player for $55…? Surely these are the earlier returns simply needing the firmware update, right? I took a shot, and could not be happier!
I’m not sure what exactly was “refurbished”: I could tell my player had been opened, but it was cosmetically perfect and even had the protective film on the plastic casing. There was no twisty-tie on the power cord (oh boo hoo!) and the batteries for the remote were loose even though the remote was still in its baggie. Eh, who cares… those loose batteries just saved me almost 25 bucks. But perhaps other units might be different…?
At any rate, I hooked it up and it turned on, quietly. Configured my network, went right to the update menu and sure enough, it had the older firmware, with a much never version available. Downloading and installing the new version took all of two minutes, and DONE. No problems with Netflix that I can tell (granted, I haven’t marathoned anything yet but I’m a light viewer anyway). Some home-made stormchasing blu-rays played perfectly, the DVD upsampling is as good as what my old Sony DVD and/or PS3 would do, and the coax-digital sound works perfectly with my A/V receiver, allowing use as a CD player without turning on the TV. Noice!
The player is quiet, the interface is quick and easy to navigate, but some of the apps are fluff. I mean, yay, an opera browser app store for useless games and screensavers, oh my. Facebook? On a BD player? Perish the addicts, please. Pandora and Netflix and such are cool if you use them I guess. There is NO AMAZON STREAMING which is a bit of a letdown but oh well, there’s chromecast and last years’ smartphone for that.
Oh yeah, the remote works my 2008 Samsung TV as well with no setup or programming so that’s a nice bonus.
Anyway… if you found this “refurb” listing and are comparing to the “new” – buy the refurb, download the new firmware, and it’ll be the easiest/sneakiest $20+ Amazon coupon you ever found.

Don’t waste your money and buy a new one. I bought this unit and once it was finally up and running, it worked great. But suddenly, it stopped doing anything other than turning on or off. There’s no output, the disc slot will not open, etc. I’m very disappointed as my kids used this to stream Netflix and it worked great, but now there’s nothing we can do since the crappy 30-day window is gone. If you’re going to certify something and put your name behind it, then I suggest you ensure it works longer than a month and a half. There’s $65 I’ll never get back.

It works, but isn’t the best… I bought this primarily to watch Netflix/Amaon Prime (later found out that Amazon Prime is not an option on this) and to watch the occasional bluray/dvd. Everything works fine, although Samsung and Netflix servers don’t always get along well. I’ve had to do a factory reset which reinstalls the Netflix program twice, as the program completely stopped working. Samsung customer service is quick and helpful. If I paid full price this would be a 2 star review, but being the cheapest out there at the time of purchase, and refurbished, I won’t complain.
Pros–
-Works.. Does everything it’s supposed to.
Cons–
-Responds to any remote input VERY slowly. It takes up to 5 seconds to pause a video or show on Netflix.
-No apps available to control unit like Roku offers. Makes typing a huge pain to search for things on youtube or Netflix, or to login to these accounts.

This player works better than I expected. This review will be mostly on features OTHER than its ability to play blu rays (which it does perfectly). The main use of this is to play videos off a wireless network drive DLNA device. It connects easily with the home wireless network and its built in media player wireless streams content nearly perfectly. The only thing it does not do with DLNA media is either fast forward, or rewind a video (the player does not support it). What it does do, however, is stream every video type I tried (mostly MKV, MP4, MPEG-#, .avi). It even streams 1080p video without losing frames. My test video was Avatar (video file info is .MKV, 10.9 gig) which played after a few moments of loading. Loading, which brings me to my second issue.
The loading screen using its built in media player seems to be constantly loading. If your loading a folder with more than 10 videos, it could be 30
seconds or more. It loads Netflix faster than it does video on your own network. Netflix works perfectly as well. It has a few more built in programs which I have not tried using.
Overall, I feel that for $50, this works with DLNA network video even better than my PS3 (Playstation 3), which is saying something. If your looking for something to play your already owned videos on your computer or network hard drive, this will be a great player. Why they have a remote with as many buttons as it has is absurd (Look at a Roku remote for guidance Samsung!) The DLNA service I use on my computer is Playstation Media Server, which is free to use and download and I highly recommend it.
