My objective was to convert this Cisco enterprise IP phone into a standalone SIP phone for use with my VoIP service provider. By installing a Linksys SPA9000 VoIP PBX box as an local intermediate (to bypass the NAT protocol), I have achieved basic placing and receiving calls. As expected with this model, voice quality at both ends is excellent.

The key is to create the correct SEP-mac-.cnf.xml file to direct the firmware load and the configuration settings. This phone arrived with a recent version of Cisco’s SCCP firmware. From the Cisco downloads area, I selected the most recent version of the SIP firmware to replace that.

When the phone arrived (showing, by the way, no visible signs of wear), because I already had a good starting point for the configuration file, TFTP server, ring list, dial plan, and so on, the phone powered up and registered essentially the first time I plugged it in. (Note these phones require a PoE switch or injector since they derive their power from the Ethernet connection.)

(Updated May 8, 2021) My VoIP provider suggested switching UDP to TCP and turning on the phone’s NAT configuration setting (which entails telling it your public IP address). With other change to the NAT settings at the VoIP provider’s end, the phone now registers directly with the provider and places and receives calls. I’d really like to get the Directory button to bring up a local phone directory, but that is still a work-in-progress.

With the success in registering directly with my VoIP provider, I went ahead and purchased a second 7965G from the same seller. The second phone isn’t quite as pristine as the first, but still marginally passes Amazon’s visual inspection criteria.

(Updated May 10, 2021) The Directory button now brings up my personal contacts list. It turns out that Cisco IP phones don’t work with the Apache web server.

We have replaced a good number of 7942G Cisco endpoints/phones with these 7965G.

All came in a general working order. All were successfully re-imaged to SIP. All have excellent call quality with both speaker and phone handset.

Two phones looked practically brand-new. No slight scratches or smudges anywhere. Either they were spares that never made it out of the storage boxes, or those folks didn’t use their phones enough to cause any wear. A third phone was also almost in like-new condition.

We have two phones that barely make Amazon’s refurbished quality statement:
One has three somewhat sticky keys, one of the number keys, the down arrow, and the message button (probably from heavy use). It’s not quite bad enough to bother with a return, but you do have to push those 3 buttons a bit harder to make them perform their function; it’s just enough that the phone does slide back a bit on a polished surface.

One phone had some cleaning issues: still had the sticky sticker residue on the phone body still next to the headset icon. The same phone had something on the handle that we removed, and the display was blurry because of past finger oils/use. In fact, several of the phones are a bit extra shiny just to the left of the headset button. We think stickers were likely removed from a bunch of them. However, it’s really hard to see unless you hold the phone sideways and look from the side to catch the change in reflection.

Does not include a power cord for this phone. Would have been tremendously helpful to know beforehand. Moreover, this is not refurbished if it’s still missing parts. I had to spend an additional $25 for a power cord.

Phone looked great and i am sure it works….but you actually need the Cisco System to hook up the phone. I am a small 2 phone business and this will not work just by plugging it in and connecting the phone jack.
