This DNX997XR replaced my 9yr old Kenwood DNX7190HD. Installed on my 2002 F150 (with an installation kit from Crutchfield). All of the 7190 wiring connectors were exactly the same so I just moved them over. The head unit dimensions were also exactly the same, so the whole head unit swap took me 40 mins. start to finish. 🙂 Tuning took longer of course.
Hardware: I’m running 4x 3-way 6×9″ infinity door speakers on one 400w rockford 4-way amp plus 2x 10″ kicker boxed subs on one 400w rockford 2-way amp. This setup renders very crisp highs and the base rattles by old fillings 😉
The 997’s functions layout is intuitive, very similar to my old 7190 so it was easy for me to get around and find what I needed quickly. The EQ works well and is clearly responsive and separate sub controls also allow for great customization, but hands-down the best new feature (for me) is the integrated crossover. This feature allowed me to do some very fine frequency tuning between the 6×9″ and the subs. I am very impressed with the improvement in overall system performance this new 997 gave me over my old 7190 using the same speakers and amps.
The HD radio latches on to HD stations faster than my old 7190 and displays more of radio station’s data stream, USB MP3s load faster, Nav functions & response time is much faster… the system processor on this units is clearly several times faster than 7190. I could go on-and-on but there are several unboxing videos on youtube that will cover the all the features in detail.
The only difficulty i’ve had so far is setting up all of the phone app features on the head unit, but it’s probably me.
overall, I am impressed with the speed & performance of the new processor and EXTREMELY pleased with the improvement in sound quality of my legacy components. If given the chance to buy something else , would i buy this one again? … yes.
