It’s been a few years and because I am older, I do like having a “real” phone in my house. Maybe that’s an odd thing to younger people, but at my age, I remember having ROTARY DIAL phones in my parent’s house! We had a few phones in the house, but just one phone number for all of us! So that’s the past, yes, but I do feel a bit more comfortable with an actual handset like I used to. This Ooma service was very easy to set up and I have a phone number that is separate from my cell phone. That’s a good thing too! For me, this Ooma was a comforting thing to set up and I now have that handset I wanted with its own phone number.

We were finally bumped up in our Internet data speed at home enough to be able to give the Ooma line a try out, from 1 Mbps to 3 Mbps.
I know it has many, many mixed reviews, but so far, and it’s been a few months now, I am very happy with the purchase and switching to Ooma from the old, very expensive landline.
I bought the Ooma certified refurbished “Telo” which saved a chunk of money right there and it has worked great from day one and looked brand new when I got it. The slightly used box was the only giveaway it was a used unit.
My biggest gripe with the Ooma brand is lack of clear or current information, in the box or on the website. Sure it shows the basics but no info on things like turning down the brightness level on the Telo unit, it is a nice blue, and you can change the color, but it’s really bright out of the box, I did find out how to dim it online. Or that when you “port the landline number” it was with us anyway, porting automatically closed our landline account, which we found out when we went to close it ourselves. Sure if you hunt around online you can find it, but I think it should be easier to locate on the company site and keep it updated!
As for savings? It IS THERE!! We were spending almost $50.00 a month for just basic phone service and caller ID, now, after paying a little over $120.00 for the entire YEAR, there’s a saving of over $400.00, and it now costs only $4.24 a month, just the local state and government fees. LOVE IT.
The call quality has been pretty good so far, yes I’ve had the echo calls but since we don’t use the home phone an awful lot what I love the most is being able to monitor the phone from my computer or smart phone while out and about.
I feel you are going to want to just spend the money and go with the premiere plan. The basic Ooma plan is just too basic and about all of the cool features are with the better plan anyway, it is worth the money. I’ll just pay for that once a year though.
Also keep the number you get to start the service as a second number or get another number to be the second number, it can give you a second line on your cell phone through the Ooma app.
And that Do Not Allow Calls blacklist? Perfect because before switching almost all our calls on the home phone had become sales and ‘Robo’ calls! I had gone online and completed the “Do Not Call Registry” several times over the years but apparently the businesses that call never got the message so this system works fantastic for that feature alone! Now, a call from a known or unknown number that more likely than not is a sales call can be added to that list. Sure our Panasonic phone system allowed up to 10 blacklist numbers but we were getting far more than that and for the landline company to help would cost even more money!
I most recently purchased one the the HD2 handsets for the home Ooma system, a used one that like the Telo looked and worked like brand new. So far even that has turned out a better buy than expected with the overall low ratings. Maybe because we live in a rural area, but the experience has been really good so far.
If down the road problems arise and we don’t like the Ooma we’ll just drop a home phone all together and just use our cells!

This device is amazing. I just got off a very long, long distance call using my recently arrived Ooma Internet phone device. The voice quality throughout was superb. Setting up was very easy, the only hitch was due to me plugging the ethernet cable in the wrong plug, but it gave me an opportunity to successfully interact with tech support. I think this unit will save me a significant amount of money. I bought it “renewed” but they could easily have sold it as brand new.

If you want phone service cheap and dependent on an internet connection this is the way to go. Just plug the Internet source directly into the device, it works independently of your computer and router if you use one, unless you go with the wifi adaptor, I didn’t. Setup and registration was easy, good quality free unlimited long distance in the USA for a small fee which varies by State I gather. For me the 911 and FCC fees total $4.32/Month. A land line would cost me ten x more at least. For me the potential increase in reliability gained by having a land line is not worth the extra expense. This is a back up for my cell phone which I rely on for ‘on call’ work purposes. Due to a recent incident involving cell phone malfunction I purchased this as cheap insurance. When making calls from home I get much better voice quality on both ends (I’m told).

Works great, only issue is when i call my sister cell phone I get a busy signal, she had the same issue with the device until her old number was ported over then no issues. I will call customer service to see if there is any resolutions for this.

Great Option for those on a plan with bundled a Phone. After reviewing our recent provider cost increase, I realized the old home phone was a factor. I’d had tried various cheap VoIP phone options in the past, and they weren’t great. I was happy to find Ooma was a seamless switch, along with great sound quality. There was a fee to port the number. I couldn’t be happier. We rarely call out on the phone, and we have children, so we like having a landline option. From a hookup perspective, I just needed to move the phone line from the Cable Modem to the Ooma plug. Then I just needed to plug the Ooma into the home Router. I like that you can play voice mails right from the top of the Ooma box too. I expect it to pay for itself in 4 months. I couldn’t be happier with the results.
