It is not that much better than a 7900x in most scenarios, but it runs so much cooler and after selling the Ryzen 7600 it is replacing, it will only cost me about $250 tops so If you are on the fence Id probably go 7900x because it is cheaper but there is a lot to be said for a lower tdp

I am using an Msi 670E Gaming Plus Wifi mobo. I had an Amd 7700x CPU. Flashed bios and popped this 9900x in. After resetting bios. Up and running solid as a rock. Noticeable difference in EVERYTHING. I read that these 9000 were Meh. I did not need the upgrade. But I wanted it!. Runs COOLER. Runs FASTER. Cheap for what you get. I turn off Precision Overdrive so running at Base speed.
They are coming out with a Win 11 update that will further optimize them so to me it is definitely worth the money.
    Beasty.

CPU has dead memory controller. would not memory train on first boot. Tried 2 different kinds of ram in every config as well as 2 different motherboards. Would not post even after memory training for over an hour

This is more than any normal/gamer user will need now or in the near future. However you need to at least put a 360 aio with this. If you can do a custom liquid coolant you’d be even safer.
With my build we are using an aio, 7 more case fans, and I expected it to keep lower temperatures with gaming, but no, on max this gets close to 70°C, sometimes 72°C.
Regular use, stays in the 45-50°C

I think this will be the next processor for programmers, designers, content creators, for overall productivity. But far away that it is the option for a gamer. The truth is that the performance is excellent, now compared to its predecessor I think I would simply wait for the price to fall. Now if you’re one of those who can’t wait for the last of the market, give it all that you won’t regret…! 💻🎮 #technology #gaming #productivity

Coming from the Ryzen 9 7900X, the 9900X at worst shares the same performance and up to 15% improvement at best. However its efficiency is greatly improved with a reduction in TDP from 120W to 170W on the 7900X.

Using a 240mm air cooler normalized to 40dB (sweet spot for fan and pump noise), I ran Cinebench R23’s 10 minute multi-core test. I saw a 17-degree drop in temperatures from 95c to 78c on tdie. Score 33,003 over the 7900X’s 28,660.

There is no doubt the 9900X is powerful and more efficient , but AMD’s pricing and marketing has nerfed the launch. This chip does not have gaming improvements you’d typically see in the X3D lineup. The 9900X and 9950X chips are made for productivity. You’ll see great performance in games but the value proposition doesn’t make sense when you can pickup a 5800X3D or 7800X3D.

If you’re building in a small case and coming from a 7900X this is a good improvement event, thermals alone make it worth it in my opinion. It is imoortant to note that AMD has changed the location of the temperature sensors but it is unknown if that plays a big role in the lower thermals. Numbers above are from the hottest sensor so that should be close to spec.

If you’re happy with temperatures and performance then you should skip this launch. I’d recommend this CPU to new buyers when the price gets closer to $500-550 CAD.

I believe the 9900X is a good replacement to the 7900X. I would recommend waiting to pick this up until they work out some of the performance kinks with Windows and for the price to come down.
