It worked for about 6 months, then the impeller just stopped spinning. No luck reviving it. Not recommended.

I just read the recent negative review on this filter so felt I must chime in! I got this because my boyfriend was getting very grumpy about the noisy air pump in our bedroom. This filter, on the other hand, soon stopped him complaining 😀 It is almost completely silent, if you listen hard then there is a very faint hum, but no more than that. Now then, I have this in a 5 gallon, NOT a 10 gallon, I’m not sure it would be enough filtration for a 10, but for a 5 it works great. Water is clear, and the flow is STRONG (I’ve remedied this by turning the head to face the wall). I would say the only minus is that when you turn off the filter to take it out and clean it, the bottom part can fall off, and then all the crap that was in it goes back into the water. This is annoying, but I’m still working on a better removal technique, I’m sure it exists.
All in all, the pros of good price, quietness, strength of flow, and water clarity outweigh that one con.
Oh, I also am not using the filter media that came with it. I have a cut up bit of aquaclear sponge and a little but of seachem matrix in there 🙂

Arrived the next day which was a great surprise!
Note: I am using the 10gal model to cycle a 5.5gal aquarium
First off, I’m actually very impressed with this filter it is almost completely silent. However, I can hear the propeller and motor running at night when everything is quiet. It is certainly not too loud to ignore.
The outtake is fully adjustable which is nice. Not only can you turn the nozzle to direct the flow, the height is adjustable as well as the whole outtake tube itself can pivot so that you can adjust it to be completely perpendicular to the rest of the unit! Unfortunately for me the flow adjustment was stuck so I have to leave it running on full (thankfully this is fine for me).
The inside composes of a small sponge filter and a green plastic piece that acts as a surface for bacteria to grow on. This is honestly a great improvement on other internal filters I’ve used which only have the sponge with no additional biological component.
Overall this filter is certainly worth the few extra dollars compared to other internal filters and I would definitely recommend it to other people who need an internal filter but are hoping for a little bit extra.

Works good. The filter itself is smaller than I expected, it fits in my hand (I have small hands) and doesn’t look at all obtrusive resting at the back of my tank. The suction cups are just great, I know it seems like a weird thing to be excited about but they are just the best suction cups I’ve ever had in my ancient little tank, it is so easy to move the filter around, yet when I put it in place, it stays exactly as I leave it.
A cool bonus is the ability to rotate the head so the water can streamed out at a different angle. I tried a few different positions, and the filter kept on working the same, but in the end I left it in its original stance for aesthetic reasons.
The filter is QUIET. I had gotten used to the loud hum and trickle of my old filter but this one is very gentle, and soothing to fall asleep to.
One recommendation: DO NOT use the filter cartridges they send with. Buy your own media. I got a nice little filter foam and put it in along with some ceramic rings instead. I just take it apart during my weekly water changes, rinse out the foam then put the ceramic rings in and pop it right back together, no problem.
As for the pictures, fyi that the ugly scratches on my 40yr old tank have nothing to do with the filter.
Update: One year later and this filter still works great! Love it.

As someone who’s a light sleeper, I needed a very quiet filter for my bedroom tank and I’m very pleased with how quiet it actually is. Almost inaudible if anything, a very low humming sound if you listen for it.
The flow of the outtake by default is set to MAX but can be adjusted, though it took a bit of fiddling to figure it out. You have to extend the outtake tube, pull that part off completely and give the nozzle a good twist until it starts clicking (Requires a bit of force). Once it’s set to your desired flow just push the extension piece back into the outtake tube. It’s nice that the whole outtake tube can swivel and rotate as well.
This filter is pretty compact but spacious enough to fill it with your own bio media and sponges. If you go that route, make sure that the bio media doesn’t shake around otherwise it’ll make an annoying rattling sound when the filter is running. A bit of poly-fil to fill the gaps works wonders (Keeps the water clear too!)
Overall, this filter is working perfectly in my 10 gal and my betta and other fish seem happy with the adjusted flow.

This filter is awesome. Our tank is so clear and quite now. I dismantled the filter and have been taking it apart to refill the activated charcoal and backwash it. Done that twice in a month but I think it actually starts working better after it’s captured a little so I’m going to start going 4 weeks between filter backwashing. Using the mini model in a 10Gal tank, it’s small but very appropriate for a 10 gal tank. Get’s the job done!
Update, 1 1/2 years later. Still working great. I just keep rebuilding the filter and cleaning into the motor parts (which pop out easily and magnetize back into place). Adding an updated photo (with white sand). Tank is still perfectly balanced with only this super small, silent filter (). Wish I knew about this years ago. Not only does it run great but it also saves water over the waterfall type filters, much lower water evaporation.
I’ve gone as long as 3 months without cleaning the filter and I feel like it could have probably kept going. Just be sure not to disturb the live colony (after it’s established), use water from the tank in a separate container to keep that culture safe when you’re working on the filter. I’ll take pics of the beneficial colony and update this next time I’m in there.
After dismantling the filter that came with the unit I then throw away the old charcoal contents then clean the blue mesh and plastic casing really well. I reinsert the now clean (blue) filter material and sprinkle in some Fluval clearmax… it only takes a gram or two, make sure not to overfill… you want it loose in there, NOT packed tight. I used to close it up and put a tiny rubber band on it but realized the rubber band is unnecessary. Just close it, slide it back in, prime it by placing under water and getting the air out… then fire it up for another 1-3 months.
Great product, you won’t be disappointed.
Keep in mind, a few tips. My tank is balanced with plants and bottom feeders too. 1 beta, 1 cory catfish, 1 otocinclus and 1 snail… only the beta is fed and very little. The other guys live off the tank itself, without them… it WILL crash. Snail cleans the glass, cory sticks to the sand and oto cracks out on everything, never stops cleaning… hardest worker I have. Good sand helps the ecosystem too. 😉 – hope this helps someone.

*My tank is a round 3.5 gallon with the following dimensions: 10.4 in DIA x 10.7 in H (26.4 x 27.1 cm). It houses a nano culture and live plants/moss (ember tetras, ghost shrimp, butterfly pleco, and longfin leopard danios)- Hopefully this info helps anyone with a similar size tank and creatures
This filter is so quiet I keep checking to see if it’s running! When it was first installed it in the tank there was a bit of noise (and I was definitely ready to send it back-theres nothing worse than a noisy filter), but all the sounds finally resolved- give it about 24 hours. The cartridge is easy to remove and clean and doesn’t clog easily. So far I haven’t even found snails in it. It is pretty small and has a low profile which is important for my tank. It suctions well onto the curved glass wall, and I love that it’s submergible!!! It’s stays affixed securely but is easy to slide up and off the wall for cleaning.
Be aware the the flow of the filter is kind of a lot for a nano tank. The flow is NOT ADJUSTABLE. However you can adjust/turn the head of the filter toward a rock or the glass so it deflects it to a much more manageable intensity. This has worked perfectly in my tank. My fish friends have not had issues since the adjustment, it seems just right now. With that being said the flow is REALLY INTENSE so beware when placing it in the tank for the first time/plugging it in-if the head is pointing up you will have a huge mess. I would recommend testing it in a bowl first with some tank water to get it all primed through and so you are aware of the intensity. Maybe it’s my existing tank environment or maybe it’s the new filter, but my tank chemistry has been spot on since purchasing this filter. I’ve not needed a water change which is awesome because nano fish just don’t tolerate frequent water changes well.
Overall I would highly recommend this filter!!! I’ve been through several filters in the past couple years that have either died, been noisy, aren’t compatible with the shape of my tank or just don’t keep my tank clean. The only thing I took a star off for was that the flow is not adjustable. But like I mentioned, adjusting the head does help to adjust the current is causes in the tank.
