I have purchased 5 of these for various builds and they are excellent drives. Very reliable and accurate reads. Rock solid stable. Highly recommended.

I’ve come to trust the ASUS brand when it comes to internal computer components (such as motherboards, video cards, etc..), so I decided that going with their peripherals would be a good route to do.

The DVD-ROM drive came in a well packaged box, the drive wrapped and then placed in a foam housing to keep it safe during shipping and handling. There is also an included CD-ROM which contains several piece of software, none of which are required to install the drive and use it (this is on a Windows 7 machine). The packaging includes 4 mounting screws to secure into your computer case, but nothing else beyond that (no SATA cable, etc.)

Installation is extremely straightforward, and Windows 7 automatically recognized the drive upon boot and installed proper drivers. As previously mentioned, drive works without any of the software on the included disc, but the disc includes: E-Hammer, which permanently deletes a CD-R or DVD-R, E-Green which will help with power consumption, and a ‘free’ copy of Nero 9 – note that the ‘free’ copy does not allow you to partake in the full suite of Nero burning utilities and is somewhat crippled unless you purchase the upgrade to the full version.

The drive is overall not that loud, but will still make audible noise under operation. Writes CDs and DVDs quickly and without error. Tray has a good strength to it and does not feel flimsy. Green operational LED is large enough to see, but not annoying. Overall, a solid drive for the money.

I have an HP Pavillion about 8 years old. DVD writer stopped working after upgrade from Windows 8 to 10. HP said so sad too bad. No updated driver but we’ll sell you a whole new system! This baby works great out of the box. Windows had the correct driver. A steal at $25 with Prime delivery!!!

I did not order these for anything other then wanting 2 drives installed that could read/write both DVD’s and CD’s….Although, I noticed after I received them while installing that they both had “M Disc” on the corner of the disc tray. These are the correct model number on the drive but the pictures on the site do not look like them…And in the Amazon pics there is no “M Disc” on the drive trays. I first looked at the “questions/answers” on Amazon about these drives and the answers were all stating that they did not read or write M Discs at all. Could not understand why Asus would put it on the drive trays if they could do neither…So I then went to the Asus site and looked the model number up. According to Asus these DO read and write M Discs (in addition to dvd’s and cd’s)…..The Asus site states the following:

    Model
    DRW-24B3ST
    Color
    BLACK
    Read Speed (max)
    DVD-ROM : 16X
    DVD+R : 16X
    DVD-R : 16X
    DVD+R(SL, M-DISC) : 12X
    DVD+RW : 12X
    DVD-RW : 12X
    DVD+R(DL) : 12X
    DVD-R(DL) : 12X
    CD-ROM : 48X
    CD-R : 48X
    Write Speed (max)
    DVD+R : 24X
    DVD-R : 24X
    DVD+R(SL, M-DISC) : 4X
    DVD+RW : 8X
    DVD-RW : 6X
    DVD+R(DL) : 8X
    DVD-R(DL) : 8X
    CD-R : 48X
    CD-RW : 24X

It states that these drives can read M Discs at 12x and write M Discs at 4x. I purchased the drives for $22.99 each with free 2 day prime shipping….If it is all true and they read/write M Discs then I think these are one of the best deals on Amazon. Have not tried to read or write an M disc because I do not have one to try out right now…But have used the drives to burn cd’s and dvd’s and they work great….Will update my review after I get the opportunity to try out an M Disc….But Asus says they do work with M Discs.

My old drive I pulled over from I think two systems refused to play or run anything, even though everything appeared find in the diagnostics. I tried a couple of things and finally picked up this drive.

If you have a non AHCI motherboard, SATA components should work out of the box, even on a fresh XP install 32 and 64 bit. XP will throw an error when launching the software included with the drive on the installation CD, but it still works regardless. Even without the software, the drive works plug and play.
I’m also surprised at how little noise this generates. I have an LG BD Drive on another computer that is quite a bit louder.

There aren’t a ton of use-cases these days for CD/DVD drives but if you need to burn or read CD/DVDs, ASUS has always been my go-to brand. The drives work and I only had to get a new one as the previous one stopped opening reliably (it still eventually worked though!) after 8+ YEARS of pretty heavy usage. You could pay a couple dollars less for a no-name brand but go for the ASUS if you can. I haven’t had an issue so far.
