We’re a Linux household and I bought my wife a new HP laptop for Christmas. Built in wifi worked in Linux, but would not recover when the laptop is put to sleep. She made due with an older EDIMAX usb wifi I had around, but the speed wasn’t great. This device has in kernel support for kernel 4.x and up and if I use the 5Ghz band she’s getting our full 100Mb/s running speedtest (before it was like 10-12). I tried some different usb devices before, and they all needed drivers you had to compile that didn’t want to build against her kernel, or the performance was only about 50% better than the EDIMAX. This one just works!

Works like a charm for the price.

Pros:
– Great speeds. Consistent output. No latency or slowdowns during the day.
– 5ghz support. Blazing fast. Less inteference from neighbours. Live in a very busy flat, usually have disconnects on 2.4ghz
– Very small form factor. Unobtrusive compared to bigger models. Personally dislike large adapters, so this is great
– Plug and play, no driver install was needed for me. Windows may have installed it automatically. This may vary.
Cons:
– Bad 2.4ghz performance. I don’t think this adapter is suited to 2.4ghz very well, so I think it may be purposely more optimized for 5ghz. This is fine for me as I normally use 5ghz and have a fairly new router.
– Sometimes disconnects. Very rarely and it will automatically reconnect so I don’t have to do anything.. I think this happens because the device overheats, and I find that isolating the USB at the back or front of your PC (don’t crowd it with lots of neighbouring USB devices) helps, because it provides more airflow.
Very happy with this one so far (~2 months old). Make sure your router supports 5ghz to get the most out of it.

I purchased this product because I’d read that it works well with certain flavors of Linux. Unfortunately this does not include Debian 11 at the time I’m writing this.
The device works well for 2.4GHz wifi but has some issues connecting at 5GHz. This may be related to unusual characters in the wifi network name – I haven’t had time to test this theory yet.
Based on my experience with other issues of this nature, it’s likely this device will be better supported by the time Debian 12 comes out.
