Gusto –
I bought this mic which rivaled the SM-57 due to a shoot out comparing the mics when used with a guitar amplifier. This microphone is great for my amplifier. It is also pretty good for vocals but you must be pretty close to it or turn up the gain a lot. In other words you should have this directly in front of your mouth if you want the best sound. I use an IO2 to record and this mic can pick up a ton of sound with high gain on. I tested this briefly on my djembe and I highly recommend having drum stands when recording with this to hold them steady. The mid an treble response are excellent but I think the bass could be a bit better, with a simple eq and some easy editing it should be fine. The sound is very accurate to real life which was one reason I chose it.
The stand is also excellent and is full sized it is a boom like in the picture and works great for micing almost everyting, the cable is also pretty great, however it is a bit longer than I expected which is no problem.

Definitely my plan “B” snare mic. For a problematic snare that’s difficult to get right live with my proven condenser mic setup, I’ll go with the i5. Also good for a fat rock snare sound. I do a lot of one-off gigs and carry mics I feel I must have with me to get the sound I want. This mic is one of them.

Ordered this mic about a month ago. Rigged it up to my upright bass using an amp grabber and putting the mic at the treble f hole. Dropped the 5 kHz slider down on my amp a little and had a great bass response. The next week I mic’d the banjo in a gig that the bluegrass gospel band played. Ran it straight to the board. Never had better sound from our banjo in the 12 years our band has been together! In the last two Sundays I have mic’d the bass amp at Church instead of using the built in DI on the amp to feed the board. Sounds so much better. This mic is great for the price. I tested the Shure SM57 on my bass but it just doesn’t seem to have the same response and sound that the Audix I5 does.

My friend recommended I buy the Audix I5, he said it was his favorite mic for live performance (he’s a drummer). I bought one for my home studio and micd everything from an acoustic guitar to a tamborine and this mic is amazing for the price. With the SM-57 and 58 setting the gold standard this is a notch above. Which is why I bought another one with this package. I paid $99 for the mic alone at a local retailer. I paid the same here and got a really good samson mic stand AND a cable! Talk about getting hooked up. Although the I-5 is pretty good for live vocal performance, I wouldn’t use it in a recording situation. As for micing cabs and drums this is a great mic for the price. They’re pretty rugged and sound fantastic.

Make no mistake, this is a professional quality microphone for recording a wide range of instruments from acoustic guitars, to guitar amp cabs, to snare drums. I just wish the rest of my equipment was as good to realize the full potential of this mic. You definitely want to get a good preamp and computer interface or mixing board to do home recordings. Most places sell just the mic for $99, here you also get a great stand which someone would probably want to charge you an arm and a leg for, included in the deal. The stand is great too, it’s sturdy, rugged and great for recording guitar cabs as it is very versatile too. I don’t see how you can hesitate on this deal. Get This!

I took my time and did some pretty extensive research before buying this (my first) mic. Having done about a billion gigs before, but rarely requiring amplification I needed to take the plunge and get my own for a series of recent performances.
I play a 1967 Conn Mellophonium. A kind of a bell front French Horn with small bore .500” trombone like characteristics sound wise (Think Stan Kenton c1967). I have to say that the Audix is absolutely spot on for this horn, whilst not specifically designed for horn use either.
The Mellophonium can totally obliterate a band in the wrong hands, delivering some pretty hardcore if potentially nasty power output especially above the staff and above written high C. Exciting certainly, but not always so subtle! This mic took all of this energy easily in its stride, highlighting exactly what I wanted response wise and respecting the rest sound wise. Its incredibly well built and robust plus it looks decent too.
Whilst I realise that not many bands like mine feature a Mellophonium, I would nigh on guarantee that the i5 will make a great trombone microphone without a doubt. It is also very sensibly priced I thought for a first purchase like mine.
