Everyone needs a quality socket set. On our land, with all of the projects we have (be they auto, maintenance, or home improvement), we have several for different needs. So far, I’m happy with this particular set. There are many different reasons to like this set, but here are the four that stand out.
1. It has a five-degree arc swing. Which means you can use it in the tightest of places. I had to replace a variable valve timing solenoid, which has the most annoying placement of a 10mm bolt. Had the extension, but wouldn’t have even needed it since you don’t need much space to move to get the ratchet to work.
2. Won’t snap on stubborn bolts. You learn your lesson early about buying cheap and off-brand socket sets. There are frozen bolts I wouldn’t really want to test this on, but so far it does seem durable.
3. Nothing falls out of the case. Few things grind my gears worse than popping a case open, and there are drive sockets loose and falling out. I’d rather have to pry sockets out with something, than take a deep breath and have to stick them back where they belong one at a time.
4. Competitively priced. Not as pricey as Sunex. But not so low-priced that you expect it to be as garbage as those no-name cheapo socket sets you see at O’Reilly or Autozone.
Not to mention, it’s Black+Decker. It’s a name that everyone knows. It’s a name that everyone trusts when it comes to power tools (the batteries for cordless power tools, not so much). While you’d mostly associate Black+Decker with power tools, I’ve slowly started to become a fan of some of basic mechanical tools they’ve been putting out for auto repair. So give this set a shot, see if works for you as well as it’s worked for me so far.

This excellent little set is a perfect starter socket set for people needing both metric and SAE sockets. Comes with one 3/8 ratchet that actually surprised me because it’s very good quality for this type of a set. It has 72 teeth and a smooth operation that’s not too far off from my more expensive Gearwrench ratchets. Includes an adapter for 1/4 inch sockets since 20 of the 30 sockets are 1/4 inch drive. All sockets in this set are 6 point. A 1/4 hand driver is also included and while it’s not as nice as the ratchet, it’s ok and features a hard plastic handle, good for light duty work.
A 3/8 short extension is included and another very useful adapter is the 1/4 inch to hex adapter. It is not magnetic, but there is a wire type spring inside that holds hex bits in place. This is a very useful tool to use hex bits with any 1/4 inch ratchet or driver. It’s not always common to see screwdriver bits and adapter included in a socket set like this but I appreciate the addition, even if it’s just to advertise a 40 piece set instead of a 33 piece set. The bits are standard quality bits that are fine for manual use, I wouldn’t use them on an impact tool but they should last a while if used with hand tools. 3 phillips and 3 slotted bits are included. If your vehicle uses a lot of Torx bits, those are easy to purchase and add to this set.
This set comes in a nice blow molded case with locking latches. Great to throw in the back of your car or just have on a shelf for minor auto repair or home projects. This set is made in Taiwan but the quality is a lot better than I was expecting. Black and Decker is considered an entry level brand but they do make some decent stuff sometimes and this is one of the nicer tool sets I’ve seen from them. I’m using this as a home socket set so I don’t have to go to the garage anytime I need a socket set for something in the house, which seems to happen a lot in my older home. Great set, no major complaints. I guess the 1/4 inch drive handle seems sort of cheap but that’s about it.

– Fit and finish are good (minus a few fingerprints)
– Build quality feels solid
Meh:
– A longer extension bar would be nice
Cons:
– Smaller sockets (all the ¼” drive sockets) and the adapters are difficult to pull out of the case by hand, needing to be pried/popped out with something like the extension bar or driver handle.
– While not as bad as the sockets, the driver handle could be a bit easier to get out. As is, I can squeeze juuust enough finger under it to lift it out.
Tips:
– Note that the button on the back of the ratchet needs to be pressed when removing AND ATTACHING something to it. Hadn’t used nor seen one with that feature before, so I spent a few minutes thinking I had a defective one before figuring out why nothing would connect to the ratchet.
– If you flip the screwdriver bits, they’ll be easier to get out of the case, and you’ll be lifting the rubber holder instead of poking yourself with the tips.
Note to the manufacturer: Might want to have the workers wear gloves after the polishing process so they don’t leave fingerprints on the chrome. My case was ziptied close, so I’m pretty sure it wasn’t due to being used.
