Picked this up for labelling industrial and R/D wire harnesses and systems we build. A lot of it tends to be aerospace, where lines are all white with heatshrink labels, or, very small runs, where getting things labelled means waiting for a tech.

I also build a lot of cable harnesses for motorsport on my own time, and dealing with an unlabeled mess is pure chaos. Brother’s equipment has done well by us in the past, and I happened to see Brother just released this model (announced May 8th as of this review).

It uses all the same Tze, Hse, etc cartridges of previous models, so if you have a large number of carts stowed away or use aftermarket, you’ll be fine.

New for these models is being able to link to a phone/tablet via Bluetooth (AFAIK these still retain PC linkage with PTouch Editor). For most simple stuff it’s easier to just use the QWERTY keyboard or built in functions, but the app is decent for customizing or oddball labels with things like custom images.

The printer also has the usual gamut of memory and database functions if your company is using a pre-existing list of things like barcodes and symbols.

This is a great labeler, working exactly as you’d expect from Brother.

I love the ease with which you can make cable wrap and cable flag labels, though I admit I still have difficulty getting the ends to overlap exactly to make a perfect flag.

The included carrying case is exceptional, allowing you to carry the labeler and accessories to job sites safely and well-protected and is reasonably rugged.

As others have noted, if you expect the labeler to be “hand held” you have HUGE hands, but it’s not that unwieldy.

My main issue is the battery charger. Brother claims the LED will shut off when the battery is fully charged, and that using one of their recommended chargers that should take “about three hours.”

In reality, even when plugged in when the battery shows as full on the display, the charger LED NEVER shuts off.

I’ve had the recommended Brother charger connected for over 24 hours, and the charging LED Is still lit.

The labeler’s display showed the battery was full when I started, and it still shows full now.

Brother Support told me to return a previous labeler as defective to Amazon for this behavior, and the new one operates in the exact same way.

It’s either an error in their documentation or they are making chargers that can’t tell when the battery is fully charged.

They must have found their hand models in the NBA, Iโ€™ve got larger than average hands, and this thing is comically large. Brother, how am I supposed to fit this in a toolbag, and anything else?

The included carrying case is also way oversized, if every tool case had this much wasted space in it, our vans would fill up pretty quick.

The โ€œpatch panel rulerโ€ advertised as included is a paper business card, not worth mentioning in the product details.

The mobile app is pretty glitchy.

All that said, Iโ€™m pretty happy with the purchase and will buy more.
