    These pumps are ridiculously bad. In case you think I am maligning a decent parts manufacturer because I slapped a pump into an old clapped out junker with crappy wiring or bad grounds or couldn’t figure out the oddball electrical connectors, no, that’s not the case–I did everything right, installed it below the tank far from the engine bay, used oversized wire, triple checked everything, making sure the grounds were excellent and the voltage at the pump was within spec and the ground was at 0.0 ohms, and still this pump lasted about an hour. I drove around the neighborhood, was pleased with the pressure (~4.5 PSI), but the next day started the car up and noticed the pump was a bit noisier than it had been the day before, and I could hear it clearly above the idling engine. Now the pressure was 6 PSI, and after about ten minutes it dropped off to less than 1PSI then down to zero and the car died at idle a minute later. I let everything cool off, checked and double checked everything, and restarted it. The same thing happened. I even measured the temperature of the pump, to make sure it wasn’t heating up. I repeated this process a few times, then removed it, put in another brand new identical pump I’d bought for a backup, and the second pump was even worse, making about 1 PSI. The car would starve for fuel at anything over idle. The second pump was quieter than the first, but still sounded “off,” not at all healthy. I can’t be sure, but I suspect Carter pulled the old trick of moving manufacturing overseas to a factory with inadequate quality control, and are simply getting people to buy these pumps based on familiarity and brand recognition because they are technically OEM for several models. I would be surprised if Carter are in business in five years if they keep building parts like this. I would use anything rather than one of these pumps again, Holley, Mr. Gasket, Facet, or even some no-name knockoff. This is the worst pump I have ever seen, worse than garbage because it almost sort of wants to work, and if you didn’t have a pressure gauge you’d be left scratching your head. FYI, I installed a Facet pump and everything works fine.

    Used this pump on a stroked 2.2 l Vw 16v Webber carbureted engine. Works great humms a lil noisy but once car is on cannot hear it. Great pressure for a low volume setup.

    I bought this pump to use as a lift pump for my 2001 LB7 Silverado Duramax.
    I haven’t fitted it yet, but have tested it.
    It pumps approximately 5 litres in 1 minute 4 seconds (see video) so is very close to the stated flow rate. It is self-priming, no reviews mentioned this, I tried to add a video, but Amazon only allows 1 video per review for whatever reason. I’m quite pleased with the above results, however, I also tried sucking fuel through it with another pump whilst this one was off and it didn’t like it at all, if the pump stops working for any reason, mechanical or electrical failure, the pump on the engine will likely not be able to suck it through and put unwanted strain on it, which could potentially stall the engine, I will try this theory when it’s fitted to the truck, but even so, it would be wise to carry a spare peice of fuel hose to replace the pump in an emergency. All told, I recommend this pump.

    Nice affordable option for replacing mechanical pumps on older engines that need help running on ethanol. Cold starts with a dry carb bowl are much easier than before. It is noisy though. That’s my only complaint.

    Update 24 sept 13: I finally got around to using the pump to transfer fuel from barrels to an aircraft. The 1.2 gpm flow rate is a bit leisurely for a 50 gallon transfer, but better control than the 30 gpm mess I experienced with pumps designed for truck-mounted tanks that have real gas-station hoses and nozzle.

    The pump came with two brass 3/8″ hose barbs that thread into the pump.

    The electrical connectors are just un-threaded studs, so you must use their proprietary push-on connectors, which are included with a retaining clip. Lose any of it and you are dead in the water.

    From various places on the web and the installation manual I found that the Carter P4070 pump specs are:

    Maximum Pressure (psi): 6 psi
    Inlet Size: 1/4 in. NPT

    There is an inlet screen built into the pump to keep out rocks and birds, but

    An inlet filter is mandatory to prevent damage and for warranty. Apparently the pump and motor flood with fuel for cooling, which makes it sensitive to contamination from water, rust and crud.

    The pump in the box weights exactly 3 lb.

    These universal rotary vane electric fuel pumps from Carter operate with leaded and unleaded gasoline, gasohol, and fuel boosters. (There is no mention of diesel, but Diesel blog members report great success using the P4070 as a lift pump from the tank to the high pressure fuel pump).

    They have an internal pressure-regulating valve, and feature free-flow fuel delivery. These pumps have no points to burn out, and no shaft seals to leak or deteriorate. Easy to install, these universal fuel pumps come with a complete installation package and instructions.

    Place pump at or near bottom of tank, and never more than 24″ above the tank

    An inlet filter is mandatory to prevent pump damage.

    An A-68301 pressure safety switch is recommended. Or an oil pressure cutoff switch to shut off the pump when the engine stops.

    Use a 404-500HP adjustable pressure regulator if reduced pressure is required

    The pump is noisy. Use rubber hose to connect to vehicle lines. A ‘quiet pack’ is also available to muffle the noise

    Use 3/8″ hose

    Use 14 gauge wire and 10 amp fuse

    I needed a fuel pump after an engine swap and bought this pump. It is working perfectly. The install was as expected. It has a good mount with rubber grommets, but is still a bit obvious when it is running which is sort of a good thing as the key is turned on, and then is not obtrusive with the engine running. It really does the job. I hope it has a long life which is too early to know at this point.

    Tengo un año usándola en mi camioneta chevrolet carburada con motor v8 7.4 L y estoy más que contento con ella. Puso fin a todos mis problemas con la bomba mecánica original, eliminó el problema de vapor lock que tenía al subir pendientes prolongadas y/o en condiciones de calor extremo. Además el flujo es constante y no por pulsos, lo que hace que el motor se sienta mucho más parejo y suave. Es cierto que es un poco ruidosa, pero no molesta y con el motor andando casi no se escucha. No necesita regulador de presión y proporcina un alto flujo ideal para motores de gran cilindraje. El arnes de cableado, si se instala correctamente, funciona bien y no se bota o safa, pero hay que meter empujar los hules con fuerza hasta el fondo, el hule de los capuchones es poco flexible pero al final con la fuerza suficiente, el hule cederá y entrará sobre las “bases blancas”, al final no olvide poner el clip para mayor seguridad. No use ningún tipo de sellador en las conexiones roscadas para las mangueras y no presentan fugas, pero para lograrlo deben ser apretadas con torque bastante considerable para que efectivamente queden estancas. Procure encender el auto por lo menos una ves al mes para evitar que la bomba se vacíe, en lo ideal debe permanecer permanentemente llena de combustible para evitar oxidación interna.

    In the product information it says ,it is a diesel pump, which led me to believe i ordered the wrong pump.
    I called the manufacturer (Carter) and i was told that it is in-fact a gasoline pump.
    That doesnt mean that it wont work with diesel fuel, but if it was for diesel only , you can not put gasoline through it.
    So it is a gasoline pump.
    Works excellent on my boat, in place of the diaphragm pump.
