This MASSIVE collection is nothing short of a cinematic cauldron of brilliance. Whether you’re a seasoned cinephile or just beginning your journey into the world of classic and contemporary masterpieces, CC40 is an unmissable gem that delivers both quality and quantity in spectacular fashion.

The only kind of person who would want to pour this much money into such a set would be someone who has bought criterions previous box set releases, like Ingmar Bermans Cinema and Essential Fellini, as well as World of Wong Kat Wai. I’m certainly one of those people and it comes across as somewhat inconsiderate that they should but movies in this release that have already been included in previous collections like “Persona,” “Cleo from 5 to 7,” “A Woman Under the Influence,” “In the Mood for Love,” “8 1/2.” And just around this time, they happen to put out a Repo Man 4k in a separate release, the blu ray edition of which is also featured in this collection (bad news for anyone wanting to buy both products).
Only redeeming quality is the nice packaging and sleek design.

In what ill universe would this – even rather extraordinary – list of films, even in Blu-ray, and even with the imprimatur of Criterion, in what sick world would anyone be able to charge over seven hundred dollars, even for this art? The Bergman collection, the Fellini set, all are at considerable discounts. The films here speak for themselves. No one will buy them without knowing them already. The earlier films that have been restored are easily more impressive than the late ones, and one can quibble about selection for ages, for certainly, they could have selected a broader set, with the inclusion of Fred Wiseman or Cassavetes or Monte Hellman or any number of startling American directors… Naturally, better films abound but that debate is near endless.

A fine box set celebrating Criterion Collection’s 40th anniversary. I got it on sale for 1/2 off which works out to $10 per film – each film is remastered and comes with extensive bonus features, which are always high quality and make specifically for Criterion. If you think it’s too expensive, easy, don’t buy it. But don’t rate the whole set poorly when you’re really getting quite a bargain.

Criterion is, as many have said the “gold standard”of quality world cinema DVD releasers, but one has to ask what is the purpose of this massive & massively priced arbitrary selection from their 1200+ titles? The vast majority of us have a huge selection of Criterion titles already in our collection. Does Criterion really believe people are going to blow $4-500 on a grab bag? No one’s going to love all of these, you could easily make an argument for a completely different 40 title collection that’d be as good or better. So how many people are really going to want this behemoth? Save hundreds of dollars and just get the titles you really want. Now if Criterion ever released a complete, or nearly completebox set of Kurosawa’s film THAT would be a box worth double dipping for…
