I always wanted to play a Chelo but never did. I tried it today and it sounded good but I am just starting so I can’t really tell you more about it. I don’t know how much resin to put on the bow to really contact the strings with strength. For under 500$ I think it is good but I will find out. But for right now l I can say it is really beautiful and well made. The tuning pegs slip but I was told to put chalk on the tuning pegs. Wish I could tell you more. On the whole I am happy with it.

UPDATE 2: it’s been almost 2 years. The bow that came with it was junk so I bought a 100 dollar wooden bow. It broke. I got a 200 dollar carbon fiber bow and that did the trick. The fine tuners were hard to turn so I replaced it with a Whittner tail piece http://amzn.com/B000LIC4HS I put it on myself, but a music shop can do it for you. That was another good choice for only about 30 or 40 dollars.
My bridge was way too high, so had the it shaved down. Much easier to play. The bridge is not of great quality so it cracked a few months later… I got a hard case, and had the bridge replaced with adjustable feet for 75 dollars. I wish I had done that first. My cello rings so nicely now and is lovely to play. I did the work in stages and I made sure I would continue playing before I invested more. There is still a nasal tone to my cello compared to teacher’s warm rich tone, but I’ve started playing Bach preludes and it’s doing quite well 🙂 I’m happy. I would’ve never started playing if I had to spend 6 or 7 hundred dollars up front.
I just bought a Cecelio electric cello this past weekend and the first thing I’m going to do is replace the bridge and the tailpiece and get some decent strings. Maybe Dominant strings for A D and G, and a Prim C string.
UPDATE 1: I’ve had this cello now for 3 months. I have had some issues with the bow. The wood changes some with the colder weather and it’s become harder to get the bow hair taut. (I always loosen the bow after playing to keep from warping) I’ve dremeled out a larger hole where the frog fits in so the bottom screw will tighten more. Unfortunately there’s now a hairline crack where I’ve been messing with it. It’s just a cheap bow, but it still works. My cello teacher also has the same cello (haha) but he hasn’t had any problems with his bow. I’m guessing it’s just hit and miss. Still a good buy though and I’m quite happy with my purchase.

For a cheap cello I’m impressed! I got metallic black. I was worried the metallic finish would look like shimmery lipgloss, but the effect is subtle.
As others have noted, the bridge is not set up. I found a youtube video online that helped. Bridges are never glued down, by the way, they’re held in place by the string tension.
The strings were ok but they were a little hard on my uncalloused fingers (I need to play more). My cello teacher recommended buying a set of softer Merano strings (~$10) and that helped. A really nice set of strings can make a lot of difference in your sound, but I’m a beginner so the Merano are good for now.
My bow wasn’t warped at all. It does the job just fine. It’s a little hard to get new rosin started. I always scratch the surface of the rosin to get it going faster.
I also looked inside to make sure the sound post was upright and in place (it’s a small wooden post – you can see it looking through the “f” holes) Mine was fine. Phew.
My package came with 2 stands… how odd.
I’m really happy with my purchase. I think I got a great deal and the sound quality is on target for me as a beginner.

Sound post is not installed but that’s how they transport cellos and you can install it for $20.

Let me start with this….DO YOUR HOMEWORK 1ST !
I am a beginning cello student with a former background as a classically trained flautist and am fairly
comfortable with the idea…you get what you pay for..
I did not expect the cello to be of symphony caliber…what I did expect is that Amazon’s advertising, would correctly
and adequately represent the purchase.
Upon receiving…advertised bow and stand were missing ( no biggie, call and get replacements ).
The bridge is not attached (standard for shipping) you therefore must get a luthier or competent
repair/set-up specialist to service instrument ( which I did ).
I was told.. In order to make this a playable cello, I would need to:
A) Have nut rescored and shaven
B) Have new, higher ( unsupplied ) bridge replacement
C) The fingerboard needed reshaping and he could not do because it was too thin and painted (not rosewood, as advertised)
Reshaping was necessary to learn proper note placement, otherwise everything would be a ‘fret’ too sharp from
straining to press down string……very sore. calloused fingers and NO joy in playing= instrument collecting
dust in corner from unuse. Bowing would also be effected
D) Have the body/tonal(treble)pin and bass pin repositioned.
E) Advertised solid spruce top is nothing more than plywood with a spruce veneer…not much could be done about
this and I was told it would severely effect sound.
In all a 350$ job. Add this to the 234$..you’ve just spent, well you get the picture. As I see it I had 2 choices:
A)Suck it up, spend the money and I would have had a still less than so-so acceptable cello that was cheaper
than a quality entry level instrument.
OR
B)Spend the money on the quality entry level instrument that would well serve me into intermediate/advanced beginner
levels, and still have a fine instrument to resell or pass down. ( Let me state that I am a beginning adult player)
Amazon’s misleading print about this instrument has cost me time, money, frustrations and delays…People, please keep …this is mind ‘ YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR ‘ you will never find a new cello with rosewood/ebony fingerboards and tuners for less than 800-1000$. Unpainted, hardwood fingerboards are relatively necessary if you need to
fine tune instrument ,from a bowing and action perspective (mentioned above).
If you are an adult or child that really,really, really loves music, who believes they have the ability to learn and
wants to put in the time practicing and not end up hating the instrument…do yourself the favor of doing your homework….Save and research. Thanks.

This cello came fully packed with everything you need to have as a beginner. It comes in a case that includes 4 brand new replacement strings in addition to the ones already on the instrument, the bridge, bow, rosin and the stand. The stand itself is not the best quality but it works for now. My instructor adjusted all the strings and pegs, and put in the bridge which is slightly high causing more spacing between the string and the actual cello so when you play you really have to push down hard on those strings.. for a petite woman like myself this will be challenging at first while I build up strength in my hand. The color is just absolutely gorgeous, is a deep dark purple that shines and sparkles under a bright light. Overall the sound is good too. The only thing I will have to do to make it better is get quality strings, and shave off the bridge a little to bring it down some. I love this cello, totally worth the money and is suitable for a beginner.
