I have owned many Chapin products over the years. I own 4 of their pump sprayers of various sorts, great products. I was looking for a hose reel for a deck area. I searched and found this Chapin…sure! Have not let me down yet, I’ll give it a go! Well made, easy to install, (mine went right into a deck fascia). Hose is not as big of diameter as my others, but it works very well, never wanting for more water. Pull out the hose, just let it back easy, it locks right where you need it. When done, just give the hose a little tug and walk back to the reel, it winds right back up. I have not used all of the 65 feet I think it comes with, but I am very pleased with this hose reel.

I’ve wanted a hose reel for some time now and couldn’t wait to get my new Chapin 65′ Hose Reel. I’m replacing a container near the faucet because it is irritating to wind the hose into. Also irritating is when I pull hose from the container, it twists or pinches or tips the container over. The Hose Reel has eliminated that! I installed the Reel on a post to elevate it and take advantage of the swivel feature which works very well. Even though the hose was 1/2” instead of 5/8” it hasn’t adversely affected my watering needs. I pulled the hose all the way across my yard until I thought it was done. Upon further inspection, I saw several more feet still coiled inside. You could easily pull out the hose before using it or just pull it out as you walk away. Here’s where it’s key to have a stable post or support to attach the reel to. When I was done, a simple tug on the hose and it started to recoil. Personally, I liked slowly feeding the hose into the reel, so it doesn’t abruptly hit the adjustable hose stop. I’m not sure I would consider the case ‘heavy duty’ but I don’t have anything to compare it to. I was happy with the spray nozzle and all its options. No connections leaked from the brass connectors. It would have been nice to include the quick connect hose accessory even if the price was increased a bit. The cost of the Hose Reel was very competitive and even less expensive than others I saw. It’s a good hose reel for the price and I’m glad I got it.

This hose reel works great. It seems very durable. I did just buy it.
When mounting, the anchors and screws are perfect except the instructions say to use a 10mm mason drill bit. Here in USA , I have used mm tools for years and have never run into a mm in mason bits. After doing a search, A 10mm is a little larger than a 3/8 masonry bit.
I also added washers to the screws to help secure the wall mount to the wall. Yes, I would rather do more to secure it to the wall.
For some stupid reason I cannot post any pics to the review. Later I will restart my computer and try to edit the post.

Got it. Mounted it, which given my circumstances wasn’t easy and it cost around $20 in parts. But with the location and the 60+ foot included hose it let me get out to the street to wash cars. Once, maybe twice. Kind of felt like I was pushing the limits even though I got no longer than 50 feet out. Then one day i was watering the lawn some, oh, 20-25 feet out. All of the sudden I heard a bang and clack, clack, clack… The retraction mechanism broke. So now I had in essence, a round box with 25 feet of hose sticking out that couldn’t be inserted. Lasted in essence 10 days with 2 pulls that were over 30 feet, neither of which were to the limit. I returned it and am now looking for a replacement, different brand of course.
And washing the car I did notice the difference in flow/pressure thru the 1/2″ hose rather than the 5/8 or whatever I’ve had for 20 years. Not a deal killer by itself, but definitely a step down.

I have a Gardena 100 ft auto rewinding hose reel which cost me a lot about 7 years ago but I love it so much I was ready to buy another one for the back yard but it’s even more ridiculously expensive now. After searching on Amazon I found this relatively unpopular Chapin unit with very few reviews at the time but they were mostly positive so I decided to give it a try.
It has a smaller diameter hose compared the gardena and the plastics are cheaper feeling. The plastic wall mount and hinge pin seemed like a likely failure point but it was easy to install and so far holding up for about half a year.
The hose quality is ok it doesn’t kink super easily but it’s a cheap vinyl hose so I’m sure if you abuse it of course it will kink and maybe crease and then kink more etc. I just pull it out as much as I need and then put it away after it’s super easy and hasn’t kinked on me yet. The nozzle is very good so far we will see if it lasts. The winding mechanism is smooth and easy enough to trigger it to wind up and not trigger it by mistake, the experience is comparable to the gardena in respect to the mechanism which is impressive.
Overall for the price it’s great, if it even lasts a few years it will have been worth it.

There are some things I love about this retractable hose, and a few I’m not wild about. Here goes.
What’s great about it:
-It is a great space saver. Getting rid of the bulky hose reel box we had before felt great!
-Installation was easy AFTER we went to the hardware store for the RIGHT SIZE DRILL BIT. Take our advice, don’t even try to make it work with a different size, just go buy the one specified (10mm).
-The retractable feature is awesome! I can’t tell you how much I love not having to reel the hose back into the box or wind it around a hose stand or any other awkward, inconvenient hose storage method.
-The swivel feature is really useful for getting to all areas of the yard.
The not-so-great:
-The hose itself is not great. It is not a no-kink hose, not a hybrid hose or anything. So almost every time I use it I get a kink at some point, which is not only inconvenient, I also know those spots will be likely to get pin holes down the road.
-The nozzle is pretty much a throw away for me. It doesn’t shut off all the way, always a drizzle coming out of it, I’m not in love with the spray patterns.
-You need some muscle to pull the hose out of the mount. I had pictured just walking away from it nozzle in hand and the hose would lithely follow me. Instead, I usually pull out the length of hose I need, hand over hand, tug of war style, because if I just walk and pull as I go it’s just too tight and doesn’t go well.
All those things aside, I do actually really like and appreciate this hose. Some of the competition out there is very expensive compared to this one, which even though it has some issues is pretty value-priced and I think that’s a good trade off. I have my concerns about how long it will last, before the retractable feature goes out, but I really hope it’s a vey long time. I will now be too spoiled to use any other kind.

I absolutely love this thing! I’ve had it up for about 3 months or so and have used it nearly every day. I cannot say enough good things about it. Retracts so easily. It’s sturdy and the nozzle works well, good pressure and good options of spray pattern. Absolutely love it, think I will replace my other two hoses with these as well.

Red will sun fade to pink within a coupe months, broke one of the screws during install.
