Wonderful for one who is starting out in learning Navajo. The CD’s are a great way to perfect your pronunciation!
DUNCAN LETHAM –
I have never studied a native American language before, the cd’s and work book are well laid out and easy to follow, I cannot say I am fluent in Navajo, but I will work at it, maybe one day, my thanks to the seller.

This book is really helpful and it came in the mail a month earlier than expected which is nice. I am just finishing the introduction part since there is many words to memorize along with explaining how to say the words are practice examples. I already did two online classes which gave me random items on a daily basis but not much about forming sentences. I’ve briefly looked through the other lessons, a total of three separate cds, and it has most common phrases. There is counting, days of the week, family members, body parts, animals, colors, activities like studying or playing, sports, basic clothes. There are written lessons to figure out the way to say specific description of who or what the subject of conversation is but at the back of the book is the answers. So you can pick if you want to just memorize the context if it’s hard to find the root of the word. I would say it doesn’t include months or anything about Star constellation or a big variety of plant life and fruits or vegetables, but after I complete this book I will be ready for next level of difficulty. It’s more thorough with the letters in words and why it is that way this is very good.

This is a great workbook, and I highly recommend it if you’re interested in learning Diné Bizaad.
In my opinion, the pronunciation guide at the beginning is really useful. I worked through it methodically, pronouncing each exercise, listening to the tape, and then repeating the process. The tł’ sound is still tricky for me, but the exercises have really helped me to improve. While the grammar sections may not be the most practical, reading about the grammar has helped me to appreciate how ideas can be expressed in Diné Bizaad. That said, I think the workbook introduces too many grammar topics too quickly.
There are a few small issues with this book. First, the print quality isn’t the best. There are several pages where it’s difficult to tell whether there are tone and/or nasal markings on the letter. Second, I think some of the vocabulary introduced early on could be better chosen. For example, lesson 2 introduces the phrase “he is full of mischief” before we’ve learned how to count to ten or identify colors. Finally – and this is a really small point – I think the pronunciation guide CD would be much better if the narrator didn’t repeat the paragraphs of English explanation in addition to the Navajo text.
Overall, however, I think the pros greatly outweigh the cons. This workbook has been a huge help to me so far, so I’d definitely recommend it!

I will find this a useful book as I struggle to learn this difficult language. Apparently learning the grammar is very important in getting this right.

I’ve taken a Navajo language course in college and this book seems to instruct well
