Got mixed feeling coming across this set. First off, it’s nostalgia that bit me hard enough to order a set like this. Even if I don’t use it at all, going down the road, this is a trophy in my hallway until I die. I come from those days where I find Craftsman tools at a Sears department in a mall. I could spend hours browsing Craftsman tools over and over. Back in those days, they are the market indicators for innovation and quality standards. They just aren’t the same anymore. But I still embrace the brand. Even their Taiwanese made tools just aren’t that bad. It’s the made-in-China tools that scares me.
I wouldn’t call this a mechanics set at all, not even close. This set has some SAE sockets driven by 1/4 stubby ratchet driver. That’s nowhere near a fraction of what a real mechanic will need in their arsenal of tools. For home-use, maybe, but even so, every single tool offering is on the small side of the tool spectrum. I think the only time I can whip out this tool set is when I have to put some IKEA furniture together; even at that, combo wrenches are missing. The socket sizes are general but are limited to the smaller sizes. It’s just not all there. Anyway, still, for smaller tool offerings, this set has a lot of fillers, but even at that, these are good enough pieces where a driver is a solid driver, pliers are taught and wont’ bend over, and hammer actually stays in one piece after some hammer action. Not the worst, but not something I’d pay 50 bucks to get the set for.

Before a replacement set was requested, my title for this review was “They don’t make ‘em like they used to. ” The first set may have been a “Friday built” set. Or an “apprentice built” set when the master was out sick that week. The chrome plated sockets and some of the plated shafts of the other tools looked like they were tumbled in sharp sand. My 35 year old combination wrenches (“spanners” for readers across the pond) that have been banging around in a toolbox for many many auto, house and other random repairs through the years look better than that first “new” set of sockets. This second set is far superior in prep and plating, with no obvious flaws my eye could pick up. So maybe some Friday afternoon QC variability as well?
The eenie weeny so cute you wanna wrap it in a blankie and tuck it into bed 1/4” drive ratchet is a bit too small for a comfortable fit in my hand, but since most fasteners that small don’t require much torque to loosen or fasten them, it’s not that big a deal.
The surface defects of the first set wouldn’t have affected the useability of the tools, so if you’re less fussy about getting the full bang for your buck, it might not have been an issue for you. The set, like those of Craftsman tools of old, come with that famous old skool Lifetime Warranty, so in case something more serious beyond the visual aesthetics cause a failure, you can get a free replacement. Yay.
One really nice thing on these new sockets that is better than my older metric set is the very clearly deeply stamped/machines size on each socket. No squinting to see what you just grabbed. They could fairly easily be painted to make them even easier to read.
