So… In rating this product I had to go by the following criteria.

    1) Functionality.
    2) Appearance.
    3) Features.
    4) Cost.

As far as most of my criteria, I would have to rate it at a full 5 stars. It functions great. The card does what it is supposed to, and does well more than what I actually need it to do. The sound quality is wonderful, at least for my untrained ears.

Appearance wise, it is also quite well put together. I like how the whole card is shrouded as to prevent any physical interference with any of the on-board components. The front head unit is also decently designed. I did have a problem putting it into my case because of a minor clearance issue that has to do with the faceplate of the head unit. To fix the problem I had to polish down the faceplate a little as it was .15mm larger than what it should have been in the vertical direction.

As for Features… I feel like the mic that comes with the card is quite sufficient in collecting sound, though, some people would probably rather get an aftermarket mic, especially those to whom sound quality is a requirement. For me, the mic is more than sufficient for web chatting using Ventrilo, Skype, teamspeak, or any other various voice software. The Software that comes with it is great for the most part. I have yet to get the Crystal Voice software to work properly with my voice, apparently either my mic is too far away from my mouth, or the software just doesn’t like me, but whatever the case, I don’t use it because it fails to meet my expectations.

The biggest concern I would have with this card is the price. It is quite pricy, though you can get lesser models for less money, they lesser models don’t have the capability of the front head unit, in which in my application I required the head unit. The head unit is also not capable of being purchased after the fact for any of the lesser models because the connector leads are not even soldered onto the board.

If I were to have the ability to change something about this card it would be, make the lower entry level cards capable of future expansion with the head unit. It makes no sense that the cards are virtually identical in their capabilities, just by looking at their spec sheets, but this is the only version that can have a head unit attached to it. I know its probably a marketing ploy, but how much better of a marketing ploy would it be if you sold the lower end units with the expansion capability, and just sold this bundled version at a lower cost than would be the components separate. I know many folks that would like the whole thing, but would only be able to pay for it if the components were separate.

anyhow, those are my thoughts about the product. I had to dock it a star because of cost and lack of functionality of the crystal voice software, as well as with the head unit needing to be modified before it would fit in the standard 5.25″ slot of my PC.

    Great product.
Easy to install and hook together.
Software could have had more to it though.
I know it is a game specific board but a few extras would have been a bonus.
    Sounds really good.
Would have been 100% in my books if it had connectivity to a 7.1 speaker system.
I have a Creative 7.1 system that does not function with the board. 5.1 is the max.
Overall I’m satsified. Will feel better once I get a new 5.1 speaker system installed.

First let me say I’ve been building systems for 20+ years, and have been using Sound Blaster products since day one. I have had all of the latest, including soundcards from other brands. IF you want to use this with high end headphones – stop right here and buy an Asus Xonar or something else. IF you want a fantastic sounding card that is going to be used primarily for gaming, then this is a great product. Some will say the X-fi cards are better…maybe…but sound is such a subjective thing that I couldn’t possibly tell you what works best for you. For me, I’m using Polk floor standing speakers, a Martin Logan Vignette center channel, Mirage 10″ Powered sub and Mirage wall mounted rears on an Onkyo 7.1 receiver using all Audio-quest cabling. I used to sell high-end home audio equipment so let me describe it’s sound qualities:

I use this for music listening and gaming, and this sound card is miles ahead of the Realtek onboard on my Rampage IV Extreme. It has a very warm tonal quality to it, but excellent channel separation. Some may think it’s too warm, but you can adjust the tonal balance using the included software. They say it can drive up to 600ohm headphones, and it had no problems driving my Sennheisers. However, you will notice it does not have 1/4 jacks so like I said, buy something with replaceable Op-Amps if you want a true “audiophile” soundcard. Personally, I couldn’t tell you if there is a huge difference.

I will say this software is the BEST that Creative has packaged in years. Don’t bother looking online, you need to use the CD drivers as they are the only ones you can get. As of this writing there are none online. The included beam-forming microphone works amazingly well with the Crystalvoice software options. I had music playing and tested it using X-fire on max bit-rate, and my friend could barely hear the music. It has fun voice effects too, and adjustable noise canceling features.

Back to the software…this soundcard was instantly detected and worked on my first boot into Win7. Impressive! Plus this processor is the first new Audio silicon in many years. I believe it. It’s well built, does exactly what it says and sounds fantastic!
