I happened to stumble on this set’s advertisement and was shocked to find only one person saw fit to rate this set for potential buyers.
BUY THIS SET IF YOU CAN – EVERY BOOK IS GREAT
Before I had to switch to ebooks on my iPad because of eyesight issues, I bought and read everyone of these in hardcopy and consider it one of the best purchases I have made. I have since passed all the volumes to my son-in-law so that someone else might enjoy the set.
I was surprised by how much I learned and enjoyed in each volume, even though each so averaging 2″ thick. I would finish one after a couple of months (evenings and weekends) only to go back to Amazon for another. I read them more or less sequentially so they basically hooked the storyline from the end of one to the start of the next. But with different authors that is not an easy thing to do.
Other than Daniel Boorstin’s 3 volume set on Early America which read previously and considered superior, I would definitely recommend any of this set to anyone looking to track the development of the American Experience.
Too bad they didn’t have 6 star ratings…

This is the place to start and end any search for accurate, scholastically-informed, well-written history of the United States of America. Every book in this group has won writing awards. Three volumes won the Pulitzer Prize and another four were finalists.
The series is chronological except for one thematic book, FROM COLONY TO SUPERPOWER which concerns foreign relations over the life of the country.
Two related books by authors in this series are worth considering as substitutes (or in addition) to this series.
(1) First, THE RADICALISM OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION by the author of EMPIRE OF LIBERTY, Gordon Wood. This book won the Pulitzer Prize and covers the time immediately before and after the revolution, primarily before. It is a personal favorite for bringing a spotlight on how differently people thought and lived in that time so long ago.
(2) The second related book is called OVER HERE, written by the author of FREEDOM FROM FEAR (Depression & World War 2). This book was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and deals with the impact the First World War had on the United States domestically. This is a personal favorite. In my opinion this should have been in the series as the First World War was the moment the USA supplanted Great Britain as the world’s Greatest Power.
All of these books are available in Hardcover, Kindle, and Audible.
Enjoy all the books in the series plus the two that should have been included.

Other GREAT historical series to consider…
The Penguin European History Series… like this series but Europe; multiple authors.
The Story of Civilization by Will Durant… scope: Western Civilization; all time.
The Outline of History by H. G. Wells… one author but whole world and all time. Relatively concise.
All are available on Kindle and Audible.
Watch out for a very poorly written world history by J. M. Roberts called, The History of the World.

I love this series — other reviewers are right, its the best overall history of the US available. But its missing a volume to cover the years between 1896 and 1929. The Progressive Era, the Expansion of US Imperialism, World War I, and the Roaring Twenties. An important period. The volume has been on promise for a decade and they can’t seem to deliver it. A real hole in an otherwise great series!

One of the goals of my life is to read the Oxford History of the United States series from start to finish. I have been saying this for over 20 years and I am not getting any younger. I own all the current volumes (except for the repeats) and have read some of them, but I would like to read the entire series from the first book to the last in order.
According to the article on the series in Wikipedia (google Oxford History of the United States) the series is missing three volumes:
The first: American Origins by Peter Mancall
The second: Imperial America by Fred Anderson
The eighth: Brand Name America: The Birth of the Modern United States, 1896–1929 by Bruce Schulman
The series currently ends with the Bush/Gore Election in 2000 with several honorable mentions afterward to 2005 in the Restless Giant and 2007 in From Colony to Superpower. I think there have been enough substantial events since the end of those volumes that would justify another book despite the fears of historians regarding whether they are writing history or current events.
I have read four of the volumes of the series and they are excellent. I have been holding off on the remaining books with the hopes of reading the entire series from start to finish. Mr. Kennedy, (series editor) I feel the cool winds of mortality blowing on my neck and still the promised volumes remain missing. Please get the remaining volumes published and consider a new volume to cover the two decades of the 21st century.
