This router offers fast Wifi6/AX speeds and broadcasts a solid signal throughout our 2-story/2700sqft house. Unfortunately, the router setup must be done using an app; this makes pre-configuration impossible since the router requires a WAN connection early in the setup process. As a result, Iโ€™m using this as an Access Point to add Wifi6 to my aging Wireless-N mesh network.

    UNBOXING
This router is typical size (roughly 8.25โ€ wide x 6.5โ€ deep x 2.75โ€ tall) but the integral antennas make the overall profile more compact than other routers Iโ€™ve used. On the back of the router is a 2.5Gbps Internet port, four gigabit LAN ports, the power input connector, and switches for LED on/off, power on/off, WPS, and reset. On the front of the router is a single LED that indicates status with varying colours/pulsing. The bottom has two slotted holes to allow mounting (screws not included). An external power supply is included with a 45โ€ long cord, and a short LAN cord to connect to your cable/DSL modem.

    SET UP
Set up of the router requires the Aquila Pro AI app on a phone; unlike other routers, there is no IP address listed on the router. After downloading the app, you scan the QR code on the router, then can choose to set it up as a Router or an Access Point. If you choose a Router, the first step requires plugging into a modem before you continue (problematic for me since I want to pre-configure to minimize server downtime). If selecting Access Point, clear instructions are provided โ€“ just be sure to not plug in the LAN cord until it tells you to.

    THE APP
The app works pretty well for basic information and wifi password sharing; for advanced settings, it directs you to a web-based IP address (only available after setup) that allows customization that Iโ€™d expect from a router.

    WIRELESS PERFORMANCE
To gauge performance, I used my Samsung S23 Ultra phone with two apps – Netgear Wifi Analytics (to view network properties) and Speedtest (to test actual usable speed of my ~500Mbps internet), and compared this router (in access point mode) to my existing Wireless-N mesh network of TP-Link EAP245s. Information below was taken with both access points roughly 10โ€™ from each other, and my phone roughly equally in between them:

    D-Link (this router): Speeds up to N @ 600Mbps, AC @ 1733 Mbps, AX @ 2402Mbps (Wifi Analytics)
Existing mesh network: Speeds up to N @ 450Mbps, AC @ 1300 Mbps (Wifi Analytics)

D-Link (this router): Actual internet speeds 478Mbps down / 30Mbps up
Existing mesh network: Actual internet speeds 342Mbps down / 28.6Mbps up

    POWER CONSUMPTION
When used as an access point, power consumption hovers around 9W based on readings from my TP-Link Energy Monitoring plug.

    MISCELLANEOUS
    – When set up as an access point, you can choose wireless or wired backhaul (choose wired for best performance). If you chose wired, you can use the 2.5Gbps โ€œInternetโ€ port for the uplink.
    – This router does not include any USB ports for media sharing

    OVERALL
This is a versatile router that can easily be used as an access point. While Iโ€™d prefer a more traditional setup, performance is good and the interface is easy to use.

This is a basic Wi-Fi router from D-Link that prioritizes aesthetics over all else, with a really unique stingray shaped design.

I appreciate what they were going for here, but I’m not sure that having this as a ‘statement piece’ is really that much more aesthetically pleasing than a plain white box would have been; it’s definitely better than the wacky gaming-focused routers with glowing red lights that look like something from a futuristic horror movie, but that’s a low bar to clear. Because of the design, you can only really wall mount it using the two holes on the bottom, and there’s no option to stand it up on end – that can make it difficult to tuck away and conceal on a shelf or office desk.

I’m used to having comprehensive configuration and troubleshooting settings in a modern router, and a lot of what I usually expect to see is just missing entirely on this one. It’s got all the basics, but compared to GL.iNet (the gold standard in this space) or even Asus or Netgear, this is super limited and offers pretty much the bare minimum. The UI is also a bit confusing and quirky – the high design of the physical router doesn’t extend to the admin pages.

Capability-wise, this has been performing fine so far in my home, up to its rated speeds. It’s a little frustrating that while it offers a 2.5G uplink port, there are no 2.5G LAN ports – it really makes me question what the point of offering that feature was if there’s no way to access the enhanced speed. Similarly, Wi-Fi is limited to Wi-Fi 6, at a time when 6E rollout is really starting to pick up interest.

If you like the unusual design and don’t have a lot of special requirements for your router, this could be a reasonable aesthetic choice that will certainly get the job done with a minimum of fuss. But if you ever actually use the admin settings on your router, if you want the fastest possible speeds or if you aren’t in love with the stingray shape, there are other options out there to consider, too.

My son convinced me to get this router as an upgrade to the free one we received from our internet provider. We live in a rural area (no cell service anywhere nearby), but are on a fiber optic line for internet…so we use a lot of bandwidth at my house when every is home, especially my son is deep in the gaming world. There was a notable increase in speeds when we installed the Aquila Pro.

I’m not a tech guy, but I know a good product. We’ve been using this router for 3.5 months now and don’t have a complaint about it. Stylish, fast, and exactly what we wanted. Looking to build a garage in the next year or so and will probably put another of these in there and run it meshed in.

Having been an IT tech, manager & director for 30+ yrs, I’ve used a lot of routers in business & personal networks. When D-Link introduced this router I hemmed & hawed for a couple of weeks until I saw it on Amazon for $139! MSRP $179 but $149 sale on D-Link.I decided to give to a try. Since I already had another brand 4 node mesh running about 50 devices, wired & wireless, I implemented the AQUILA PRO as my primary router & am running the mesh as a secondary network, I moved all my critical devices to the AQUILA PRO & left the majority on the mesh network Primarily cameras, lighting, & security system on old men. Ran a speed test om my Samsung TV, first on Ethernet connected to the old mesh Download speed was 96Mbps, Connected to the AQUILA PRO WiFi & download speed was now 126Mbps. Tested another Samsun in the guest room & it went from 120Mbps to 170Mbps. On the AQUILA PRO I have 4 4K TVs, a 27″ iMac, 2 17″ HP laptops, Canon printer, MyQ, Dell Inspiron laptop, 4 iPhones, iPad, WD MyCloud EX2 4TB NAS, & network response is much better. Significant improvement over the old mesh.
It doesn’t quite have all the features I like in my network equipment but for the price, get it today!
I found it better to use the Web interface for set up than the app.

I wrote this very bad review below based on the lack of connectivity in my house and about six hours on the cell with the ‘technical wizards employed by my Internet Provider (IP). The first one who pretended he couldn’t hear me after 2 hours assured me it was the router. The second one took me through a variety of tests and suggested that I get an ethernet set-up for my Chromebook, but it was probably the router and the set-up he recommended would allow me some access to the web. As he left the conversation, he said there was a chance that my modem (Vonage) could be having some issues also. I call back the third time and get a guy named Franklin. We were on this call just about three hours and he said it ight not be my router but just the modem. After a trillion ways to place the cables, the router registered. He also said until I get a new Vonage device, he could not be 100% sure. The new Vonage device was delivered ( without FEDEXE’S doorbell ring) three days later. Guess what, it was the modem. Two of the tech folks tried to sell me the IP’s version of VOIP communication. I have been with Vonage for 23 years and they are cheaper, so I have VOIP with them. The only inconvenience with this router is the light. It is like the light on top of the Luxor Hotel that interfered with airline pilots coming into and leaving Vegas. This router is firing, I might make and interstellar launch from the backyard. ๐Ÿ™‚ A word to the wise, do not always take the information from the tech folks at your IP becasue they might be uninterested, or perhaps have another agenda they have to execute. Everyone will not be Franklin from the panhandle of Texas! I was never so mislead and had to apologize so profusely based on expert advice. Again, my sincere apologies for leaving a bad review that was based on incorrect information! D-Link resumes its spot at the top of the list!

This WiFi 6 mesh router looks very modern, almost space age. The set up is quite straightforward with the app and connected easily to my iPhone. I currently have an M9 mesh with 3 pods and was hoping to integrate this into my system. Since they are two different brands it does not work, and I can only use this as a repeater. I did set it up as the main unit to test and compare and I found it very similar to the M9 both in range and speed. After doing multiple speed tests with both, I cannot say one is any faster than the other, so this one ranks up there with others. It does have WiFi 6 which mine does not have. I do like the way it looks and that it has 4 ethernet ports in the back to run wired connections such as to computers, printers or tv. If I was starting a system over again, this would be an ideal candidate, but that would now take an investment of 2 more units to cover the large area I have covered with the 3 deco units. If I did not have the multiple units already, this would be a good choice with a few extra features that mine does not have. It does have the ability to have a dedicated backhaul band, but only when the units are wired, whereas my deco does it wirelessly and with a distance of over 300โ€™ that is a feature that I would also need in this model.

Got this to compare with the cheaper M30 which used to replace the TP-Link. What a HUGE disappointment on this unit! First off, the price was double of the M30 but the range or speed were not even as far or strong as the M30 though it advertised so!!! To add insult to this, it works a total of 30 minutes and then it just shut off by itself and not to turn back on again! I thought TP-Link was not good, D-Link is worse!
