Burns CDs and DVDs just fine. I can make music CDs with it for file storage DVDs. I like optical storage, you see. Hard disks are fine but they crash. A properly stored DVD won’t.

My 17″ Dell Inspiron 2-in-1 has no drive, this one worked instantly, without any help from me. I had disks going back at least 20 yrs. Most all of them were readable. It worked fine on 9 out of 10 and I assume the others were never finalized after data storage so the couldn’t be read in today’s windows environments. Drive is small, light, convenient and does everything I needed. Worth the price for sure. I do recommend ordering a storage\travel case to store and keep it safe, especially if it’s going to travel. I don’t think it was built for the field.

I wanted a DVD player that I could connect to my laptop since it doesn’t have any media drives. I didn’t use the Cyberlink disc that came with it (because there are no media drives) but it wasn’t needed. I plugged the DVD player into one of the USB ports of my laptop and that was it — I popped in a DVD, opened my preferred media player, and everything worked fine. It played both the Region 1 and All Region DVDs I tried on it without any issues.

The player is very small and thin, which I love because it doesn’t take up much space but I feel like I have to be more careful so as not to break it. When inserting or removing a disc, I always use two hands: one hand to hold the tray steady (the player will move or tilt off the surface when I put the disc down if I don’t hold the tray, it weighs very little) and the other to place/remove the disc.

Recently I had a need for a DVD player for my laptop to play a few specific discs however with technology change, of course it did not have a built in optical drive. So I hit up amazon and picked out an external DVD/BD that claimed to be plug and play. But upon using it, there was no software to read discs and it would not work with the VLC software I already was familiar with and had installed. I returned it and went looking again.
I came across this external player that specifically advertised it came with software to read discs as well as to burn them. It was a bonus this Dell external would save me $$. It arrived quickly and sealed. Nearly flawless plug and play but it did require a little Googling during the software installation. I ran into trouble that Windows was blocking the installation requiring Administrator access regardless that I am the admin of my own computer. If you find you run into trouble installing the PowerDVD software that comes with this drive, try the following which was taken from the Microsoft Answers Community Forum:
    1. type “command prompt” into the search bar and then RIGHT click it to “Run as Administrator”.
    2. in the command prompt window type “net user administrator /active:yes” and it should follow with “The command completed successfully” message.
    3. from the Start window and your user profile, click it to change to the Administrator profile and wait for it to be set up.
    4. locate the setup.exe file for the software and install it.
    5. switch back to your original user profile from the Start window.
    6. to disable the Admin account access the Command Prompt with Admin rights and type “net user administrator /active:no” which will also be followed by the message “The command completed successfully”
This worked perfectly for me, and the software has had no issues reading the DVDs I placed in the drive. The drive initial disc spin up has a little bit of noise but then the drive quiets back down and is not noticeable during playback. Highly recommend this drive with its included PowerDVD software.

Easy to install, works perfectly with my Dell Inspiron 14 laptop. USB could be longer- it’s pretty short. Great external optical drive for the money.

It does the job and it does it well, a classic USB cd reader from Dell that delivers.
Easy to carry and easy to connect, not much else to ask.

This is a great external drive. It is one TB (which will take me approximately 176.8 year to get anywhere near full). Easy to use, no prior computer knowledge required. It is nice having the security of knowing your important documents/photos/whatever are safely and securely backed up.
Size is perfect. Very portable. I would recommend this to anyone.

This Dell external CD/DVD device works very well. I’ve used Dell computers and accessories for over 30 years and this was a good price. I used it to add some music from CDs to my music library and it worked great. I plan on taking it with me for travel as my newer laptop doesn’t have the CD/DVD drive (if I buy more music CDs I’ll be able to play them before I get home).

I bought this DVD drive after watching a video by Adam Taylor otherwise known as EposVox on YouTube discussing the importance and means of preserving data for the purpose of archiving. My main purpose for the usage of this drive is to backup copies of my PS2 games to ISO files which has worked flawlessly with IMGBURN (my writing software of choice) 🎮📀💻 If or when this drives eventually gives up the ghost on me I’ll definitely be purchasing another one in a heartbeat. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

For point of reference I use a laptop when it comes to creating backups with the following specifications:

    ASUS ROG Strix GL702V.
    CPU: Intel Core i7-6700 HQ
    RAM: 16GB
    GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060
    OS: Windows 10

I bought this DVD player so I could review documents that a bank sent to me on a CD and I figured I could also use it to view DVDs. It would have been nice if Dell had mentioned that I needed to download software from someone to permit me to view the DVDs; I only learned that after googling. I understand that I am technologically behind, but that simple bit of information would have helped. Especially since Dell did include a CD for Cyberlink Media Suite, without explanation or instructions, that I never did get to work. Every time I put in the Cyberlink disk I got a message telling me that an Administrator was blocking me from running the app. I’m the only user of this computer, so it would be nice to have some explanation of what to do here. But all’s well; I downloaded a VLC Media Player off the internet (recommended by some PC magazine I had heard of) and the DVD plays fine.
