I loved everything about this, except that it played one disc in ten; including brand new out of the plastic CDs. Returned.

You’d better not buy this! I used to own one in China, and that one is good. BUT the overall quality of DCD 50 isn’t good. There might be a problem playing certain CDs. For my first DCD 50 in America, it can’t read 6 of my CDs when I placed the DCD 50 horizontally. (All CDs can be played when I place the DCD 50 vertically) Then I ask for a replacement, and soon I got another DCD 50. Sadly, same problem also exists on it. I viewed others’ reviews in China, and many of them also have the same problem. NO PURCHASE, NO PAIN

My DCD-50 arrived today. Had it set up in about 10 minutes. Everything works perfectly. It would be nice if the buttons lit up but otherwise no complaints. Looking forward to years of service from a quality unit, unlike the Sony I had that lasted about a week.

I purchased my Denon DCD-50 from Amazon in September of 2017. I went with it because it is a unit of tidy appearance that would fit in the limited shelf space that I had. After some months I found that it would not play a significant number of (factory released) CD’s that I put in it. I was able to get it serviced under warranty and it worked fine upon getting it back. Some time has passed and now it plays any CD that I put in it, but it skips (a second or so each time) throughout whatever disc is in it.
Update 2020: I actually fixed this unit myself! I was going to put it in the trash and so I figured I had nothing to lose and I opened up the unit to see if there was anything obviously wrong. There was. A flat cable was loose in its connector. I reconnected it and the unit has worked flawlessly since. While I am happy with the unit now, I am bumping up the rating to only 3 (three) stars as I shouldn’t have had to have performed the repair.
Update 2022: Player will not eject all CDs. I remove the cover to manually help these along–obviously not acceptable performance.

I read a number of negative reviews about this player. Many said it was finicky about playing cds that worked fine in other players. Despite that, I thought I’d trust the Denon nameplate and bought one. Most expensive paperweight I ever bought. The unit I got failed to play a single cd. Vertical, horizontal, didn’t matter. It powered up, told you the total time of the cd loaded, and then steadfastly refused to play. Nothing. Played not a single cd. Wow, Denon. Really?!! Those negative reviews were spot on. It’s a dud.
