I started buying DeWalt tools a dozen years ago, after my first set of inexpensive drill/driver from another brand lasted about one year before the batteries just stopped charging. It was sad, because they weren’t used all that much, so I decided no more cheap sets, figured I’d read reviews and tool blogs and figure out what made more sense for me. DeWalt was more affordable of the higher quality options than Milwaukee or Makita, and it was what they were using on This Old House at the time, so I bought my first set in 2010, a drill and driver with a couple small batteries and charger.
Fast forward thirteen years, and those batteries still work great. I’ve expanded my arsenal of tools over the years, all DeWalt for the battery ones, and have not yet been disappointed. So when I needed an orbital sander, I just shopped around for price and landed here. I only needed the bare tool, have a few good batteries of different Ah, so this was a great buy compared to the hardware stores.
I started using it right away for the project I was en mid; it works really nicely, collects the dust in the little bag as much as it can, and runs like a trouper. It preferred the 4 Ah battery to the 2 Ah, in terms of run time, and I was just sanding 1x3s. It was comfortable to hold and use despite some gnarly carpal tunnel that I have developed, and didn’t bother me a bit to maneuver. I am a woman with medium sized hands (size 7 glove) that aren’t all that strong anymore, but I don’t have a problem handling these tools, for whatever reason.
Yeah, I’m biased toward the brand that has worked for me across many different tools (just bought a hammer drill for digging in the garden with an auger, and I love it), but the batteries I’ve had have been good so far, and this tool is designed well and works nicely without excessive vibration or bounce. It’s been very handy, and I’m no longer dreading the sanding part of my little projects around the house… which is saying something, because I used to hate that part!

This just works well. I like the long battery life. I use 4 or 5 amp hour batteries and the sanders lasts far past when I am ready to take a break. The dust collection is pretty efficient too. I have a DeWalt corded sander that I like but this cordless version is so much easier to use. No dragging a trailer that needs the deck sanded to where power is available, just put in a battery and go. It is built well and has survived several drops from about ten feet without issue. Also it leaves a good finish with none of the score marks some other sanders give you.

I had been wanting a cordless orbital sander for some time and always like the Dewalt brand. I purchased it without battery as I already have batteries for my drill, impact driver, and saw. This is a very easy device to use and if you have the right mix of sandpapers it does a great job. My first use was on a number of high end wood cutting boards that had seen a lot of use. I was able to sand out the deep knife grooves and restore the boards to a very smooth, workable finish, before applying oil and sealer. I like the variable speeds and quick change of the sandpaper. Next job is a fence railing!

I love this sander. I wish I had seen the ‘Project Farm” video first, but I read a ton of Amazon reviewd and took a shot with the Dewalt. I knew chances were high I would go with the Dewalt, as they got their hooks into me with some of their other cordless power tools. I paired this sander up with some 6Ah off-brand batteries I found on Amazon. Fantastic! I bought 2 for approximately $75. They come with a built in LED display and are 100% compatible with Dewalt tools and 20V chargers. Will they last as long sanding compared to using the Dewalt cells? I doubt it, but the savings allowed me to have 2 packs rotating so I was never stalled waiting for a fresh charge. I did try this sander with my old Dewalt 20V 2Ah battery packs and they did not give me any useful duration to sand the counters. I resurfaced a huge amount of butcher block counter tops that are on all sides of the kitchen. I could have use 40-60 grit sanding pads to remove the heavy coat of marine varnish, but the pads load up quickly and the varnish glazes over to form a air gap between the pad and the surface. I found a utility one-sided razor blade, scraped across the surface peals the old varnish with minimal effort. Two other tips: 1) buy the vacuum adapter to manage the dust, and 2) buy a big box of mixed grit sanding pads on Amazon so you can afford to keep a fresh pad with the right amount of teeth to do the job. I worn pad extends the time and drains the battery with no surface preparation (sanding) in exchange. The dust extractor when coupled to a vacuum is awesome. Very little dust covering the kitchen wares. I tried the included dust bag attachment without a vacuum and it works fairly well, better than other sanders I own. If you have a shop vac, buy the $11 adapter, you will be glad you did. Speaking of cost, this sander is on the high end of the price range. As demonstrated on Project Farm, this sander ranked close to or at the top of all of the brands tested. Easy to move around without getting tired. Controls are convenient and easy to adjust. Low vibration, no heat generated, noise was OK even when sanding inside. If you want a random orbital cordless hand sander and you can afford this model; if you follow the 2 tips, you will be very pleased with the decision and the results. There was some beautiful old butcher block underneath the varnish. Take your time and progress from 40-60 grit, to 80, 100,120 180, etc., through 400 minimum. You may not think the grit gradations are too small, but there is a visible difference in surface finish if the steps are large. I used 400 & 800 grit pads in between coats of urethane. I have received lots of compliments on the finished project. This sander earned a big portion of the praise.

very useful sanding tool. only downside is batteries dont last as long as i’d hoped and needed to buy more which is just more money. perfect for rural uses or where wall outlets are limited/dont exist. if you have wall power outlets and/or extension cables nearby i’d just buy a plugged-in sander
