Routing is superior to the native nav system that came with my car. It also is much better than Google Maps. Garmin lets me preview all the turns and roads it selects so I can avoid routes not suitable for motor vehicles. In a worst case scenario, this feature helps avoid “Death By GPS” as the National Park Service calls it. Locations can be stored in folders for easy recall and use. As an example, I have a folder of mountain bike trailheads. If you use Garmin Express for updates (I recommend it), it is very important to plug into a data transfer USB. For desktop computers, plug the cable into a USB port on the back. For laptops, try USB slots until you find one that works.

Let me start by saying I normally don’t purchase refurbished items but decided to take a chance.
I own an older Garmin that needed replacing with something newer and larger. The SD-86 has a ton of options and really like it can be used in portrait display mode. Display is great like all Garmin products and intuitive to setup and use.
Ok now the con:
For the first two weeks it worked with no issues then it started flaky problems when first turning on. Sometimes the displays locks the last address you selected to find even though only “View Map” function is selected with no way to clear it.
Next intermittent problem is huge errors in correct gps speed and elevation. Sometimes displays the elevation as -309 (below sea level) and half the vehicle speed. Only way to clear the erroneous readings and locked up address problems is cycling the power. Newest problem sometimes cycling the power, the display won’t turn on and requires several attempts to get it working. Probably why is was returned to Garmin as defective.
It’s still within the return window so will give it another week before returning. If I decide to return it, I’ll purchase a factory new unit.

Garmin has always been my first choice for automotive gps, and the Drive Smart series certainly raises the bar again. Excellent touch display, a wealth of traffic and POI features, map updates, traffic updates, and of course easy and accurate navigating. The Drive Smart 86 is a worthwhile upgrade from my Drive Smart 65 that it replaced. The larger screen is easier to see at a glance, plus you can have more useful information on the display at the same time. I got the refurbished unit. Aside from refurb packaging, it is impossble to tell from new. I use the 86 daily in my f-150 and even purchased a custom fit “fast track” dash bracket and mounting arm from TachForm (highly recommende!). If you do, ask about their special Garmin 22mm ball adapter required for the Drive Smart 86.

I usually use my phone for all navigation but I got this for family who prefer an actual gps or don’t use a smartphone. This one is great. A nice screen, easy to use and very easy to update.
My family had a few older Garmin GPSs but they would not be recognized by any of the three computers I have, meaning they couldn’t be updated. I have tried countless efforts and nothing. That’s what led to this purchase. It has the ability to update over wifi which is wonderful. No need for any computer hassle again. I was genuinely curious and plugged it into a computer for the fun of it and it was instantly detected unlike the other three. Blew my mind. I guess the upgrade was well worth it. I’d recommend.

I have an older Garmin that I was happy with so when I wanted one for my other car I bought this. It is large, 8 inches so you may have trouble finding a convenient and safe spot for it. It takes up a good bit of windshield view when mounted. I have ordered a beanbag type holder so it lays closer to the dashboard. I updated it and it connected to my old Garmin Express program so it was no hassle.

Glad to see Garmin now does not charge for updates, and you can run it through your sound system, very nice quality, easy to use, now as long as you get satellite 🛰️ you are getting to your destination

I bought this GPS when Toyota dropped Scout and didn’t add a replacement app. It fits below the main screen and is easy to see and hear the commands from the unit. the GPS acquires the satellites quickly and I have had no problems what so ever. I do not use the voice recognition or mobile app, so I did not rate those functions.

The gps itself works great. Its also very big, so normally i have radar or the music player also on the display along with the map.
Though i have noticed garmin has changed how the routing is done between my gps’es even though they are set to the same route settings.
But overall great product.
Just fyi to those that also use the app, the app sometimes can be quirky or might not like to work at all, but usually for me the app becomes a resource hog or battery hog, so be careful of that. (Though not always)
