When I first started using the DiscPainter, I was pretty happy. After printing about 50 discs, however, my joy turned sour. Circular white bands started appearing on the discs although I supposedly had plenty of ink left in the cartridge. Clean the inkjets? No change. Clean the inkjets again and again as Dymo support advised? Still no change. I swapped out the cartridge and while the white bands lessened, I ended up with puddles of wet black ink on all black portions of the image. After getting similar results with different ink cartridges, I finally sent the thing back to Dymo. I got it back roughly two weeks later. It printed okay for approximately 20 discs then started with the circular white bands again. When I sent it back to Dymo a second time, I made the mistake of buying a second DiscPainter so I could finish the project I was working on while the first printer was being repaired. My experience with the second printer was about the same as the first. It started off well but quickly began leaving circular white bands and/or puddled black ink on the discs. Instead of Dymo sending the first printer back to me for a second time, they just sent me a brand new one. Guess what? A few weeks after I started using printer #3, the white bands and puddled ink began appearing. I don’t even want to add up the number of ink cartridges I bought for these things at $34 a pop (at amazon) as I’d be too ashamed at the result. I don’t know if the problem was the printers or stale/defective ink cartridges but I wasn’t about to waste any more time or money trying to figure it out.
I ended up buying an Epson Artisan 810 on sale for $169. I also got a 710 for $129. The discs they print are absolutely beautiful and far exceed the quality of the Discpainter–even when it was on its best behavior. I’ve printed hundreds of them and everyone one has been perfect–with bright, sharp graphics and absolutely no imperfections. The discs print in easily 1/4 of the time it takes the DiscPainter to print one and since the Epsons replaced two older Laserjets, I had no issue with the Epsons’ footprints. I did, however, have to keep one Discpainter connected (and hidden behind the desk on the floor) so I can use its design software to bring up my Dymo designs (the software won’t launch without the printer connected). I simply export them to .jpg format and import them into Epson’s PrintCD software as a background and the resulting disc looks identical to what was SUPPOSED to print on the Dymo.
If you are prone to high blood pressure and profanity-laced tirades, avoid the DiscPainter!!!

I purchased the DYMO Discpainter 3 years ago. Once a year, I print (paint?) 75-80 copies of the graduation video I produce. Up until today, I LOVED my little discpainter, but suddenly, and for no reason I can think of, it stopped working correctly.
when you put a CD/DVD in to be printed, the mechanism does two things – pulls the CD/DVD back into the printing area, and starts it spinning just like is does inside your computer’s CD drive. Today, it stopped spinning. all I get is three little lines of colored ink.
I’ve never had a problem with clogged ink jets, pixilated pictures, or anything. I’ve found the software to be acceptable, and fairly intuitive, so overall, was very happy with this gadget.
However, as of today, I’m VERY VERY unhappy! There’s no place in the software that allows one to clean the ink jets. there’s no tech support FAQ about what to do if it stops spinning. nothing. the website is a joke, too. nothing mentioned at all about hardware failure. took me several tries to successfully get to the tech support page where I was finally able to submit my problem. I highly doubt I’ll get any answer. So now, 2 weeks before I have to have 80+ DVDs ready for my graduates, I’m left hanging. I refuse to use paper labels – they can really wreak havoc in home DVD players. This is NOT a good investment!

First the good news: The DiscPainter is super-easy to use. The DiscPainter software is head-and-shoulders better than any similar tool. Incredibly intuitive with all the bells and whistles I could want. Designing a label is actually fun. Then just pop in a disc and within a couple minutes you have a fully-printed CD/DVD ready to go. For ease of use, the DiscPainter is definitely the best I’ve ever used.
There’s only one drawback to the DiscPainter, but it’s a big one. The image quality stinks if you’re wanting to print something other than simple graphics. It only has a few (4?) ink colors, so it has to simulate other colors by dithering. For example, to get a skin tone, it lays down dots of different colors so that when viewed from a distance, they blend together to appear like skin (or whatever color it’s simulating).
Regular inkjet printers do the same thing. But, while the DiscPainter claims a resolution of 600 dots per inch (DPI) its dither pattern is much, much coarser, probably in the area of 100 DPI. So you end up with large blobs of color. You have to get 2-3 feet away for the dither pattern to blend into smoothness, at normal viewing distance it looks really bad. I was really psyched by the DiscPainter system until I pulled that first disc from the printer. Then I unplugged it, packed it up, and returned it to Amazon.
So, if you’re looking to just put text and some stripes on a disc, the DiscPainter is great! But for photos, it’s just not up to the task.
If Dymo every comes up with a DiscPainter that handles photos well, I’ll buy it in a heartbeat.
