I live in a two-story house with a basement, and I struggled with weak Wi-Fi signals throughout my home, despite trying different internet providers. The signal strength issues were likely due to the material of the walls blocking the signals.
Fed up with the consistently low signal, I decided to explore my options and concluded that the eero mesh system was the best solution. What appealed to me was the hassle-free setup that didn’t require drilling for additional Wi-Fi access points. Having watched numerous videos, I was convinced of its simplicity.
Here’s a step-by-step guide to setting up your eero mesh:
1. **Choose the Right Number of eero Devices:** Optimal performance is achieved with at least two eero devices. I selected an eero Pro for the living room and another for my bedroom. Note: you can mix and match different erro versions as they are all compatible with each other.
2. **Decide on Main Modem or Access Point:** Determine whether you want to use the eero as your main modem or as a Wi-Fi access point (essentially a secondary modem emitting strong signals). I chose the latter because my internet provider had already provided a free modem, and having an access point meant the Wi-Fi was right in my room.
3. **Set Up as Main Modem:** If you’re using eero as your main modem, simply plug the internet cable into the eero and jump to Step 7 to finish the setup.
4. **Set Up as Wi-Fi Access Point:** If you’ve opted for an additional Wi-Fi access point, you’ll need a CAT 7 Ethernet cable (similar to the internet cable). These cables are affordable and readily available on Amazon.
To avoid drilling, get a CAT 7 Ethernet cable long enough to connect the eero to the main modem. I went for a 15ft cable, dropped it down from my room’s window, and connected it to the main modem in the living room.
5. **Position the eero:** Take the eero to the location where you desire for strong internet signals and connect an end of the CAT 7 Ethernet cable to it.
6. **Connect to Main Modem:** Drop the other end of the cable from the window or guide it to where the main modem is located. Connect it to the Ethernet port on the modem and power on the modem then the eero.
7. **Download the eero App:** Install the eero app, follow the user-friendly instructions, and you’re done! The app will also guide you on setting up additional eero devices, for which you won’t need extra cables, as the initial eero provides them with robust signals.

I have to tell you that this was very easy to set up. I bought a refurbished model for $39 and received it the next day. I currently have an eero wireless device in the center of my house. I wanted to add an additional one above my garage in my game room so that access can be given around my pool. It was very easy to install. I just unplugged my offbrand router in my game room and plug this one in. The secret in the app is, the + Sign and then select add or replace eero device. They don’t tell you that this is the option you should select. As soon as I did, it installed itself and updated itself. I named it in the app as Garage and it worked perfectly. As I transitioned from the house to the outside, it follows me and I don’t skip a beat with wireless signal. I didn’t even have to place my password in the new device. It now sees both as one. I am a technical guy. I have a degree in computer engineering, and I have worked in IT for decades. So… would I recommend Eero? Yes, for non-technical people. Because to set one up, you don’t need to know technical details… Provided you’re “upgrading” an existing setup.
I have a current setup… DSL modem with internal router. I have an additional router for internal network, and this will supplement both (and eventually replace). And install is extremely simple. First, pick one of the “pucks” as your gateway. You will need to connect it to the router via the network cable. And connect the power with the included USB-C mini-powerbrick. Now download the Eero app on your smartphone (presumably, your phone already knew how to talk to your network), and it will do the rest. You can have it take over the existing network (which you can disconnect after it’s done), or you can give it a new network name and passphrase, and voila, another network.
Then setting up the new mesh node is as simple as walk to where you want it, make sure there’s power, plug in the other node and run the Eero setup again. It will know you have an existing network and connect the new node to it, extending the network.
Any internal updates, verifying speed, etc. are all handled automatically in the app.
The first attempt (getting the gateway node) did take a little while to get working. Somehow it keeps timing out, but a couple re-attempts and it worked just fine.
It’s not really any faster, but it seems to provide better Wifi coverage around the two-stories in my place.
Finding the technical details, like IP address, subnet, and stuff, requires digging through the Eero app. So technical people may be a little frustrated. But there is also a lot of power in the app, like assigning profiles to people / machines to track their internet usage, and start filtering them (parental controls, et al). If you really need it, you can get VPN service for extra cost, as well as other powers through Eero Plus subscription.
This is not the latest model, but but the older 802.11ac model, and it works fine. If you want the Wifi 6 or 6E you’ll need to pay more. But it’d work about the same (albeit, quite a bit faster).
Overall, Eero is a mesh wifi system for non-technical people who really likes the Amazon ecosystem. It will want to integrate with your Amazon login, and that may turn off some people. If you don’t mind that, it is very simple to setup and get working, and can be customized. Getting them refurbed means you get them at a lower cost, which, if you don’t need the latest and greatest, is just fine.
