Joey Dean –
Thoroughly enjoyed these little stories told with typical Alice enthusiasm and energy. I learned a lot about the various periods of history too because Alice has clearly done her research. An engaging read,

Ms. Loxton presents a well researched and enjoyable narrative exploring the lives of 18 of Britain’s most important historic figures in this engaging work. The approach she brings, looking at each figure in their 18th year, presents some as at the peak, others not quite finding their way at that age. The stories explore each figure from childhood to their death and ask the reader to evaluate them through the lens of themselves at the same age. I highly recommend this book to anyone who’s a fan of British history, is raising a teenager, or was ever a teenager themselves and recollects how they were at that age. Great job!

Absolutely terrific read. Incredible historical energy from Alice! Bursting with facts surrounding each of these 18-year-olds. Alice takes you back through history with a great fun approach, up-to-date language, and loads of interesting facts I’d never heard before. The traumas, parental/family loss and separation, often incredible personal danger and huge hurdles all (bar one) of these 18-year-olds had to contend with makes one marvel at their resilience and fortitude. By today’s standards, their ‘mental health’ would have been dire, but they didn’t have the luxury to know what that was, they all ‘got on’ with what life dealt them, rolled with the punches, grabbed opportunities, found ways around hurdles and made a success of their time in this world. I hope history will look back at this time and find many such young people. Should be a compulsory read at GCSE. Emma G.

Wonderful book have read one chapter so far right behind the scenes history when they were young.

Alice Loxton’s A History of Britain in 18 Young Lives is a totally new way of rendering history interesting. It’s a collection of mini biographies with an accent on the youth of 18 famous or otherwise representative individuals, through the centuries. The language is very modern, as befits a young author, which makes the subjects seem more alive and accessible to today’s readers. I thoroughly enjoyed this very entertaining and yet informative book!
