Sometimes, the most important message in a story is hidden in what has not been said. The story is about a religious Jewish family living in the US. The grandfather, as a young man, was saved by a Ukrainian family who, while risking their own lives, had hid him during the war. After liberation he expressed to them his gratitude and promised he was going to keep in touch and reward them, but he never did. Now an old man, he had a son and a grandson and kept insisting they should respect the 613 commandments of the Torah (se the article in Wikipedia) and constantly reminding his son to do it. He tried to discourage his son from going to Ukraine with the grandson to find the family that had saved his life, make amends and show his gratitude. The story has the traditional content of side plots, emotional reunion, happy good byes, etc.
However, after watching the movie, what you’re left with is the sad observation that this old man who obeyed all the 613 commandments, still showed he had no shame or decency.
The message goes beyond the Jewish religious obligations and concerns how we all behave in society.
We have laws intended to repair past wrongs requiring people to behave differently. They keep their mouths shut, avoid offensive language, behave politely, but in the end no law can compel them to be decent.

One of those movies that has it all a serious historically relevant plot, comedy, and tragedy/drama. Highly recommend this film, especially if you like more international movies, not just Hollywood blockbusters.

This movie is a well-kept secret and quirky treasure. “Everything is Illuminated” came out of nowhere and stole my heart. I liked it so much that I watched it all the way through a second time, less than a week after my first viewing – something I only do for exceptional movies, when there are so many other things to watch. Directed by Liev Schreiber, the movie came out in 2005, and is based on a book of the same name by Brooklyn-based author Jonathan Safran Foer. I found the movie after reading a non-fiction book on a totally different subject by Safran that knocked my socks off. I searched Amazon to see what else this creative genius had done, since his writing and his mind are exceptional. What struck me so much about Safran’s work was that he has a rare talent for luring us into very “difficult” subjects by disarming us with humor. I feel I needed to say that first, because otherwise, it would be almost impossible to explain that this is a Holocaust-related film that is both poignant and laugh-out-loud funny.
I cannot comment on differences between the novel and movie, as other reviewers have, because I stumbled across the movie without having read the book. But what Liev Schreiber has done with this story is so remarkable that any handwringing about its faithfulness to the novel might be irrelevant. Sometimes two minds are better than one, and this movie truly works. Let’s make that “soars” – this is not a workhorse translation of book to movie – it’s more of a collaborative metamorphosis. Indeed, the mind-meld between Safran and Schreiber to make this movie cannot have been less awkward than the movie-story’s collaboration between the two oddball main characters. (They share the stage so completely, that it’s not possible to say which is the real protagonist.) The story follows the “odd couple” of Elijah Wood as seriously near-sighted, urban Jewish vegetarian Jonathan—on a “heritage” tour to find evidence of the woman who saved his grandfather, and Eugene Hutz as “Alex,” the Ukrainian “premium dancer” who has to make ends meet by conducting tours for “rich Jews” who want to find their dead ancestors.
Much of the allure of this movie stems from the playful way it uses “translation” to make us crack up laughing while pondering the reasons why different cultures use language so differently. Since the narrator is the Ukrainian Alex, you hear that they are on a “seriously rigid search” for Jonathan’s family’s past. As you get into the swing of Alex’s translation, you will find yourself captivated by the ways that translation affects thought.
The dog in the movie is also a scene-stealer, and the dog’s namesake and personality are interesting highlights of the story.
I cannot end this review without also addressing the serious and tragic underpinnings for the story. As we watched the movie, my husband and I realized that the germ of the story may have come from the sad World War II events in the beleaguered Ukrainian town of Lviv. I did not hear the town’s name mentioned in the movie, but my husband spotted one train-station-related clue in the film scenery, suggesting that Lviv was an inspiration. (I won’t spoil it – see if you can find it.)
Approach this movie with an open mind – it does not fit in any typical film genre, and kudos to its makers for that. It has elements of such disparate genres that it would seem almost schizophrenic to use these “bins” to tag or categorize the movie. Imagine a file clerk, in the old days, who would have to decide how to file “Humor-Tragedy.” Or “Off-Beat Holocaust.” There are elements in the story, such as a tiny cottage in the middle of a hundred acres of sunflowers, that I can only categorize as “Magical Realism,” but the movie is very direct, not fanciful. All I can say is that everyone has heard the phrase “laugh so hard you cry.” Well, I come away from everything Jonathan Safran Foer is associated with thinking that I “cried so hard I laughed.” Oy, I know that sounds insane. Become familiar with Safran Foer’s work and you will know.

It seems to me that ever since I thought about wanting to write a series that would tell the story of a hero, intertwining with Ukraine’s history—even from before it was known as Ukraine, stretching back a thousand years to the present day—this film appeared in my life as if by fate. My goal was to help people today, in 2024, understand and learn more about Ukraine’s rich and complex past.

As an immigrant from Ukraine who hasn’t been in America for long, a person who loves history and is searching for her roots, encountering this film felt like a sign. Watching a film with Russian-speaking actors, partly filmed in the city where I was born, was a profound experience for me, especially as I try not to watch anything in Russian or Ukrainian to help myself adapt and remain focused on my new life here.
Like the protagonist Jonathan, who searches for tangled aspects of his family’s past, I have also been searching for pieces of my heritage, even going as far as doing genetic testing. The grandfather character in the film reminded me so much of my own grandfather, and it felt almost destined. This connection between the character and my family reinforced my desire to create a project dedicated to my grandfather’s memory and the history of Ukraine.
The film’s portrayal of Ukraine is somewhat exaggerated, with poverty shown in a way that doesn’t fully reflect reality, even in 2005. However, this artistic choice adds to the unique blend of drama, comedy, and historical storytelling, raising significant themes around family, memory, and identity. This message feels especially urgent today, as antisemitism resurges.

A significant part of the story in the film is the role of Alex’s grandfather, who serves as the translator for the protagonist Jonathan. As the narrative unfolds, it is revealed that Alex’s grandfather was secretly Jewish, a fact he had hidden throughout his life due to the deep fear and trauma of persecution. This fear was so overwhelming that he even demonstrated outward antisemitism to hide his true heritage. When this hidden part of his identity is finally uncovered, he is unable to bear the weight of the truth and ends up taking his own life. The film powerfully illustrates the impact of fear and discrimination, showing how his entire life was shaped by a desperate attempt to survive by concealing who he really was.

My family is Ukrainian, but despite not being Jewish, I still experienced the weight of Soviet-era antisemitism, especially in school. This discrimination was so pervasive that it affected not only Jewish families but others as well. Many Jewish families fled from the Soviet Union, especially from Odesa, to escape this oppression. Notable figures like Steven Spielberg, Sylvester Stallone, David Duchovny, Leonardo DiCaprio, have family origins in Odesa and Liev Schreiber (the director of Everything Is Illuminated, who has Ukrainian roots) and emigrated to America, seeking a safer and freer life.

I believe people should revisit this film and understand that the evil that once consumed Germany has now taken hold in Russia, and everything they are doing in Ukraine is a form of modern-day Nazism—an attempt to erase a nation, as Hitler once tried to do. Ukrainian land is rich, known as the breadbasket of many countries, with abundant resources and access to water. Like the Jewish people, Ukrainians have been forced to fight for their existence. I don’t know what forces bring this suffering upon certain nations, but both Jews and Ukrainians have endured greatly.

This film tells a story about people trying to forget a painful past while others seek to uncover their roots. I believe we all have a duty to understand and respect our heritage.

We must move forward without forgetting or disrespecting our past, keeping our loved ones safe and maintaining an inner light of awareness and goodness to distinguish good from evil.

I feel that this film resonates on a deeper level for those who understand both languages. Yes, antisemitism has existed and persists, and it may only grow. Russia would love to erase Ukraine’s history as the rightful heir of Kyivan Rus, but just as Hitler failed to erase Jewish heritage, Russians will fail to erase Ukrainian memory. Just as the Jewish people spread across the world and survived, so too will Ukrainians. One day, we will stand by our ancestors’ graves with a sense of justice, declaring that goodness and truth have prevailed, no matter how long it takes.

First of all, the music was hypnotic. Secondly, the humor was understated and fit perfectly with the topic. Finally, it is as memorable a film as any I have ever watched.

Great movie, hard to find, and at a decent price.
Be aware that this DVD is set to Europe Zone, not a big deal but it could be problematic for some people.
Worth the “trouble” though, and the delivery was swift, the DVD arrived from the UK much faster than I expected.
