Replaced my 45-+-year-old black-wrapped silver alloy core strings on my ’64 Hagstrom Bass perfectly, with lighter gauge easier play that, according to the selector settings for my pickups, can produce bright, plucky, crisp jazz to a very-near gut-string acoustic bass sound… No lack for Heavy Metal boom thump or sustain, either. Once they’re stretched in, they hold in tune very well. The Black Nylon Coating thus far is very easy on the fingers, which is why I switched to them originally back in the early-70’s, and I’d be hard-pressed to notice much tonality difference between them and the standard brass round-wound strings. After all these years, my original strings were just too dull sounding, and no matter the setting of my controls, could only get a Heavy Metal sound with limited sustain. Why I didn’t make the change-out much sooner, was that I just wasn’t being called on much for Bass work, mostly playing Guitar. Now I’m playing Bass several times a month, as well as Guitar.

these are a very curious string. i have used them on a squier ebanol fretless p bass and a fender acoustic electric bass. in comparison to the the other tapewounds i have used..(ghs and d’adarrio) the fender on the p bass provide the most wonderful, tone-at-zero thumpy growl of any of the others. its like black-licorice mint or something…arresting, i cant stop thniking about the tone on them. by comparison these also have a shiny-er, glossy-er (slighty tackier) nylon layer than the ghs or d’adarrio..that have a dry feel to them. on this guitar the ghs and d’adarrio much more wah where the fenders provide brawahn. on the acoustic electric fender the fender strings with a bit of weather stripping in the bridge i get the nearest to upright bass sound that i have been able to get. woody and with air (and with extra bass scooped-out mids and reduced trebles from the amp) i can get near bill black, elvis-like bass lines with that desired plucky-band thwap depth and also close to a guitarron sound for latin lines. the ghs still had wah but the d’adarrios were close the the 9020s on teh acousti-electric . really neat strings in some applications.

Not the first time I have used Fender-Flats or Fender tape-wound flats (I have them on 2 other long scale basses: A Balaguer-Goliath bass and a Cort GB44). They feel great…they’re flats, lol. They also sound great and on the Rascal (which is much lower string-tension) they are very easy to fret/bend…even the E string.
I would definitely buy again as La Bella’ are SO expensive and I am getting the same vintage tone without breaking the bank. I’ve got La Bella DTB black tape-wounds on my USA G&L L2K and these Fender 9120′ feel the same.
Lastly, these are a set of long-scale strings on what is classed as a short scale bass. How come they fit, I hear you ask…..because they are strung thru’ the body (like a traditional Fender Mustang – not the PJ model), so the length from the ferrules to the E string tuning post is approx 34″.

Let me begin by saying that I am by no means a professional bass player, however, I have been player for a few years now and have made it a point to try out various strings; various metal rounds, flats and more recently, tapewounds. LaBella’s nylons felt way too smooth as did Rotosound’s nylon tapewounds. I more recently tried out Rotosound’s Nexus coated strings, and they felt more like rounds.
Even though Fender doesn’t seem to get a lot of love when it comes to their strings (people will throw out names like Rotosound, LaBella or Ernie Ball) I just absolutely love Fender’s tapewounds. They have just the right amount of texture. I’ve put them on both my fretted and fretless basses and love ’em.

I bought these bad boys a month ago and man, am I blown away! Ive got a Squier Vintage Modified Fretless bass (the one that resembles Jaco’s) which came with what I believe stock Fender strings. Those strings were okay, but I always felt something was missing. More along the bottom end, because the upper region was registering great tone. Once these came in, I immediately scrambled to put them on. Right out of the package, they had a great smooth feel to them. I did extensive research on these before i purchased them. People warned of its gauge size, and they were right. Upon installing them, I found that i had to sand the nut on my bass down. It was expected, and was a quick and easy fix. After stringing them up, I immediately noticed how much warmer the tone was. The upper register still sounded well, but the bottom end was booming! The feel was extremely smooth, almost like butter! Finger noise was non-existent, and considering how the string is made, bending was very, very easy. You can express yourself a lot more because of this. After a couple tonal changes, i found that you can dial in a great upright bass sound! With the neck pickup turned up, you can get a nice Jaco sound (not as good as his, but still pretty good!). Apparently these strings last a lifetime, so thats a plus! The flat nylon wrapping also saves your fretless fingerboard from the wear caused by roundwound strings. I cant speak for all non fretless players, but these sound great on a fretless. All in all I definitly recommend these to anyone trying out something new.

Corde in naylon nero, lucide all’apparenza ma satinate al tatto. Rispetto ad altre corde in nylon che ho provato (laBella black, laBella white, rotosound tru bass RS88LD) danno una grande scorrevolezza e una certa sensazione di tensione, che mi aiuta a gestire le dinamiche. Le altre mi sembrano tutte un po’ più morbide, per via del Nylon in superficie. Corde anche molto durevoli nel tempo.

I put these on a super cheap dean accoustic bass. I’ve always enjoyed the sound of this instrument but didn’t play it much because it is like wrestling an ox. These strings completely changed the way this bass plays. Easy, fast, smooth, responsive! I think the sound is ok in the room and I haven’t plugged it in yet, but I am now happy to pick it up because I don’t have to fight the instrument. Great choice!!

I prefer solid nylon strings but hate the price. I run these Fender 9120 bass nylon tape wound 58’s on several of my basses due to cost price point, sound and feel as I don’t have over a $1,000 budget for strings alone. They are not as smooth as solid bass nylons but far exceed the stock metal strings for me. YMMV but the 58’s are a great dollar for dollar value, excellent sound, quality, and smoother feel. The black strings look great on my collection as well. I always say it’s hard to beat anything Fender
