I bought this for my 2003 Mercedes SL500. Works as expected and I get all the codes that come up. It’s a lot better than the cheap scanners.
Works on my other cars just fine too (Ford, VW, Hyundai, Honda).

Foxwell allows you to buy the scanner with one loaded set EG in my case Benz. The second is not included with the unit and is 60$US.

This has to be one of the poorest designed units. Not to mention that the software is really problematic for your computer with the programs it unnecessarily loads, and then does not uninstall all of itself. In fact, on 3 systems tested, it left the majority program installed.
There are some usability issues:
you HAVE to have an internet connection to use the unit (software requires you to log into their website first) and get your data and updates. No thanks.
It installs Microsoft Edge- even if you have it disabled.
The data port on the side for a microxd card (required) is darn near impossible to use. You have to remove the rubber shock cover to get to it.
The software keeps wanting to use a different drive on my computer to try to write to and accessing the mem card on the unit requires that you disconnect any hardwired ethernet connections- it traffics a bunch of data needlessly over wireless.
With all of the privacy concerns regarding software out of China, they need to go the extra mile to make sure to be transparent, and make sure all software is uninstalled correctly. Some of these modules I have no idea why they are here. And 140megs software for this little device to operate? Very worrisome. And forcing you to give them your vehicle, VIN, street address, phone, purchase date, etc just to get in touch with tech support? No thank you. Im uninstalling, putting it on ebay for sale, and hope to recover some of the money.
The application for this is a 2008 GL550, and I needed it to perform the automatic adjustment on the airmatic suspension, which it could not do the auto feature- it overheats the pump after adjusting for 15-20mins. So, i set it manually- which worked but reveals it isnt able to communicate fully to the computer like the dealer module. So, still have to take it to the dealer to get it to adjust the last few mm needed. Its close enough to drive anyway. For that it did save a tow bill. But there is no way I would buy from this company again.

The scanner works great BUT how you interface with the internet needs a lot of clearing up! This is a particular model that uses “Foxassist” NOT “Foxscanner”. Downloading and installing “Foxscanner” is completely useless. If you want more vehicles added to the scanner you have to pay upfront with a PayPal account. After you pay with PayPal they make the additional software available (yet to be seen that is what I was told in an email). The only number given is a foriegn number that cannot be dialed regularly, so all comunications have been through email. NO 1800 number

I have several diesel Mercedes OM642-engine vehicles. Some of the codes can be exhausting to research, and vague OBD codes are of no value whatsoever with these vehicles. For years, I have had an MB iCarsoft II, and it was adequate. Until recently, it allowed you to view live data which was helpful. The MB iCarsoft II does not permit adaptations, however, and I needed a couple. At one point, I even purchased a XentryDas – but sold that after using it to reset an airbag light, and now regret selling it. Anyway, I recently had code 2624-001 appear, which is a vague MAF sensor drift code. The iCarsoft would clear it and it would immediately return. Purchased this, and did some adaptions to reset drift, new air filters, new fuel regulator, and reset MAF. Upon doing that, CEL finally went off and stayed off. This gets extra points for being able to add additional vehicles. The extra cars cost $60, which seems very reasonable to me.

I purchased this product specifically for my Mercedes-Benz SL 55 AMG which is equipped with a BC suspension. This is the only unit I could find that not only can see into all subsystems of my car, but could also see into and diagnose the suspension system. This includes being able to run the infamous rodeo test. This unit can do that test. Well worth the money, easy to use, down to the individual code level for each individual sensor in each individual sub system. If you own a Mercedes and want to diagnose your carโฆ.. By this unit you will not be disappointed.

Where do I start? The software for this scanner is terrible. The support is terrible. I’m a 25+ yr IT veteran.
The company and its software is based in China. You need to wander a couple of websites and download the FoxAssist software. It’s an .exe so Windows only, no Mac support. Once you install, you need to register online through the usual key email method. The software interface is basic and serves to update the scanner software. You need to remove the microSD card from the scanner (buried in the side of the scanner) and then connect the microSD card to a small USB card reader they provide. They also provide a USB to micro cable but then tell you not to use it. Once you insert the microSD card and load FoxAssist, you can update the components. It’s clunky to say the least. I updated my software and tried scanner both my Mercedes vehicles. It doesn’t work on either. The scanner boots up, it does recognize my VIN, and then when I hit Enter, it freezes and hangs up. See picture. The vertical bars on the display reflect the fact that it is frozen. Hung. Unresponsive. I waited over 20min to see if it was actually processing, but it’s not. It’s hung.
I contacted all the Foxwell support lines. I did get responses a day later however they are on China time and poorly communicated. They suggested I update again. Which I did. Multiple times. I re-formatted the SD card. No luck. The FoxAssist software utility updates the Mercedes library fine each time and confirms with a success message. It still doesn’t work.
The generic OBDII scanning feature works. However – like everyone buying this crap scanner – I am looking for the specific Mercedes options. This portion DOES NOT WORK. The software is crap. Google search shows others having the same issue.
It’s probably hit and miss if this will work for you.
My advice after hours spent in frustration? Look elsewhere.

TL;DR – if you only need basic functionality you can get it cheaper, but I’m not aware of anything else that offers this much without paying hundreds more, so it’s the perfect middle ground for a home mechanic.
I repaired some damaged wires that were triggering an SRS error on my 2009 ML320 Bluetec, but the error message wouldn’t go away without being cleared. My cheap Bluetooth scanner only communicates with the engine module so wouldn’t do the trick. Unlike Autozone in the US, I’m not aware of places in Canada that will read/clear codes without any charge (officially or unofficially, as in “bring in donuts and ask them really nicely), so I was faced with the choice of paying someone to do it, bringing snacks and hoping for the best, or investing in something to clear the code myself.
I looked at other options that were less expensive but also less robust: many in the $70 range would clear an SRS code and communicate with 3 or 4 key modules, but this one (at about $250) would communicate with all modules, clear codes from any of them, and also do bi-directional testing.
There are two main reasons I decided to spend the extra $180 on this unit:
– First, the ability to communicate with all modules means that I can diagnose future issues whether they are engine, body, suspension, transmission or any other aspect of the car. I like to fix what I can on my car, and on stuff I can’t fix to at least know what does/doesn’t need to be done before I pay someone else. Now I’m equipped.
– Second, this is the only one I’m aware of in this price range that has the bi-directional capability. That means I can change things like how sensitive I want the system to be before it warns me that one of my tires is low, but more significantly it can trigger the systems to work for comprehensive testing (instead of just seeing if there are stored codes for my headlights, it can trigger them and analyze if they’re responding as expected). That means if a window won’t go down I should (haven’t tried it yet) be able to trigger it from the Foxwell and know right away if it’s a problem with the window motor or just the switch.
What do I like about it?
– It’s compact and doesn’t rely on Bluetooth to another phone/tablet/computer to work
– It has the Mercedes-specific error codes included free with purchase (installed during the device setup). You can purchase other manufacturers, or just use the OBDII functionality to get generic codes for occasional work on other brands
– It has a memory card included that can be used with the Foxwell app on a PC to review and print test results
– It managed to clear my SRS error as well as other stored errors related to the ECU, transmission, and audio system
– It’s hundreds less than most devices with the same level of bi-directional functionality
What’s not so great?
– The interface (screen, buttons…) feel about 15 years out of date. The lack of touchscreen isn’t a big deal for most actions, but is a bit of a pain when typing in the filename I want to use to save a report, for example
– The PC app is also relatively limited… I have to sign in every time I start if (even though I’ve checked the “remember me” box) and it triggers Windows UAC so I have to authorize it every time I start it up.
– There doesn’t seem to be much information in the report (just the error code and explanation text, without the date/time it was logged), but I haven’t tried the freeze frame functionality, so that may give me more of what I’m hoping for.
All of the “not so great” points are ones that other units address… but for hundreds of dollars more. I only plan to use this for my own car, so I’m willing to live with the limitations in order to get the great functionality at a very reasonable price. Just got it a couple of days ago so I can’t say anything about durability, but there isn’t anything about it that gives me any concerns about that. It’s done everything I bought it for, and should be able to handle anything I throw at it down the road, so even with docking it a bit for ease of use the price/performance equation more than makes up for it.
UPDATE: a year or so in, I’m deducting a star after discovering that the “all systems” this unit works with doesn’t include the Adblue (DEF) system. I recently had a sudden increase in DEF consumption (likely a leak somewhere) and even though I refilled the tank whenever prompted, I got a check engine light related to it… and not only is the Foxwell unable to clear the code, it can’t even pull it, so my scan says all clear but the CEL persists, and the car keeps going into limp mode. Frustrating, but it has been helpful with other issues.

Took a few minutes to figure out how to get it to auto recognize the vehicle (key needs to be in second ignition position, not the first). Once in the system, there is a lot of information in your car. Feature that attracted me to this unit was ability to toggle certain systems thru the unit: I.e. it lets you open and shut your Charcoal Cannister Valve/open shut Purge valve. I was willing to pay more than the simplest ($100) units because I wanted bidirectional control…this has that ability. Liked that this was specific to MB, and it worked great on my ML500 from 2002. I recognized some of the old codes that had been previously tripped and repaired, and it was able to help diagnosed my vacuum leak and clear the code. Paid for itself on the first use, as dealer wanted $200 to test/clear the code. My advise: don’t try to upload any new software, until you are very familiar with using the unit. The software my came with did all I needed it to do: the new update risked wiping the system (would be bad).
Update 2023: I have three MBs, this works on them all. 2002/2014/2012. Saves me hundreds of dollars. Get one.

Going through the functions and scans individually the scanner functioned as it should. The problem was when running an automated full scan. It would freeze when it got to checking the Tele-Aid components on my Mercedes W220 and never complete a full system report. Tried many things but it just kept getting stuck at that point. Shame cause I liked the little orange box.. Looks like I’ll be getting an SDS system over seas instead.

The scanner worked great although a more comprehensive manual on exactly how to perform various functions would be helpful. I found I had to figure some things out on my own . Still not sure of or if I can evacuate my old existing brake fluid and replace it as I just replaced my rotors, pads & sensors on my 2010 Mercedes S 550 4 Matic.
