Have been using fram filters for many years without any issues. Love the no-slip grip – this is the only filter I can unscrew without a tool, just by hand. Otherwise it’s a decent quality filter. Just change your oil regularly and use good quality oil.

Due to corporate acquisitions, formerly dependable brands like Wix, Napa and Bosch have shown major defects. Filters previously made in the USA may now be manufactured in China. The flaws have always been true for Fram’s cheapest orange-box version. Sadly, other brands have switched to that construction style.
Various testing organizations have found defects in filters that do not come from China including Purolator Boss, my previous favorite. I have not read of similar defects in this version of Fram.
Note that Fram makes filter versions that are even more premium than this one but they are twice as expensive and not yet stocked by Amazon. Those are the reasons I stop with this version.
Fram ultra-synthetic still uses multi-layer filter material and hard end-caps. Standardized testing has shown it to be the most efficient even up to 20,000 miles. It can hold more of the standardized particulate than almost all of the competition. Both efficiency and volume are at the expense of somewhat higher flow resistance.
Performance engines probably need lower flow resistance at the expense of more frequent oil changes but this Fram is my chosen compromise for daily drivers. I use them on my Subaru vehicles. Note that Subaru engines move a lot of oil which pushes many filters into bypass mode. I have not found that to be a problem as long as I use low-viscosity synthetic oil which I would use in any case.
Few oils are rated at 20,000 miles. I recollect some versions of Mobil 1 and one version from Walmart. Few filters are rated at 20,000 miles I recollect this one, Walmart and Purolator Boss. Read the fine print because Walmart can hold fewer grams of standardized particulate in total. Depending on both the part number and where it was actually manufactured, Purolator Boss only guarantees its filtration efficiency for 10,000 to 15,000 miles.

FRAM has always been my requested filter when I was taking my vehicles to an oil change facility. After 25 years of having someone else change my oil and filter, I decided to give it a go myself once again for several reasons. I wanted to add a special additive, LUCAS Oil Stabilizer, and just thought an oil change dealership would probably balk at measuring out the oil and stabilizer, plus with inflation raging as it has been for the past two years, I was looking for a way to save some money.
So finally, yesterday, I got my 70 plus year old bones down on some cardboard and gave it a go. The old filter took a bit of pressure but finally allowed me to turn it off, then after draining the oil from the pan, I went to work with the new FRAM filter. First I oiled the gasket, then cleaned any remaining oil from the engine base, and turned the new filter into the base. The suregrip of the FRAM made it extremely easy to apply just enough pressure to get it safely tight and I am sure it will make it easy to remove for the next oil change. After all the oil was drained, I cleaned and reinstalled the plug, then filled the engine with Quaker State Full Synthetic oil and an appropriate amount of LUCAS stabilizer.
I started the car, used a flashlight to look for any possible leaks, there were none, then I left the car run for about ten minutes, turned it off, checked the level, and it was perfect. Last, I used the flashlight again to check under the car and no leaks were observed. Although I was much stiffer than I was 25 years ago, I felt a sense of accomplishment and saving some money was also great.

Installed and working as expected. This is a highly rated item for oil filters so I expect no issues. Really like the grip area around the bottom to aid in tightening.

Firstly, this is incorrectly catalogued as an PH9688. It is an XG9688, very different spec! This is one of FRAM’s Ultra-Synthetic range of oil filters, and is without doubt one of the best oil filters on the market in 2021. Made in the USA, and the construction is solid. Some folk have old memories of some ‘not so good’ FRAM oil filters, but they do make a few different models, and that was quite a few years ago. These XG series filters have a non-slip coating on the end, which does make installing and removing a little easier, and a few manufacturers are doing the same. FRAM claims the filter is good for 20,000 miles (32,000Km’s), however you’d pretty much void the warranty on most cars if you left a filter on that long! The dirt holding capacity supports that claim, along with silicon anti-drainback valve, and bypass valve (in case of blockage). Any good filter will have those 2 valves, but some cheapies may not. The filter media is optimized for full synthetic oil, and synthetic oil is cheap enough on sale these days to not want to use anything else. You can use mineral oil, but that’s a waste of this filter’s capabilities. The XG Ultra-Synthetic filter is easily good for more than 10,000 miles or 15,000km’s, and will give protection if you forget to do an oil change for a bit, but oil is likely to break down if you push it too long, so follow manufacturer’s specs always, especially while your car is under warranty. These FRAM XG’s are a great filter at a great price, and I’m using them on 5 cars in the family with nil issues.
