If you are accustomed to heavy duty Ridgid chain wrenches, this will be a huge disappointment. This does not grab nearly as well. In comparison, it hardly grabs at all. The teeth are not aggressive & the jaw is not angled properly or curved at all, in a way for it to solidly take hold.
On the other hand, this will fit into places where no chain pipe wrench that has a handle will fit. Being the jaw is too straight, this tool is better for tearing something apart, rather than installing new pipe. Lacking an aggressive rounded jaw, a person is left forcing the leading edge of the jaw to make an indentation in the pipe. The force needed to be applied for it to grab, is not gentle on a pipe. Still, you need to be careful. The chain is not nearly as heavy as many chain pipe wrenches. For instance, I only use it with a 1/2″ ratchet. I would not expect it to survive, if I used my 24″ breaker bar. Even with a normal length ratchet, I have no confidence that I couldn’t snap it, if I used a lot of force. If seems fairly solid, but it is far from overbuilt.
If you can tolerate it slipping a lot, or simply keep it for when nothing else will fit, this is an okay tool & it is way cheaper than a Ridgid chain wrench. This is no substitute for a decent set of regular pipe wrenches. Personalty, I will use this as little as possible, but when I have something located where I cannot get to it with a regular pipe wrench, I’ll be happy I have it, even as its limitations frustrate me.
If you are just looking for something to grab a oil filter, yes it will do that. The oil filter will dent a little & this would grab well, but considering there are much cheaper chain devices for oil filters, this would be far more expensive than what is needed for oil filters.
Oh, it also rusts very easily, so keep it oiled.

I am glad to have found this product. Most of the other chain wrenches come with a Long heavy handle this one uses any half inch drive wrench to hold it in place. It easily fit a 3-inch galvanized coupling I needed to tighten. It can fit into my toolbox and I’ll have it when I need it. Compare this to a heavy two foot pipe wrench needed for 3 inch and you find the value also. Gearwrench is also a brand known for its quality so I recommend it. I don’t fit 3″ inch galvanized very often so I expect this to last my lifetime. Oh another advantage of this type wrench is that it will conform to any shape the chain will fit around. I only wish the chain was longer. Why not?

Works in some situations great others not so much would like lil more angle with the teeth so they get a better bite struggle with finding right angle to keep teeth wedged to start using compared to the old craftsman 18”.

I have a 2020 Chevrolet Silverado with the 6.6 Duramax diesel. I have changed the fuel filters several times but this time the socket slipped on the plastic nut on the filter housing. I ordered this gear wrench after watching other people trying to get other filters off. This one worked perfectly, no slipping just gripping. Everyone should have one for their filters. There was very limited access to the filter so I added a 1/2 inch drive extension so I could get it done.

1/2” Square hole does not feature internal notches for the ball detent of an extension bar, it’s just smooth inside. For the awkward sorts of places you need this thing to reach a bit more security would be nice. First link of chain is distorted, there’s some extra bushings in there or something and the outer plates are on an angle. That second joint is very stiff. Not sure what’s going on there but it doesn’t look right. Gripping jaws are painted over, finish of the whole thing is a bit crude.
I’m sure it will work but it’s not the sort of tool that’s a delight to own and use.
Primememeber –
It’s a chain wrench, minus the handle so you’ll need a 1/2″ breaker bar to use it. Adding an extension can let it reach right spots where a regular chain wrench can’t. Compact to store without the handle.

This is a rather unique project that I used this chain wrench on. I installed 2 barrel nuts on 2 heavy barreled AR10 gas guns. I didn’t have a wrench that fit my 2 different barrel nuts on 2 different guns with the large diameter barrels.. I ordered this and received it the next day. It worked great to torque the barrels to 65 ft. lbs. I did have to de-bur the barrel nuts and touch them up just a little. The clamp on handguard went on easily and both guns shoot perfectly. The tool did suffer some minor damage on the teeth as i expected. i touched them up a bit. These barrel nuts are hardened steel. Not exactly what this chain wrench was designed for. But it is ready to go for the next one, if there is one.
