Hurts your teeth and dries out your tongue –
So I’m a professional mechanic and when I saw this I sold my personal “launch” brand scanner that wanted yearly subscription for full access to some brands and it wasn’t even bi directional. I sold it for 100 in less than a day for this for 130 ! And it’s been amazing so far I’ve only used it on a few cars but I’m Soo impressed and if they really do stick to there words of life time updates u literally can’t beat this deal … It doesn’t have a scope or anything like that but that’s what the shop autel is for

This “DIY Dongle” scanner is a mixed bag:
– The mobile application
– Works fine on iOS, even though the product description doesn’t indicate such.
– The interface is easy to use and understand. Scans list the subject areas with a summary of the results, however…
– You can’t drill down into the specific areas. You have to view all of the codes at once.
– On the login screen, there isn’t an option to “create” an account. It simply asks you to enter a userid and password with a “forgotten” option. So it’s confusing in that it implies that you already have created the account. The answer is simply to enter the userid and password you want to use.
– The login screen does not interact with password managers
– It doesn’t appear to store history to be displayed later. So, for instance, I scan the vehicle and see 3 trouble codes. Turn off the car and later bring the app up on my phone. I can’t see the codes now. I first have to go back to the car, turn it on and scan again. That’s a needless shortcoming.
– There isn’t any additional information presented, such as common causes for a given code or links to an online reference.
– The dongle didn’t recognize my plain-jane 2012 Honda Odyssey. It made me manually enter the VIN. None of my scanners, even the old one from 10 years ago made me do that.
– Most importantly for me, none of the extended manufacturer-specific codes are included or even available to be purchased. This is a big deal, because it means that the only things the scanner will report are the base level OBE-II trouble codes. That’s leaving a treasure trove of diagnostic goodness off the table.
So, the bottom line for me is this: If you’re a beginner to scanners, this one is easy to use. But, it will only get you so far. All research on how to solve the problem is left to you to do on your own. Further, the lack of extended codes means that anything vendor-specific won’t be available to you — and ALL manufacturers have a set unique codes. So, while this is a good scanner for what it is, you may find that you outgrow it pretty quickly.

The tablet comes with a nice molded case that has foam-padded compartments for both the tablet and the other parts (charging cable and OBD2 dongle).
Setup was very easy – power on the tablet, connect to WiFi, connect to establish your account, run updates, plug in the dongle to the vehicle and wait for its indicator light to turn blue, and fire up the GearWrench software on the tablet.
There is a 3-year subscription service that starts the clock when you start the tablet for the first time. I ran all the updates within the main GearWrench app before plugging in the OBD2 dongle for the first time, which were 80 or so vehicle maker diagnostic updates and functionality updates. You can see your account info and subscription expiration in the user account area of the app.
The tablet itself is high-quality, runs a flavor of Android and the screen is very nice. Tablet functions like loading the app and scrolling through screens were very responsive. The tablet supports connecting to 5Ghz Wifi. GearWrench has a few standard tablet apps on the home screen, like a calculator and a screen recording function so you can save video of your live data. It has a camera, which can be accessed with the standard Android Camera app. Recharging is done via USB-C.
My test connection to my 2025 Subaru Forester went fine, it was able to poll the subsystem topology, and from there I could go into more detailed diagnostic information or grab live data. I was impressed with all the things it found on my Subaru to get data on, even the EyeSight (navigation helper) system. About the only hiccup was it would only let me set vehicle years up to 2022, but after choosing 2022 it appeared to work fine. It even found an air conditioning fault code I didn’t know I had.
The built-in kickstand for the tablet was really helpful for setting the tablet on the dash, where I could tap away or view live data while stationary.
You can download a 30-page user guide on the tablet, but I can’t find that guide yet on GearWrench support, which I’d like to read over offline. Another thing not apparent from the site is how much a renewal of updates will cost after three years. The next device lower on the tier has lifetime updates, and it would have been nice for this high-end one to have the same.
Overall a great OBD2 advanced diagnostics device.
