In all fairness, I have only just started this course. I consider myself a language nerd, I have studied well over dozen languages. I ordered and studied Remembering the Kana by J Heisig before ordering this book (I also highly recommend Heisig’s books) I am impressed that the Japan Times Publishing app is open, free and works seamlessly with the study text of Genki, it helps take the guess work out of the pronunciation of the exercises. Although I usually study a language in conjunction with my Pimsleur conversation app, I think this book/audio app will keep me busy and satisfied for the start of my journey into Japanese.

Its full of information and I’m learning a lot from this, but this book feels more suited to be taught with a teacher than self study.
For this book to work for self study you would need a strong will to setup a kanji practice paper and setup a practice review schedule.
Basically you would have to do a teacher’s job without a teacher’s insight, while also studying the material, but the content itself is great.
Short version, a tutor’s help would go a long way.

One of the best textbooks to learn Japanese from. It is also used in actual Japanese schools and classes from what I’ve been told. I highly recommend it but I feel you should learn your hiragana, katakana and basic kanji first before getting into it. Highly recommend it.

I’m in chapter 4 and enjoying it so far. The fact that there is an American main character in the book is really cool—she and I are apparently both from the same state, too!
One of the teachers from iTalki recommended this book to me and she mentioned that many students wimp out (my words) starting in chapter 3 because the book stops using romanji. However, this was not a problem for me at all, because I had previously spent 2 months practicing Hiragana and Katakana (recognizing, writing, pronouncing), as well as learning a few Kanji through the website WaniKani. Plus, I don’t think I like romanji very much (personal preference), so I was actually thankful when the romanji finally disappeared in Chapter 3.
I like the audio samples, and I like to repeat after the speakers and imitate them. (I downloaded it on my phone, as part of the book purchase.) I’m not part of a class or anything; just self-studying for now.
