I was interested in these drums mainly because of their construction. They have about a quarter-inch white fiberglass shell inside each drum, with wood or veneer covering that. I thought that might make the drums project more than solid wood drums, but in a few unscientific tests using a decibel meter, I found no difference.

The finish on the wood was odd. It seemed marred or runny in some places, as though it was painted on. Maybe that was just a flaw in the veneer or the wood. You couldn’t notice it from a foot away or farther.

You could smell the fiberglass up close, but that too was undetectable a foot or more away.

The handsome brown hide skins are very thin on both drums, perhaps a tiny bit thinner on the macho (the smaller drum). I thought the macho sounded good, but the hembra could have used a thicker skin.

Oddly, the bolts connecting the two drums were loose when the drums arrived. After I tightened them, I found that the rims were touching over the bridge. It didn’t seem to cause a problem, though. But having the drums so close together didn’t seem to make moving back and forth between them easier, either.

I would describe the sound of these bongos as good and conventional. Not outstanding, not terrible.

The pair weighed 11 pounds. In comparison, my Moperc maple bongos weigh 11.5 pounds and my LP Matadors with artificial skins weigh 7.5 pounds. I didn’t find them uncomfortable to hold in the conventional way for long periods.

NOTES RE PICTURES: Left image shows touching rims. Middle shows flaws in “wood” exterior. Right shows fiberglass shell. It is the same thickness throughout; the image is off-center and so misleadingly makes some parts look thinner and others thicker.

I wrote this review because I couldn’t find a single word about these drums online. I’m happy to answer any questions here from anyone considering these drums.
