The camera comes with big stickers saying you need to update the camera before you can use it. I visited the Gopro website and downloaded the update zip file. Then I unzipped it and copied it to the SD card I intended to use in camera. When the camera boots up it sees the update folder on the SD card and does the update. You can also update via the Gopro Quik App. We use Android on our phones and the Quik App had bad reviews on the play store, hence the update folder on the SD card method. The Quik App does have a good discount for the first year for new users. Once the camera has finished its update the Gopro menus are simple to navigate and accessing the settings was easy. There are plenty of youtube tutorials for all your usage questions. The video that this camera captures is of such high quality that we decided the best thing to do is just shoot everything in high quality video and grab our still photos from the video. This way we never miss getting a good photo. The Quik app is great for finding the right frame and zooming in on the subject and getting the perfect screen grab. The new batteries are 1900mAh and not compatible with older Gopro cameras. They have extra runtime but I think the extra battery power is being used to generate heat. This camera runs very very hot. Ok, if you’re underwater or snow skiing but any warm environment without lots of air flow and heat is a problem. Maybe this problem will be solved in future firmware updates or maybe it’s a hardware issue. Hence the reduction of one star in the rating. Our camera hasn’t shut down from overheating because we turn it off and let it cool down. The protective cover we ordered would just make it hotter so we don’t use it. Gopro subscription lets you swap out the camera if you have problems so we signed up for that. Overall a great camera but with a few teething problems, hopefully they get resolved sooner than later. When you think about just how amazing this technology is compared to 10 years ago it really is unbelievable what this camera can do.

I LOVE THIS CAM!
My only complaint is having to buy new accessories like batteries, etc. Over all once the update went through (took forever) all was well with the product. You need to make sure the SD card is formatted before you install the update otherwise you’ll be there for a while. Other than that the quality is far improved from my 9 so it’s worth the ticket.

I have GoPro 12 I needed a second one so I bought the 13 unfortunately it’s not sinking very difficult to use batteries not the same. I’m unsatisfied with this product. I’m returning it. Big disappointment. I should’ve read the reviews first.

I’ve played with body cams and Sony actions cams in the past and this is my first GoPro. I was excited to see what the latest model offered. The unit comes with the camera, battery, helmet mount with quick release plate, thumb screw and USB cable. I’ve been told that the battery used by this unit is not compatible with older models so you’ll need to buy new batteries if you need them.
When I first powered the device on, it needed an update before I could use it. I was able to download the Quik app and update it seamlessly on my tablet. I like the fact that GoPro lets you use the app in guest mode and don’t need to register to update the camera as I was not able to do the same with another brand. Once updated the camera was ready to go. Camera offers a lot of options that you can customize from resolution to frame rates as well as other options for compression ratio which is phenomenal for camera this size. Battery life is decent and at 4K60, you can record for around 40 minutes and still have ~50% battery life left. On test videos taken using my scooter, I was impressed by HyperSmooth stabilization that provided smooth footage.
This camera has desirable features for more photo centric person like me. It’s got quilt-in clips as well as ¼ tripod mount. I was able to attach a QR plate to use with my existing mount system which made it super convenient. On the software front, being able to apply log profile to any mode as well as being able to choose between low (60mbps) or high (120mbps) bitrate gives you flexibility to record longer footage or less compressed video is just awesome. And the timecode feature and the ease of using it on multiple cameras using the Quik app makes syncing multiple cameras a cinch.
However, not everything is rosy. When you use higher resolution and high framerate, the unit overheats. If it’s stationary, you’ll get around 40 min at 4K60. I’ve done this test few times and the camera shuts down due to heat and you’ll have to wait for it to cool down a bit before you can record again. In more open environment, say on a scooter traveling at 12mph, it records around 50-55 minutes before it shuts down due to heat. Depending on the weather conditions, your mileage may vary but in my testing in SoCal weather, I wasn’t too impressed with rugged device meant for adventure overheating. Another peeve is that you need to keep the battery cover open to charge, which exposes both the battery and memory card. I don’t know why they can’t have a separate cover for USB port or a weather-sealed one but having to open the cover every time I needed to charge got old. They should include the USB cover or better yet, the magneto cover that I ended up buying as the standard cover on these things.
Overall, this is an excellent camera even with overheating issues. The video footage is awesome thanks to the superb stabilization. I was pleasantly surprised by the built-in mics and with various mounting accessories available, usage scenarios go beyond action camera as this could serve as a web cam as well as interview cam and so forth. I’m just bummed by overheating issues and hopefully, this could be something that can be improved via future firmware. Excellent camera for recording video. Recommended.

Go pro was on 70% battery life and within a hour was already dead. Go Pro got super hot that I had to put it in front of the Air Conditioner. Anyone else have this problem?
Dergham –
Decently better battery life, new lens system. Both worthy upgrades. It may look similar on the outside (and may take the same quality video) but the features the 13 comes with make a worthy upgrade if you are on the fence.

The camera mount is not connecting with the camera and loses its charge in less than an hour. I have tried repeatedly to make the camera respond to it, but to no avail. The camera does not respond to the mount, which connects to the camera via a cable. Additionally, the camera’s image quality is poor, especially in low-light scenes. I paid a lot of money to get high-quality footage, but it has been disappointing with this camera. Therefore, I will return it and purchase a product from another company.
